Latchkey children-- Children who are left home alone for elongated amounts of time.

Caregivers may lose authority potentially because the relationship may become strenuous due to
lack of parental guidance.

Children may be left for elongated times at home by themselves, resort to stealing.

Children often become increasingly independent at a young age.

They may struggle with authority, as they may not have had much parental authority at their houses
due to being home alone often.

Students may struggle with interpersonal interaction or trusting adult figures, due to their parents not
often being around.

Strategies for teaching the learner / Learning environment needed to be successful

Largely making an attempt to understand the students and attempting to help students feel more
comfortable to understand where students come from.

Sponsor a school sport in order for students to have somewhere to go after school, give them a
sense of security.

Watch for students staying on school grounds after school

● How has your perception of diverse learners grown/changed from your perspective as a student?
I thought it was interesting to note that there are definitive signs that kids are latchkey children, such as keys
around their neck or staying after school is over for extended periods of time.

environment for a diverse population of students?
As a future teacher, It will be important for me to notice the signs of latchkey children and maybe sponsor an
afterschool program to children to stay while their parents come for them, so they aren’t at home alone for
extended periods of time.
