NOTES: HUMAN EYE AND THE COLOURFUL WORLD
Human eye is the optical instrument used which enables us to see.
HUMAN EYE :
It acts like a camera, enable us to capture the colourful picture of the
surroundings.
An inverted, real image on light sensitive is formed on the Retina
1. Cataract: The image cannot be seen distinctly because eye lens become
milky and cloudy. This condition is known as cataract, it can cause complete
or partial loss of vision.
This can be corrected by surgical removal of extra growth (cataract surgery).
4. Presbyopia
As we become old, the power of accommodation of the eye usually
decreases; the near point gradually recedes away. This defect is called
Presbyopia, a special kind of Hypermetropia.
Person may suffer from both myopia and hypermetropia.
Angle of Deviation (D): The angle between the incident ray and emergent
ray.
Dispersion of white light by a Glass Prism
Atmospheric Refraction:
Scattering of light:
Scattering of light causes blue colour of the sky and reddening of the
sun at sunrise and sunset.
1. Blue Sky
The blue colour of the sky is caused by the scattering of sunlight of the
molecules of the atmosphere. This scattering, called Rayleigh scattering is
more effective at short wavelengths (the blue end of the visible spectrum).
Therefore the light scattered down to the earth at a large angle with
respect to the direction of the sun’s light is predominantly in the blue end
of the spectrum.
2. Reddening of the sun at sunrise and sunset: During sunrise, the light
rays coming from the Sun have to travel a greater distance in the earth's
atmosphere before reaching our eyes. In this journey, the shorter
wavelengths of lights are scattered out and only longer wavelengths are
able to reach our eyes.
Since blue colour has a shorter wavelength and red colour has a longer
wavelength, the red colour is scattered the least and is able to reach our
eyes after the atmospheric scattering of light. Therefore, the Sun appears
reddish early in the morning.
Concept Insight: The fact that longer wavelengths get less scattered &
hence are able to travel longer distances is very important.
3. The sky appears dark instead of blue to an astronaut: It happens
because there is no atmosphere in the outer space that can scatter the
sunlight. As the sunlight is not scattered, no scattered light reaches the eyes
of the astronauts and the sky appears black to them.
Concept Insight: The prerequisite of the scattering process is the existence
of particles of the size comparable to the wavelength of the light.
