Mrs. Cramer
Composition 1
Self Evaluation
1. Nothing Words.
Throughout Composition 1, I have caught myself using nothing words all the time. Nothing words
were one of my biggest mistakes in final drafts. I would most commonly use words like “a lot” and
“very.” I have learned now that these words serve no purpose and my essays sound better without
them.
2. MLA format
Throughout Composition 1, I have gained a decent understanding of how to properly use MLA
formatting. At the beginning of the year, I would not properly write my name and the assignment in
the top left of the paper. I also learned that the date that should be on an assignment is the date
that the assignment is due.
3. Works Cited
Throughout Composition 1, I have come to learn the importance of the works cited page. I have
learned that the works cited page only includes the sources that were cited in the essay, not every
source that you used during the research process.
4. In-text citations.
Also, in Composition 1, I have gained a well understanding of how to properly use in-text citations.
At the begging of the year, I had no clue how to properly use in-text citations. Today, I have learned
how to use them correctly and efficiently. My grades today in all my classes that require essays
reflect this.
5. Pronoun/Antecedent agreement.
6. Vocabulary
Throughout Composition 1, I have been able to greatly broaden my vocabulary. The SSR multiple
times a week and things like vocabulary worksheets and membean have allowed me to learn many
new vocab words. I can also apply stronger words in my essays now.
7. Capitalizations
Getting my rough draft essays back during Composition 1 has allowed me to notice that I often don’t
capitalize properly. Finding mistakes in my graded rough drafts has allowed me to fix this issue and
help me prevent it from happening in the future.
8. Comma mistakes
Another common mistake I have made so far in Composition 1 is not properly using commas. I find
myself using commas very frequently and I have used them improperly many times. This course has
allowed me to start fixing this issue, and I now understand when a semi colon is better that a
comma.
9. Run-ons
Another big mistake that I have been making during Composition 1 is run-on sentences. I have
commonly put too much information into one sentence during essays. This course has allowed me
to learn new grammar tricks to fix this issue.
Throughout Composition 1, I have gained a great understanding of thesis statements. I now know
that the thesis statement is the backbone of the entire essay and that it should be worded
differently in the concluding paragraph.
