Px4x Software Download Procedure

This document highlights the procedure to be followed when downloading new software
versions to the Px4x relay.
1. When downloading new software to a Px4x relay, the relay automatically reverts to the
factory defaults for settings, PSL and menu text. If there are application specific
settings installed on the relay, make sure to extract all settings and PSL prior to
software download so that they may be re-instated after the new software has been
installed. All the site specific settings may be extracted using the MiCOM S1 software.
2. The download process uses the 25-way D-type connector on the front of the relay.
This port is a shared port and can also be used for monitoring DDB signals within the
relay. In some cases, it is possible that download problems may occur if any of the
monitor bits are currently active. Before download it is therefore prudent to check the
status of the monitor port in the “Test Port Status” cell of the Commission Tests column
of the menu structure. If the displayed 8 bit word is all zeros, the download will
function correctly, but if any bit is a 1 problems can occur. In this case, the mapping of
the monitor port can be changed using the “Monitor Bit X” cells of the same menu
column. As default, the monitor port is set to mimic the 8 programmable LEDs so if any
of these are illuminated there is a chance of problems.
3. Connect a 25-way lead between the parallel port on the PC and the relay 25-pin port.
The lead must be a point-to-point (direct) connection i.e. pin1 to pin 1, etc..
4. Open the Px40 Download and Calibration application and the following window will
appear on screen. Make sure to select Relay 1 as indicated below:

Energy Automation & Information – St. Leonards Avenue – Stafford – ST17 4LX – England

AREVA T&D UK LTD. Registered Office : St. Leonards Avenue – Stafford – ST17 4LX
Registered in England : 4955841
5. Click on the Software button to start the download process, and the following dialogue
box will appear. Make sure to enter the model number (of what the relay will be) and
the serial number correctly with all letters in upper case.

6. Once the correct model and serial number are entered, click on the download button to
send the information to the relay. The relay will appear to reboot as soon as the
download is complete, and the following message will appear on screen. Click on OK
to accept this message.

If you don’t receive the above message, it is likely that you will see the following
message instead. This indicates that something has failed in the communications with
the relay. This could be an incorrect connection, monitor port status (see point 2) or
that the parallel port on the PC is incorrectly set. Make sure that the parallel printer
port (LPT1) is set for standard bi-directional mode in the computer bios and doesn’t
allow for any extended printer command options (sometimes called ECP mode).

7. Assuming the serial/model number download was successful the following dialogue
box will appear. Provided that the software files have been extracted to the correct
locations you will see a selection of relay models types and communication protocols.
Select the appropriate file for you relay model number and click on “Open”.
The software download will now begin and will take approximately 2 minutes. During
the download, the programmable LEDs will illuminate in order and a series of
messages will appear in the LCD screen of the relay. These messages indicate which
part of the software is currently being downloaded to the relay.

If the incorrect communication protocol is selected with respect to the model number,
the relay will immediately display an alarm and switch the relay out of service (Out of
Service LED illuminated). In this case, the software download will need to be repeated
ensuring that the correct protocol is selected.

If one of the necessary files for the download is missing or located in the incorrect
directory on the PC, the following message will be displayed. If this message appears
the software download will need to be repeated ensuring that all files are present and
located in the correct directory on the PC.

On satisfactory completion of the download, the relay will perform a reboot, enter
service with default settings/PSL and the following message will appear on the PC.

8. When the relay has finished rebooting, it is prudent to check that the relay model, serial
and software references located within the System Data column are correct to ensure
the download has been successful. If everything is correct, any site specific settings
should now be re-loaded onto the relay using the MiCOM S1 software. However,
compatibility issues between software versions need to be considered – see the
software history/compatibility section of the technical guide for further information.

9. Finally, any upgrade process should be organised through the After Sales department
in Stafford. It is imperative that all model/serial number changes made are notified to
the After Sales department to ensure that correct records are maintained. This will
help maintain the correct software version in the event of the relay being returned to
Stafford for investigation/repair/modification.
