SUBJECT: O2 Sensor Damage by Silicone Contamination

DESCRIPTION:

This Parts-Service Gram is being issued to make you aware that the O2 sensors on all Fortis emission
compliant engines can be easily damaged from very small amounts of spray lubricants, penetrating
oils, or spray solvents that contain Silicone.

When using any spray solvents or penetrating oils on or near any engine components, make sure to
examine the label on the can and do not use if it contains Silicone or if there are any warnings to not
use on emissions compliant engines.

NOTE! WD40 does not contain Silicone and is considered O2 sensor safe.

RTV sealants that contain Silicone cannot be used unless they are specifically labeled “O2 sensor
safe”.

Use special care when using any spray chemicals or solvents to check for air intake vacuum
leaks and confirm before using that they do not contain Silicone.

If an O2 sensor has been damaged by Silicone, it will not respond with normal rich/lean oscillations
and it will cause poor engine performance and/or set DTC codes. It must be replaced and the source
of the contamination must be removed. The air filter element must also be replaced if it has been
exposed to Silicone contaminants.

Warranty Reimbursement:

This Parts-Service Gram is for information purposes only and will not be considered for warranty
reimbursement if a part fails due to Silicone contamination.

We reserve the right to change the design of our products without incurring an obligation to modify previously manufactured products.
