A REASON TO TRUST

Smiles were garnished with laughter as the newest couple in town – Ben and Sharon danced at the
reception hall on their wedding day, the families of the couple gave the guests a treat they’ll live to
remember as drinks of different sorts flowed into their stomachs and they ate as much as they wanted.
Ben is a man any serious woman would want for a husband, he’s good looking, works in an oil
company in Port Harcourt, has a magnificent building of his own in Abuja and possesses fleets of cars
among many other feats. Indeed he was well to do and worthy of starting a home of his own.

It was the agreement of Sharon and Ben that Sharon who works in a bank will stay in Abuja where
she works until Ben is able to use his influence to work her transfer down to Port Harcourt, So few
days after the wedding, Ben left for Port Harcourt with the promise of flying down to Abuja every
weekend. It was almost unbearable for Sharon whose new experience as a wife has engulfed her heart
so much that she constantly wants to stay close to her darling husband, however for Ben the feeling
was different, he felt so indifferent about the whole matter, this further compounded Sharon’s fear but
the mild feeling of love she has in her heart for Ben was enough to delete any iota of doubt.

Ben remained committed, calls were constantly flowing in and the weekend trips never varied. But the
transfer of Sharon to Port Harcourt didn’t materialise. Sharon became muddy, the plan they had
before the wedding was too solid to fail, so she started considering resignation. She waited for Ben to
arrive at the weekend so she could tell the new plan to him. With so much ecstasy and enthusiasm did
she welcome Ben when he came; when Ben asked what the excitement was about she narrated the
plan, but shockingly Ben disagreed and reassured her that the former plan will soon materialise.

Sharon started loosing trust in her husband and her countenance became repelling, but she always
chose her words carefully not to hurt him. It is in this state of confusion that she came out with
another plan after the thought of the new plan she said to herself “Wow!” Thinking it will be the
breakthrough plan she needed.

It was a Thursday evening in Port Harcourt, Ben’s door bell rang, and “come in” was his response but
to his greatest surprise his wife was the one coming in through the door, Ben thought the person at the
door was Mr. John the gateman. Shocked but excited, he asked his wife why she didn’t tell him he
was coming and also why she left on a working day, “I’m missing you and decided to give you a
surprise”, Sharon replied. Ben wasn’t however displeased, he just felt it was another moment together.
However for Sharon, her plan failed, she has hoped to see the secret lover of Ben who has been
hindering their good plan. She left after the weekend but wasn’t still convinced of her husband’s
loyalty.

On reaching Abuja Sharon met her college day lover at the airport, it was as though the old feelings
were rekindled as they sighted each other, they talked for a while asking about each other as Sharon
invited him to her place. Sharon has planned not to be the looser, she felt since it was most likely Ben
was cheating, she should also follow suite, especially with this old time lover. So she began looking
forward to seeing Craig.

It was a Tuesday evening; the day Craig promised to show up, Sharon was in her most welcoming
dress, when the car came in, she was so sure it was him, Craig was also well dressed. They shared
their stories one with the other, Sharon first, hoping Craig will feel her pains and dance to her tunes.
So Craig also started his story as he sipped his drink, Craig’s wife Cynthia is no more with him, she
had constantly accused Craig of having an affair with his secretary, complaining of how loose the
secretary always seems around Craig, and Craig has been assuring her that nothing like that is
happening, until a fateful day when Cynthia walked into the secretary’s house to warn her, it grew
into an argument and to a fight, Cynthia hit the secretary’s head against a sharp edge, the lady
collapsed and died. The case was taken to court, she was charged for murder and on the final hearing
she was given a life imprisonment sentence. When Sharon heard Craig’s story, she hid her intention
quickly. That was all she needed to think straight!
