5.2.6. Examination

5.2.6.1. Surface Preparation

The surface to be tested with liquid penetrant test shall be free from any paint, organic coatings, oil,
grease, carbon based residual, corrosion, oxide layer, slag and other impurities (corrosion products,
chemical residuals, dust.) Since some surface finish application such as phosphating, oxidization,
anodizing, chromizing may affect the effectiveness of the penetrant application, penetrant testing shall
be applied before surface finishing.

in general, satisfactory results may be obtained when the surface of the part is in the as-welded,
asrolled, as-cast, or as-forged condition. in case of surface condition is not proper for penetrant
testing, appropriate cleaning methods should be chosen to satisfy the sufficient conditions for
penetrant testing. The surface may be made suitable for penetrant testing in such ways cleaning
with solvent, degreasing with solvent vapor, alkaline cleaning, detergent cleaning, etching,
vapor cleaning, peeling ... Chemical used for surface cleaning shall be met the requirements given in
clause 5.2.2.

The commonly used chemical agents as cleaning methods may affect adversely the effectiveness of
the fluorescent liquid penetrant. in case of using this chemical agents, prior to use of fluorescent
penetrant they shall be completely removed from the surface.

The test surface may be brought in compliance with the code requirements by mechanical cleaning
such as grinding and sand blasting. However, the mechanically cleaned surface may cover the defects
which are open to the surface, and the probability of the detection during examination may decrease
dramatically. That's why, it is essentially required that these test surface shall be etched prior to liquid
penetrant testing. The sand blasting is not permitted as surface cleaning method.

Prior to each liquid penetrant examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at
least 1 in. (25 mm) shafl be free from any impurity.

5.2.6.2. Drying

After cleaning, drying of the surfaces to be examined shall be accomplished by normal evaporation or
with forced hot or cold air. A minimum period of time shall be established to ensure that the cleaning
solution has evaporated prior to application of the penetrant. Drying prior to development must be
accomplished by allowing a minimum of 5 minutes for normal evaporation. The developer must be applied
after drying (5 minutes) and not more than 10 minutes following the penetrant removal operation. The
penetrant dwell time must be a minimum of 10 minutes. Final interpretation will be made after allowing a
development time of at least 10 minutes and not more than 30 minutes.

5.2.6.3. Appllcation of the Penetrant

The penetrant may be applied by any suitable means, such as dipping, brushing, or spraying. lf the
penetrant is applied by spraying using compressed-air-type apparatus, filters shall be placed on the
upstream side near the air inlet to preclude contamination of the penetrant by oil, water, dirt, or
sediment that may have collected in the lines.

a) Fluoresc:ent Penetrant

it shall be performed in a darkened area. Examiners shall be in a darkened area for at least 5 min prior to
performing examinations to enable their eyes to adapt to dark viewing. Glasses or lenses worn by
examiners shall not be photosensitive. Black lights shall achieve a minimum of 1000 µW/cm2 on the
surface of the part being examined throughout the examination. Reflectors and filters should be
checked and, if necessary, cleaned prior to use. Cracked or broken filters shall be replaced
immediately. The black light intensity shall be measured with a black light meter prior to use, whenever
the light's power source is interrupted or changed, and at the completion of the examination or series
of examinations.

b) Color Contrast Penetrants

With a color contrast penetrant, the developer forms a reasonably uniform white coating. Surface
discontinuities are indicated by bleed-out of the penetrant which is normally a deep red color that
stains the developer. lndicatlons with a light pink color may indlcate excessive cleaning. lnadequate
cleaning may leave an excessive background making interpretation difficult. A minimum light intensity
of 1000 lx is required on the surface to be examined to ensure adequate sensitivity during the
examination and evaluation of indications.

5.2.6.4. Dwell Time

Penetration (dwell) time ıs critical. The minimum penetration time shall be as required in Table .02 or
as quallfied by demonstration for specific applicatlons.

5.2.6.5. Excess Penetrant Removal

After the specified penetratlon (dwell) time has elapsed, any penetrant remaining on the surface shall
be removed, taking care to minimize removal of penetrant from dlscontinuities.

After the Dwell Time has elapsed, it shall be proceed to the excess penetrant removal within 3-5 mln.

Water Washable Penetrants; Excess water washable penetrant shall be removed with a water spray.
The water pressure shall not exceed 50 psi (350 kPa), and the water temperature shall not exceed
43 °C.

Solvent Removable Penetrants; Excess solvent removable penetrants shall be removed by wiping
With a cloth or absorbent paper, repeating the operation until most traces of penetrant have been
removed. The remaining traces shall be removed by lightly wiplng the surface with cloth or absorbent
paper moistened with solvent. To minimize removal of penetrant from discontinuities, care shall be
takan to avoid the use of excess solvent. Flushing the surface with solvent, following the application of
the penetrant and prior to developing, is prohibited.

5.2.6.6. Drying After Excess Penetrant Removal

For the water washable technique, the surfaces may be dried by blotting with clean materials or by
using circulating air, provided the temperature ofthe surface is not raised above 52 ° C. For the solvent
removable technique, the surfaces may be dried by normal evaporation, blotting, wiping, or forced air.

5.2.6.7. Developing

The developer shall be applied as soon as possible after penetrant removal; the time interval shall not
exceed that established in the procedure. lnsufficient coating thickness may not draw the penetrant
out of discontinuities; conversely, excessive coating thickness may mask indications.
With color contrast penetrants, only a wet developer shall be used. With fluorescent penetrants, a wet
or dry developer may be used.

Tablo.03: Developer Forms and Applications

Developer Form Application
Dry Developer -soft brush, hand
-powder bulb, powder gun
Non-aqueous Developer -Spraying, brushing
-Aerosol Spray cans

Developing time for final interpretation begins immediately after the application ofa dry developer or
as soon as a wet developer coating is dry.

a) Dry Developer;

Dry developer shall be applied only to a dry surface by a soft brush, hand powder bulb, powder gun, or
other means, provided the powder is dusted evenly over the entire surface being examined.

b) · Non-aqueous developer;

Non-aqueous developers shall be applied by spraying, except where safety or restricted access
preclude it. Under such conditions, developer may be applied by brushing. For water-washable
penetrants, the developer shall be applied to a dry surface. For solvent removable penetrants, the
developer may be applied as soon as practical after excess penetrant

5.2.6.8. lnterpretation

Final interpretation shall be made not less than 1 O min nor more than 60 min. lf bleed-out does not
alter the examination results, longer periods are permitted. lf the surface to be examined is large
enough to preclude complete examination within the prescribed or established time, the examination
shaU be performed in increments.

5.2.6.9. Post-Examination Cleaning

When post-examination cleaning is required by the procedure, it should be conducted as soon as

practical after Evaluation and Documentation using a process that does not adversely affect the part.

5.2. PROCEDURE
5.2.1. Surface Preparation

in general, radiography may be performed in the as welded condition.

However, if surface conditions such as ripples or other irregularities on the inside and outside of the
welds interfere with the radiographic image, they shall be removed by a suitable mechanical process
to such a degree that the resultant radiographic image don't mask or be confused with the relevant
discontinuities.
Material types radiographed by this procedure may be Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel in all shapes.

Thickness range for the procedure is 2, 5 - 40 mm. Source-to-object distance range for this procedure
shall be 100 - 2500 mm. From the source side of the object to film distance shall be between 2,5 - 89
mm.

5.2.2. Equipment

X-Ray and Gamma-Ray (lr-192) equipment may be used provided that the required radiographic
sensitivity has been obtained. Whenever lr-192 utilized for radiography, maximum source size shall
not exceed 3 x3 mm. Sources less than this size may be used without prior approval. For X-ray
radiography, maximum kV used shall not exceed 300.

For material thickness between 2 mm and 8mm x-ray radiographic test method will be preferred.

5.2.3. Film
ASTM Class 1 (or Class il films may be used for heavy wall application tike WT40 mm) as recorded in
following table conforming ASME Sec. V SE-1815 (E-1815) shall be used.

5.2.4. lntensifying Screens

Lead fail intensifying screens shall be used unless it is restricted by radiographic technique.
Fluorescent screen are not permitted to use in this procedure applications.

Thickness of the lead intensifying screens shall be as follows:

Front: O, 13 mm, Back: 0,25 mm

Surfaces of intensifying screens shall be clean and free of scratches, crimps, dents or other defects or
foreign material that may interfere with the intensification process or be projected as a radiographic
image on the film.

Pre packed films containing thinner lead intensifying screens or cassettes prepared by pre-packed film
screens may be used.

5.2.5. lmage Quality lndicators (IQI) (Table-1 and Table-2)

To show the radiographic technique employed satisfies the required sensitivity, image quality
indicators, either hole or wire type, shall be used. The radiographic quality level shall be evaluated by
the image of a properly located penetrameter on the specimen and essential hole or wire clearly
visible along the interested area.

Unless otherwise defineci in applicable codes, the quality level shall not be less than 2% of the thinner
side of the base material.

When the type of penetrameter is not specified in the contract, ASTM E747 wire type penetrameter
shall be used in accordance with the requirements of TABLE-1 and TABLE-2 of this procedure (ASME
Section-V Table-T276). Thickness ranges and the ASTM IQI Set should be as recorded below and in
Table-1:

For material thicknesses < 9.5 mm, ASTM E 747 Set A

For material thicknesses > 9.5 mm and 50.8 mm, ASTM E 747 Set B

The thickness, on which the penetrameter is based, for welds, is the nominal single wall thickness plus
the reinforcement permitted by the referencing Code Section.

Backing rings or strips are not to be considered as part of the weld reinforcement thickness in
penetrameter selection.

5.2.6. Number of IQls

When one or more film holders are used for an exposure, at least one penetrameter image shall
appear on each radiograph except as outlined in {b) below.

a) Multiple Penetrameters: lf the requirements of 5.2.8 are met by using more than one
penetrameter, one shall be representative of the lightest area of interest and the other the darkest
area of interest; the intervening densities on the radiograph shall be considered as having acceptable
density.

b) For cylindrical components where the source is placed on the axis of the component for a
single exposure, at least three penetrameters, spaced approximately 120 deg. Apart, are required
under the following conditions:

• When the complete circumference is radiographed using one or more radiograph,

• When section or sections of circumference, where the length between the ends of the
outermost sections span 240 deg or more, is radiographed using one or more film
holders.

For other cases not stated in this procedure for number of penetrameters shall be as
described in ASME-V Article-2 T277.2.

5.2.7. Placement of IQls

a) Source side IQls: The penetrameter(s) shall be placed on the source side of the part being

examined, except for the condition described in (b).

b) Film Side IQls: Where inaccessibility prevents hand placing the penetrameter(s) on the

source side, the penetrameter(s) shall be placed on the film side in contact with the part being
examined. A lead letter "F" shall be placed adjacent to the penetrameter(s).

c) The penetrameter(s) shall be placed on the weld so that the length of the wires is

perpendicular to the length of the weld. The identification numbers and, when used, the lead letter

"F," shall not be in the area of interest, except when geometric configuration makes it impractical.

Remote from the junction with the circumferential weld being radiographed.

d) For other cases not stated in this procedure for placement of penetrameters shall be as

described in ASME-V Article-2 T277.1

Ug = geometric unsharpness

F = source size.mm: the maximum projected dimension of the radiating source (or focal spot) in the
plane perpendicular to the distance O from the weld or object being radiographed

D = distance, mm: from source of radiation to weld or object being radiographed

d = distance, mm: from the source side of weld or object being radiographed to the film

NOTE: O and d must be in the same units of measure; the units of Ug will be in the same units as F*

Verification of Source Size (radiographic isotopes) - The equipment manufacturer's or supplier's

publications such as technical manuals, decay curves, or written statements documenting the actual or
maximum source size or focal spot shall be accepted as source size verification.

Direction of Radiation - The direction of central beam of radiation should be centered on the area of

interest whenever practical. For weldments, direct the central beam of radiation perpendicularly
toward the center of the effective area of the film or to a plane tangent to the center of the film
except for double-wall exposure/double-wall viewing elliptical-projection techniques.

5.2.10. Back-Scattering

To check back-scattered radiation, an exposure with a lead symbol "B" with minimum dimensions of
1/2" (13.0 mm) in height and 1/16" (1.5 mm) in thickness shall be attached to the back of each film
holder.

lf a light image of the "B" appears on a darker background of the radiograph, protection from back
scatter is insufficient and the radiograph shall be considered unacceptable. Additional back scatter
protection shall be added and the exposure reshot.

A darker image of the "B" on a lighter background is not cause for rejection unless the dark image
could mask or be confused with rejectable defects.

5.2.11. Location Markers

Location markers (ASME V, Article 2, Figure T-275) which are to appear as radiographic images on
the film, shall be placed on the part not on the exposure holder (film) /cassette. Their locations shall be
marked on the surface of the part being radiographed or on a map, in a manner permitting the area of
interest on a radiograph to be accurately located on the part. Evidence shall also be provided on the
radiograph that the required coverage of the region being examined has been obtained.

5.2.13. Quality of Radiographs and Processing

The radiographic technique shall be such that sufficient sensitivity is achieved to show the
identification, location markers, penetrameter designated wire or a set of wire as essential indicators of
radiographic image quality. Ali radiographs shall be free from mechanical, chemical, or other artifacts
to the extent that they cannot mask or be confused with the image of any discontinuity in the area of
interest of the object being radiographed. Such artifacts include, but are not limited to:

- Fogging

- Processing Defects (such as streaks, water marks, or chemical stains)

- Scratches, Finger Marks, Crimps, Dirtiness, Static Marks, Smudges, or Tears

The procedure for processing film shall be performed in manual tanks or in an automatic film
processor.

5.2.14. Viewing Room

Viewing facilities shall provide subdued background lighting of an intensity that will not cause
troublesome reflections, shadows, or glare on the radiograph. The environment of a film reading area
shall be clean and pleasant. The radiographer must be aware of the various factors, which may
influence the evaluation of the radiographic film. Some of these factors are; density of the film, artifacts
on films as a result of handling and processing, level of illumination for film viewing, response of
human eye to variations of light intensity and the acuity of vision.

5.2.15. Viewer

Film viewer used to evaluate the films shall have the following characteristics:

a) it shall provide a variable controlled intensity light source that allows the selection of the
optimum illumination to read radiographs having densities up to 4 H & D

b) it shall have a cooling system to protect radiographs from heat damage proceeding from the
illuminating instrument. Film emulsions shall not be damaged minimum 1 minute of continuous contact
with the viewing surface.

c) it shall include apertures for evaluation of reduced areas.

5.2.7.2. Acceptance Criteria according to the ASME Section VIII Div I & II (for filter and expansion

tank cat-D full penetration weld)

Mandatory Appendix 12 Para 12.4 (Div I) and Part 7.5.4.2 (Div II) shall be considered

Cracks, lack of fusion, or incomplete penetration are unacceptable regardless of length.

Other imperfections are unacceptable if the indication exceeds the reference level and their length
exceeds the following:

(a) 1/4 in. (6 mm) for t up to 3/4 In. (19 mm)

(b) 1/3t for t from 3/4 in. (19 mm) to 21/4 in. (57 mm)
(c) 3/4 In. (19 mm) for t over 21/4 in. (57 mm)

where t is the thickness of the weld being examined. If the weld joins two members having different
thicknesses at the weld, t is the thinner of these two thicknesses.

5.2.7.5. Acceptance Criteria according to the API 1104

API 1104 Para 9.6.2 shalt be considered.

► Indications shall be considered defects should any of the following conditions exist:

a) indications determined to be cracks,

b) individual indications with a vertical height (through•wall) dimension determined to be

greater than one quarter of the wait thickness,

c) multiple indications at the same circumferential location with a summed vertical height
(through•wall) dimension exceeding one quarter the wall thickness.

► LS indications (other than cracks) interpreted to be open to the ID or OD surface shall be

considered defects should any of the following conditions exist:

a) the aggregate length of LS indications in any continuous 12 in. (300 mm) length of weld
exceeds 1 in. (25 mm),

b) the aggregate length of LS Indications exceeds 8 % of the weld length.

► LB indications (other than cracks) interpreted to be subsurface within the weld and not ID or
OD surface connected shall be considered defects should any of the following conditions exist:

a) the aggregate length of LB indications in any continuous 12 in. (300 mm) length of weld
exceeds 2 in. (50 mm),

b) the aggregate length of LB indications exceeds 8 % of the weld length.
