Rationale

“For most Filipinos, anything foreign is good. That’s what our colonizers taught us.

They suppressed our sense of national pride and inculcated in us that foreign products

are better. We gave up being in awe of foreigners” (Abuel, 2019, parg. 6). Truly, our

colonial mentality is a huge part of determining our preferences in life as Filipinos. This

trait of ours is shackled to our very own culture because of foreign colonization. It definitely

affects us one way or another through the choices that we make which includes clothes,

foods, shoes, and even movies.

Local movies, are films that are created and produced in the country where it is

made. In the Philippines, these films are the movies which often flops. In contrast with

foreign movies, which were made and produced outside of the country. They are the

movies which we Filipinos enjoy the most and seemingly gets emotionally attached to the

movie itself, just like the recently highest grossing film in the Philippines which is the

“Avengers: Endgame.” Due to this, the highlight of local movies is being kept away by us

Filipinos, ourselves.

This research aims to know why the Filipino people prefer foreign films over our

local films. Also, this research is significant because the local film, industry is slowly dying.

Thus, the local directors or filmmakers may direct or make their film based on the results

of this research. More research is needed on the topic because the local film industry is

still slowly dying, which shows that something is still wrong with it and the research also

aims to find the areas in which it is still lacking.
