1. INTRODUCTION
It is proposed to construct Multi-Storeyed Building with Double

Basement at Plot No. GH-7 in Indirapuram Extension, Ghaziabad.

GI Tech Engineers & Consultants, Aligarh are approached to carry-out

the soil investigation work at the site of the proposed building.

This report contains the details of field investigations, laboratory

tests and the recommendations based upon them. The various results

have been presented under two heads, i.e.

(i) The field tests and

(ii) The laboratory tests

The field test include:

(a) Boring at the proposed site for the purpose of obtaining soil

samples from every stratum encountered by the boring tools.

Depending upon the type of soil, both disturbed and undisturbed

samples are collected. They are needed for various tests to be

conducted in the laboratory.

(b) Standard penetration tests are meant for measuring the

penetration resistance of the soil, which is a measure of its bearing

capacity in-situ. This test is particularly suited to non-cohesive soils

which are difficult and expensive to be sampled in the undisturbed

state.

The laboratory tests include:

(a) Bulk density of the soil at foundation level and above for the

estimation of overburden correction in the overburden penetration

resistance of the soil and for bearing capacity computation from

shear failure consideration.

4.r4
2

(b) Mechanical analysis of the soil for the purpose of soil classification

and preparation of borelog chart of the boreholes.

(c) Atterberg limits: i.e. the liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity

index of finegrained clayey soils. They give an idea about the soil

consistency, i.e. the degree of firmness of a soil to bear external

loads imposed on it.

(d) Shear strength parameters: i.e. the soil cohesion and its angle of

internal friction. These are needed for the estimation of bearing

capacity (B.C.) from shear consideration.

2. TERMINOLOGY
Some of the very frequently used terms in the report are defined

in the following as per IS:6403-1981, "Code of Practice for

Determination of Bearing Capacity of shallow Foundations".

Net Load Intensity : The net loading intensity on the foundation

is the gross intensity of loading minus the weight of displaced

soil above the foundation base.

Safe Net Bearing Capacity : Maximum intensity of loading that

the foundation will safely carry without the risk of shear failure of

soil irrespective of any settlement that may occur.

Safe Bearing Pressure : The intensity of loading that will cause a

permissible settlement or specified settlement of the structure.

Allowable Bearing Capacity : The net intensity of loading which

the foundation will carry without undergoing settlement in excess

of the permissible value for the structure under consideration

but not exceeding net safe bearing capacity.

3. FIELD TESTS
The purpose of various field tests required during sub-surface
explorations for the foundation of a structure has already been
discussed, a brief discussion of these tests is given below :

3.1 BORING AND SAMPLING

Boring at five different points at the site of the proposed Multi-

Storeyed Building with Double Basement at Plot No. GH-7 in

Indirapuram Extension, Ghaziabad was carried out upto a depth of

30.0m below ground level. These points are marked as B.H.1 to 5 on
Fig.1 , which shows the location of the points on the site plan of proposed
structure with respect to existing permanent structures in the area.
Representative soil samples were collected from the borehole at
a vertical interval of 1.5 m or from a depth at which a change in stratum
occured.
Depending upon the type of soil in the borehole, both disturbed
and undistrubed samples were collected.

3.2 STANDARD PENETRATION TEST

The boring was supplemented by standard penetration tests
(S.P.T.) at 1.5m interval upto the depth of boring below G.L. These
tests were conducted in accordance with the procedure laid down in
I.S.: 2131-1981 "Method of Standard Penetration Tests for Soils" and
N-Values (Soil penetration resistance) were obtained by driving a
split spoon sampler 30 cm into the ground after giving 15cm of initial
seating drive at respective intervals or at change of strata.

3.3 WATER TABLE

Water table was found at 24.50m depth below G.L. during

December 2015 i.e. the month of carrying out the field investigations.

6.r4

4. LABORATORY TESTS
To confirm and supplement the information obtained from field
tests about the nature of soil samples collected from various boreholes,
laboratory tests as given below were also conducted:

4.1 BULK DENSITY TEST

Bulk density determinations were carried out on undisturbed soil
samples collected from borehole as per IS : 2720 (Part XXVII) - 1980.

4.2 PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS OF SOIL

This was done as per I.S.: 2720 (Part IV)- 1985 (reaffirmed 2001),
"Methods of Test for Soils - Grain Size Analysiss". Samples collected
from borehole were subjected to the grain size analysis for particle
size distribution and classification of the soil at the site of proposed
site. The tests included the mechanical sieve analysis and hydrometer
analysis for the fine fraction passing through 75 sieve.

4.3 ATTERBERG LIMITS

For fine-grained cohesive soils, the soil consistency was
determined to check their firmness. This was done by determining the
liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index of such soil samples
according to the procedure laid down in IS : 2720 (Part 5) - 1985
(reaffirmed 2001), "Methods of Test for Soils - Determination of Liquid
and Plastic Limit."

4.4 SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS

The shear strength parameters of cohesive soils were determined

by undrained triaxial tests. These were conducted as per I.S. : 2720

(part XII)-1981, "Methods of Test for Soils - Shear Strength Parameters

7.r4 of Soil from Consolidated Undrained Test with Measurement of Pore

5
Water Pressure". These are important from the point of view of checking
the bearing capacity of the soil at proposed site against shear failure
and also for the design of pile foundation where-ever needed.

5. TEST RESULTS
The results of sub-surface explorations at the site of proposed

Multi-Storeyed Building with Double Basement at Plot No. GH-7 in

Indirapuram Extension, Ghaziabad indicate that the soil in the area

is :

B.H.1 : Non plastic silt is found upto 1.5m layer followed by poorly

graded silty sand over the whole depth of boring except at 7.5m and

9.0m layer, it is low plastic silt with 2% clay is found as shown in Table

7.5m and 9.0m layer, it is low plastic silt with 2% clay is found as shown

in Table 1. Kankar upto a maximum size of 1.5", 2", 2" & 3" is found at

9.0m, 16.5m, 22.5m and 24.0m layer respectively.

B.H.5 : Low plastic silt is found upto 1.5m layer followed by poorly

graded silty sand over the whole depth of boring except at 7.5m and

9.0m layer, it is low plastic silt with 2% clay is found as shown in Table

1. Kankar upto a maximum size of 1.5", 1.5", 3" and 0.5" is found at

7.5m, 9.0m, 24.0m and 27.0m layer respectively.

The various results obtained from various field and laboratory

investigations carried out on soil samples collected from the borehole

at the proposed site are discussed below:

5.1 BULK UNIT WEIGHT

The average bulk density of the soil at the proposed site is found

as 'dry' 1.58 t/m3 for soil above W.T. and for soil below W.T. 'sat'

2.0 t/m3.

5.2 PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS

The results of grain size analysis of the soil samples collected

from borehole is tabulated in Table 1. These results are also plotted as

grain - size distribution curves in Fig. 7 to 11 for borehole 1 to 5.

The description of soil strata encountered in the borehole 1 to 5

upto the depth of boring below G.L. is given in Fig. 2 to 6. The I.S.

Symbols for various soils are also shown in these figures. The soil

classification is based on the procedure laid down in IS : 1498 - 1970

(reaffirmed 1997), "Classification and Identification of Soils for General

Engineering Purposes."

9.r4

5.3 ATTERBERG LIMITS

The liquid (L.L.), Plastic Limit (P.L.) and plasticity index (P.I.) for
various fine-grained soil samples collected from various boreholes are
tabulated in Table 1, if applicable.

5.4 SHEAR STRENGTH PARAMETERS

The results of undrained triaxial tests on samples obtained from
proposed site are given in Fig. 2 to 6.

5.5 STANDARD PENETRATION TEST

The results of these tests for the borehole are plotted as
Penetration Resistance (P.R.) Curves for observed penetration
resistance (N-Values) as well as corrected penetration resistance (N'-
Values) in Fig. 2 to 6 for B.H.1 to 5 respectively. The observed values
of 'N' have been corrected for two effects, namely, (i) effect of overburden
pressure, and (ii) effect of dilatancy.

(i) Correction for Overburden

N' = (0.77 log10 20 ) N ........ (1-a)

_
p
Where N = observed value for penetration resistance in

no. of blows per 30cm penetration of sampler.

N' = Value of penetration resistance corrected for

overburden pressure.
_
p = Overburden pressure in Kg/cm2.
(ii) Correction for Dilatancy

Dilatancy correction has been applied for observations below

water table in the case of fine sand, silty sand and silt. When N '
10.r4
8

obtained after overburden correction exceeds 15, it is to be

further corrected as follows :

N" = 15 + 0.5 (N ' - 15) (1-b)

The average of corrected N-value for each borehole has been

determined using the values between the level of the base of the

footing and a depth equal to 2 times the width of foundation. In

computing the average any individual value more than 50%

greater than the average has been neglected, but the values of

all loose seams has been included. This procedure is conforming

to IS : 6403 - 1981.

These results indicate that the soil in the proposed area is in a

loose state upto 2.5m. Below that, it is in a medium state of compactness.

6. COMPUTATION OF BEARING CAPACITY

A properly designed foundation must satisfy the following basic

requirements:

(i) Foundation must be safe against the shear failure of the supporting
soil.
(ii) The settlement of foundation must be within permissible limit.
The bearing capacities have been determined separately to satisfy
both the above mentioned requirements and the smaller of the two
values has been recommended as the allowable bearing capacity.

6.1 BEARING CAPACITY FROM SHEAR CONSIDERATIONS

In shear, a foundation can fail in either of the three different ways
viz.
(i) Local shear failure
11.r4
9

(ii) General shear failure

Dwb = Depth of water table below base of the footing

R'W = 0.5, when water table is at or above the base
of the footing and equals 1.0,
when the W.T. is at depth > B.
Rw = 1.0, R'w = 1.0
For the soil at foundation level i.e. 1.5m below base of basement
floor or 7.5m below G.L, C = 0.15 kg/cm2 and  = 230 and putting the
values of various parameters in Eq.2, the net-safe B.C. 'qns' works out
as 11.50 t/m2.

6.2 BEARING CAPACITY FROM SETTLEMENT CRITERIA

The minimum average value of N'av = 19 for raft foundation. Taking
the permissible settlement Sp = 50mm and B = 6.0m and using curves
given in I.S. 8009-Part-1-1976 "Code of Practice for Calculation of
settlement of Foundations - Shallow Foundation subjected to
Symmetrical Static Vertical Loads qns = 30.0 t/m2 which is more than

'qns' from shear consideration.

TENG'S FORMULA
q ns = 1/F [21.4 N'2 B R'W + 64 (100 + N'2) Df RW] ......(8)

Df = Depth of foundation = 1.5m below base of

basement floor or 7.5m below G.L
N' = Minimum value of N'av = 14
Putting the values of various parameters in Eq.(8),
qns = 30.20 t/m2.

BEARING CAPACITY FROM SETTLEMENT CRITERIA

From settlement consideration, Teng's correlation for a raft with
permissible settlement of 50mm i.e. Eq. (9) below is used.
q ns = 1.75 (N' - 3) R'W x CD ..... (9)
Where CD = Depth correction factor assumed as 1 as back
filling may not be done with proper compaction
R 'w = 1.0
N' = 19
Putting the values of various parameters Eq. (9) gives
qns = 28.0 t/m2.

7. RECOMMENDATIONS
As mentioned in Art. 6, the minimum of the two values i.e. from
shear and settlement considerations is recommended as the net safe
bearing capacity. This works out as (Net Safe Bearing Capacity)
qns = 11.50 t/m2 from Shear consideration (I.S. Code - 6403- 1981) for
Df = 1.5m below base of basement floor or 7.5m below G.L
As the soil is in a dense state, and there is no water, so
liquifaction will not occur. Liquifaction occurs in loose fine sand
during earthquakes.
Further the area should be protected from any submergence or
saturation of foundation as no W.T. correction has been applied to the
results. For this proper drainage be provided in the vicinity of the
proposed site.
This report is based on soil strata encountered during field
investigations, any major departure from what has been given in this

15.r4
report may be referred back to us.
