01-03 Filling out forms properly

I am currently working at Outback Steakhouse in Jackson as a hostess. In order

for me to get an interview with them to even get the job, I had to fill out and submit an
application. Once I got an interview and got hired, I had to go to orientation and fill out
more paperwork. I had to include things like my social security number, address, phone
numbers, etc. This meets the benchmark because all of the information that I filled out
had to be accurate in order for me to be put into Outback’s employee system. Since I
am a senior in high school and going off to college, filling out forms properly will be very
useful when it comes to college applications and my FAFSA.

02-06 Using business or technical terms

A recent example of me using business or technical terms is when I took
Forensics with Mrs. Drumm. Whenever we started a new unit, we had a few vocab
words we had to write down in our notebook for upcoming tests/bellringers. This meets
the benchmark because they were technical terms that I had to have knowledge of in
order to succeed in the class. This will help me in the future because Forensics is the
career I am going into, and since I took a high school class and did the vocabulary, I will
have some insight as to what we are learning and it will make it easier for me.

03-11 Reading materials to gather information

In Senior Transitions with Mrs. Adema, we had to read a book called The Last
Lecture. Along with reading the book, I had to fill out a study guide with questions based
off of the chapters I read. In order to do this, I had to read the questions and search in
the book for the answers. This meets the benchmark because in order to gather the
information on the study guide, I had to read the chapters and pull the answers right out
of the book. This skill will be helpful in the future because when I become a forensic
scientist, I will have to examine dead bodies, read paperwork and gather as much
information as I can as to what happened to the victim and why.

04-19 Using a calculator to solve problems

In Trigonometry with Mr. Klinger, we use calculators every single day that we are
in class. This meets the benchmark because we have been practicing the law of sine
and cosine and we have to use calculators to solve the equations. This will help me in
the future because while I am at work or doing my taxes I will have to use a calculator
for the calculations because it would be too difficult to do it in my head.
05-24 Following safety procedures
During my sophomore year, I took Chemistry with Mr. Harper-Brees. Before we
got started with any unit, we did a safety lab. We would go over the rules that come
before going into the lab station. We discussed lab coats, safety goggles, what happens
if chemicals get on you, what not to do while dealing with chemicals, etc. This meets the
benchmark because after we went over the safety procedures we took a quiz over
them. I followed every safety procedure while dealing with chemicals or flames. This will
help me in the future because I will have to know how to follow rules when it comes to
my safety and others’ safety. For example, if there was a tornado and I had no idea
what to do or how to follow the safety procedures to protect myself, I could get seriously
injured.

06-31 Selecting the best solutions among alternatives

I am currently taking AP Psychology with Ms. Dryer. In her class, we do activities
regarding the unit we are about to start or have already started. During one of the units,
we did an activity where we had to work together to get 11 nails balanced on another
nail that was sticking up out of a wooden block. It took a lot of thinking and teamwork
amongst my group. This meets the benchmark because we had to think of many
different ways that we could balance the nails until we found the way that worked. This
will help me in the future because no matter what my career is, I will have to know how
to solve problems in the best possible way.

07-35 Demonstrating self control where minimum directions are given

I am a hostess at Outback Steakhouse here in Jackson. Before we come into
work, we are assigned a task for the shift and I am “coordinator.” As a coordinator, I am
in charge of where people are seated, when they are seated, how many people we can
accommodate at one time, etc. This meets the benchmark because when managers are
not present, I still do my job the way I would if they were standing at the host stand with
me. This will be helpful in the future because my boss is not going to babysit me and
follow me around while telling me what to do every second of every day. I will have to
know what I am meant to do and get it done without anyone reminding me to do it.
08-38 Understanding the task and creating a work plan
When I am working, there will be days where we get a lot of groups of people for
8 or more that want to come in and eat. As the coordinator, I work with the front of
house manager to assign where the parties will go and who will be serving them. This
meets the benchmark because I am able to look at the number of people and figure out
how we will accommodate them. We plan where they will sit, estimate how long they will
be there and we pick a certain server to take care of them. This will be helpful in the
future because in Forensics you have to think of ways that you will solve the case. You
have to plan your every move. What time of day you will investigate, what ways you will
find DNA, when you will take everything to the lab, etc.

09-44 Observing, considering, and describing better ways to get a job done
In Mrs. Rush’s life management class, we got into small groups and had to find a
way to put a gummy worm through a lifesaver using only paper clips. In my group, we
had to find a way to successfully do this without using our hands. It took some time to
figure out the right way to do it, but we worked as a team and shared our ideas and
managed to put the gummy worm through the lifesaver by stretching the lifesaver with
two paper clips and using the third one to push the gummy worm through it. This meets
the benchmark because we had to share our ideas with each other, try different things
and consider the best way to get it done. This will be helpful in the future because as a
forensic scientist, you have to observe the crime scene and think of all the ways you
could identify the criminal.

10-51 Determining personal strengths and weaknesses

In Senior Trans with Mrs. Adema, we have done some self-evaluation
worksheets. We get a paper that we evaluate ourselves with, and we determine what
we are good at doing and what we need more work on. This meets the benchmark
because I am able to determine where I am struggling and where I am doing well. This
will be helpful in the future because I will need to know what parts of my job I do well in
and which parts I need more practice with.

11-56 Giving feedback in a positive way

All throughout high school we have written essays, and normally we have our
peers make corrections to it before we turn it in for the teacher to grade. In Senior
Trans, we wrote our college essays and we had two of our classmates read through
them and write what they think we should change. This meets the benchmark because I
had to kindly address my opinions on what I think my classmates needed to change or
tweak for their essays. This will be helpful in the future because there will always be a
need for some change in work in my career and I will have to express my opinions in
the most positive way.

12-64 Seeking understanding of people with different backgrounds than your own
I am currently taking Spanish 3 with Mrs. Carroll. While we are learning about
their traditions and the things they eat, I have to understand that they are different and
they eat and do different things. This meets the benchmark because I am able to
understand that not every person is the same and that they celebrate different things
and they do it in different ways. This will be helpful in the future because I am sure I will
have teammates of other backgrounds than my own and I will be able to work with them
without judgement.

13-69 Completing approved service hours

In order to graduate, we have to have at least 5 hours of community service. We
have a paper that we fill out after we are done with the work and we have the
representative sign it. This meets the benchmark because in order to get the paper filled
out you have to do the service hours, there is no way to fake it. This will be helpful in the
future because I will naturally want to help the community more.

14-75 Helping the team to develop and meet needs in the future
When I played basketball for Fraser High School, we had to work together to get
better at what we did and how we played in order to beat the other teams. This meets
the benchmark because as a team we had to talk about what we needed to improve on
and who needed to be where on the court in order for us to succeed. This will be helpful
in the future because the forensics team will have to work together and help each other
in order to solve crimes.

15-77 Using a team approach to problem solving

When I played basketball for Fraser High School, there would be times when I
was doubled teamed and unable to pass the ball. This meets the benchmark because
even though I was double teamed, we were able to talk with facial expressions or hand
movements and my teammates helped me get passed it. This will be helpful in the
future because as a Forensics Team, you will have to work together or there will be
conflict about something when all focus should be directed towards the case.

16-79 Understanding a team decision and working to carry out the goal
When I am at work, there are times when I am working in takeaway. Which
means I deal with food and make sure that everything is done the way it should be for
the customers. This meets the benchmark because the cooks, managers and I have to
work together to ensure a memorable experience for our guests. We have to
communicate and get the things we need in a friendly, team manner. This will be helpful
in the future because in college or in my career, I will have to work with people to carry
out our goal.

17-84 Understanding creative expression as a reflection of the human condition

I am a huge music lover. 90% of my day is spent listening to music. Music is the
most creative way to express how someone is feeling. My favorite song to sing is
‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis. This song meets the benchmark because she is
expressing her love while using beats and catchy tunes. This will be helpful in the future
because everyone is different, and they express themselves in different ways. I will be
able to understand that not everyone expresses their emotions the same way that I do.
