CODE : J2006

COURSE : THERMODYAMICS 1

TOPIC : TWO STAGE AIR

COMPRESSOR
EXPERIMENT 2: TWO STAGE COMPRESSION

1.0 Objectives

i. To investigate the compressor output power.

ii. To relation between pressure aType equation here.nd temperature.

iii. To investigate the compressor isothermal power and isothermal efficiency.

2.0 Theory

Indicated Power,

W= P1v1

Where;

n = 1.2

P1 = 1.013 bar

V1= air compressor flow

P2 = compress pressure

The indicated power equation can be use for stage 1 and stage 2, the pressure point will not to
change depends on the stage.

Total work Input to Compressor = Indicated Power at stage 1 + Indicated Power at stage 2
Isothermal Power = mRT1 1n

Where;

M = mass flow rate (kg/s)

R = 287

T1 = suction temperature (K= )

P1 = 1.013 bar

P2 = compress pressure

Isothermal Efficiency,

Isothermal Efficiency = Isothermal x 100%

3.0 Equipments / Tools

4.0 Safety and Health

i. Always make sure that water supply is connects before the experiment start.

ii. Set the spring scale to zero before experiment start.

iii. Do not try to change the setting of the meter.

iv. Ensure that the electrical console is dry at all times to prevent electrical shock.
5.0 Experiment Procedures

i. Connect plug to 1 phase 240 AV power supply.

ii. Switch ON the main switch on the control panel.

iii. Take down all the meters initial reading before experiment.

iv. Push the ON button on the control panel and ensure that the run key lamp is light.

v. Record down the power, pressure, differential pressure and temperature each 30 seconds
time interval.

vi. The data continuous mark down until the pressure is automatically cut off. The pressure
will automatically cut off at 10 bar, meanwhile the receiver tank is almost fully occupied.

vii. Release air in the receiver tank before next experiment.

viii. Plot graphs of the pressure against temperature and efficiency of compressor against
pressure.
