This is not due to anything other than the change in the feeding of the
horse that man has caused. In nature, horses travel long distances
throughout the day and night looking for food, eating few quantities,
mainly grass and small bushes, and selecting the most immature and easy
to digest forage. However, man has completely changed this mechanism
of nature. Now the horses are stabled in stables or paddocks instead of
living in freedom and can not eat anything more than what is offered and
at a lower frequency. In addition, if they are used for sport (either
competition or recreation), a workload is added that requires more than
just fodder to provide enough energy. To cover these extra needs,
compound feeds based on cereals and vegetab le fats are generally used
(an issue that we will see in subsequent posts below).
A diet that is too energy tic, in large quantities, scarce in long fiber and
with a very limited disposition to the day (only 1 or 2 times), are key
factors for the appearance of digestive problems and disorders, such as
colic, ulcers or laminitis Therefore, I think that in order to avoid them, it
is essential to first know what the equine digestive tract is like and how
it works.
Intestine caudal or distal (hindgut): formed by: the large intestine, which
in turn make up the blind, small colon, large colon and rectum.
