XIII Latin American

Workshop and Symposium on

“An environmental, social, and energetic

innovation alternative”

October 21 to 24, 2018

Medellín, Colombia
PRESENTATION
On behalf of the Organizing Committee we
welcome you to the XIII Latin American Workshop
and Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion (DAAL XIII),
which will be carried out in Medellín, Colombia,
from October 21st to 24th, 2018. This event is the
13th version of a series of Latin American symposia
of anaerobic digestion which have taken place in
different countries and which are supported by the

eternal spring, Medellín 2018

International Water Association - IWA and by its
group of specialists in anaerobic digestion.

Welcome to the city of

In this occasion, the organization of the event is

Anaerobic digestion has been worldwide conceive

as a sustainable technology and with a large
development, which has allowed the treatment,
recovering, and valuation of wastes and residual
waters, including from the transformation of
recalcitrant pollutants to the use of energy. In
Colombia, anaerobic digestion has been
fundamental for the development of the country
because it has given the basis for a basic sanitation
in rural zones and has marked the guidelines for the
treatment of domestic and industrial residual
waters, and currently the management and proper
disposal the sludge.

Medellín city has been an example of progress and

equity in Colombia; in 2013, it was appointed as the
most innovating city in the world, in the framework
of the contest: City of the Year, organized by The
Wall Street Journal and Citigroup. Our city also
won the world prize of urban transformation, Lee
Kuan Yew World City in 2016. Medellín is leader in
Colombia in the field of hydric management
through the sanitation program of Valle de Aburrá
basin, which includes the infrastructure of collection,
transportation, and treatment of wastewater of the ten
municipalities which belong to El Valle de Aburrá,
highlighting WWTR Aguas Claras, one of the most
modern in Latin America and the largest plant of
secondary treatment in Colombia.

In this context, DAAL XIII will be a space for discussion

around environmental, social, and energetic
alternatives in anaerobic digestion in Latin America.
This event will have the participation of international
experts in order to attain a large vision on the
treatment, recovery, and valuation of wastes and
residual waters in a global environment.
