SFAR 88 MAINTENANCE REVIEW PROPOSALS

SFAR 88 MAINTENANCE REVIEW

The following tables give the maintenance response to those items considered for inclusion in the Maintenance Programme as a result of reviews carried out
to satisfy SFAR 88 requirements with regard to Unsafe Conditions.

1. If the design was such that the degradation of the equipment over time could result in the aircraft being one (no) further event(s) away from a potential
unsafe condition existing it was considered that scheduled maintenance would be required to mitigate against a potential unsafe condition developing.

2. If the design could be interfered with during maintenance such that the aircraft was then one (no) further event(s) away from a potential unsafe condition
existing it was considered that unscheduled maintenance would be required to mitigate against a potential unsafe condition developing.

3. Otherwise no maintenance action is required to mitigating a potential unsafe condition developing.

maintenance on fuel pumps must be carried out by approved maintenance It is considered of particular importance that work carried out on the
facilities and to the manufacturers maintenance instructions because of the pumps is performed to the standards detailed in the manufacturers

from maintenance facilities must meet the original specifications of
a new pump.

1.5. Maintenance Practices
Those maintenance practices identified during systems analysis for compliance with SFAR 88 are identified below together with the intended method of
inclusion in the maintenance programme. These items are applicable to all Airbus aircraft types.

1 Dry Running of Fuel Pumps In the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), all procedures that require a fuel pump to be run have a check of
sufficient fuel quantity in the tank carried out before the pump is run and have an instruction to turn off the pump
when it is no longer required.
2 Hot gas leaks In the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), all tasks during which hot air ducts near a fuel tank are disturbed, have a
leak check of the disturbed part and adjacent parts after installation.
3 Electrical cable replacement In the AMM, ensure that electrical cable replacement tasks/Standard Practices state that in line splices are not to be
performed on cables installed inside fuel tanks
4 Electrical bonding In the AMM, ensure that when any bonding is installed in-tank the bonding is installed/checked IAW relevant
bonding task.
5 Metallic Wire Wool In the AMM, in appropriate tasks, ensure that the use of metallic wire wool in fuel tanks is not allowed, approved
cleaning agents specified in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) are to be used.
6 Cable supports In the AMM, ensure that appropriate tasks reflect the need to have cables correctly supported on the clips etc
provided. Include instructions to install clips if missing.
7 Heat shield above the air In the AMM, ensure that a condition/security check of the heat shield above the air conditioning pack and under the
conditioning pack vapour seal is made during pack maintenance tasks to avoid displacement/damage during maintenance.
8 Tank closure after In the AMM, ensure that there is a procedure that ensures that after maintenance has been carried out in an internal
maintenance area of a fuel tank, checks must be carried out on the condition of the adjacent tank equipment prior to the installation
of the access door/panel. This ensures that the maintenance carried out has not compromised the integrity or condition
of the equipment therein. Such checks should include as a minimum:
A check of the cleanliness of the area,
A check of bonding integrity and security,
A check of condition and security of electrical wiring,
A check of condition and security of components,
A check of component and structure sealing integrity
A check of component to structure clearances where applicable.
