Period 1

Were Revolutions Justified?

Throughout time, there have been many countries in the war that faced internal conflict

with their authorities who owned them. Eventually, because of the way the people were being

treated by their rulers, the people decided that it was time for change and time for them to take

action. Some countries who took action was America, Latin America, and Haiti, and as a result,

they all gained freedom and equality.

During the time of the American Revolution, the British were taking advantage of the

American colonists. They were taxing them for things and then started to overprice the taxes.

After a while, the colonists felt that their basic rights were being taken away and wanted to taker

action. The colonists started to revolt, and after many battles, they finally gained their

independence. One downfall is that once they gained their independence, the trade from different

countries decline drastically because their trading partners were allies of Great Britain.

Another time a revolution was justified was during the Haitian Revolution. Some causes

were that the government was only for the rich and slaves had no voice and nearly 500,000

slaves worked on French plantations. The Haitians and slaves took action by capturing white

people and killing them because they had enough of the injustice that they endured over

the years. Eventually they ran out the white people and claimed their independence back.

Although they may have gained independence, the educated took advantage of the

uneducated to create a dictatorship. Adding to the negatives, the general population also

lived in poverty for many years.

The last revolution that was justified was the Latin American revolution. During this

time Napoleon made his brother king and the spanish supported because they didn’t want to

be ruled by the French. Later, Napoleon started his conquest in Spain, and the spanish

started to revolt. The creole priest had killed many spaniards to spark fear into them to stop

the violence. Overall this didn’t work because they spanish gained their independence and

slavery went into a sharp decline afterwards. With the new independence, it was followed by

another betrayal from creole conspirators, leading to an internal war they didn’t need.

In conclusion, revolution can be justified because the people of these countries

needed to gain independence and their rights back. Although during the revolution there

could be some negative effects, the overall goal that is trying to be reached is definitely a

good reason on why some countries should have revolutions.
