Operations
Sony reports revenue through nine business segments. Its largest, accounting for just more than 20% of sales, is Game & Network Services,
primarily hardware, so ware, content, and services for and related to the PlayStation gaming console. Financial Services (insurance and
banking operations in Japan) and Home Entertainment & Sound (primarily televisions) each contribute about 15% of revenue.
Other Sony business segments include Pictures (movies, television programs, and media networks) and Semiconductors -- which each account
for about 10% of sales -- as well as Mobile Communications (mobile phones and tablets), Imaging Products & Solutions (digital and video
cameras and related products), Music (recorded music and music publishing), and Other.
Geographic Reach
Sony has facilities throughout the world, although its primary manufacturing plants are located in Japan. Other plant locations include China,
Malaysia, Thailand, and the US.
Japan is also the company's single largest market by sales (about a third), with the US and Europe accounting for more than 20% each.
Sony's products are marketed worldwide by sales subsidiaries and una iliated distributors, as well as direct online sales.
Financial Performance
A er several years of flat or declining revenue (as a result of foreign exchange rates as well as a slowdown in smartphones), Sony saw a
significant rebound in fiscal 2018. Net income has followed a similar trajectory during that time.
In fiscal 2018 (ended March), Sony reported revenue of 8,544 billion yen, up 12% from the prior year. The results were powered by its Game &
Network Services segment (PlayStation 4 so ware) and Home Entertainment segment (televisions), as well as strong results from Music and
Financial Services. The Mobile Communications segment continued to shrink as smartphone sales fell. Sony saw improvements across all
geographic regions.
The company's 2018 net income exploded, jumping to 491 billion yen from 73 billion yen in fiscal 2017. Sony kept a tight rein on expenses
(selling, general, and administrative expenses only rose 5%) and reduced other operating expenses from 149 billion yen to 4 billion yen.
Cash at the end of fiscal 2018 was 1,586 billion yen, an increase of 626 billion yen from the prior year. Cash from operations contributed 1,255
billion yen to the co ers, while investing activities used 822 billion yen, mainly on payments for investments and advances. Financing activities
added another 246 billion yen due to increases in borrowings and in deposits from customers.
Strategy
In a very competitive electronics environment, Sony has been focused on revitalizing its consumer electronics business, particularly in
televisions. With an emphasis on di erentiation as opposed to volume, the company reduced its production and honed in on higher-end TVs
(such as 4K TVs). As a result, its average selling price has jumped about 15% while costs have been reduced about 30%. Similarly, as mobile
phones replace the need for digital cameras, Sony has emphasized a smaller number of higher-end cameras with interchangeable lenses.
The company considers its PlayStation business as the greatest profit engine. As such, it continues to build out the PlayStation ecosystem with
new so ware titles and network services, on top of major hardware launches such as PS4 Pro (a high-end PlayStation 4) and PS VR (virtual
reality headset). It also wants to strengthen its intellectual property portfolio in music, motion pictures, and other media.
In addition, Sony is looking to capitalize on current and emerging technology trends. It plans to leverage the virtual reality technology used in
its PlayStation product in other areas of the business, namely cameras, filming, and content creation. Other focus areas include artificial
intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Company Background
Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the predecessor of Sony, was established in 946 with about 20 employees. It listed on the
over-the-counter market of the Toyko Stock Exchange (TSE) in 1955 and three years later changed its name to Sony Corporation. The company
also listed on the TSE that year.

Strategic Initiatives
Overview
Sony Corporation (Sony) is a manufacturer of electronic equipment, instruments, and devices. Focus on R&D, operational performance and
leading position in electronics are its strengths, whereas low liquidity, and patent and trademark infringement concerns could be causes for
concern. In the future, its performance could be a ected by foreign currency fluctuations, increasing IT complexity, and foreign exchange
risks. However, positive outlook for the semiconductor industry, smartphone market in Asia-Pacific region, and strategic initiatives are likely
to provide growth opportunities to the company.
Strengths
Operational Performance
Proper cost management is an indication of the company’s high focus on profitability. The operational performance of the company
increased last year. In FY2018, operating margin was 8.5% in comparison with operating margin of 3.7% in FY2017. Its net profit margin
increased from 0.9% in FY2017 to 5.7% in FY2018. The company’s net profit margin was higher than that of its competitor, Foster Electric Co
Ltd, which registered a net profit margin of 2.3% during the same period. The company’s operating cost as a percentage of sales decreased
from 96.3% in FY2017 to 91.4% in FY2018.
Leading Position in Electronics
The company has a strong market position in the electronics industry. Sony’s electronics product portfolio include television sets, projects,
home audio and video, home theatre system, cameras, camcorders, tablets, personal audio, game, smartphones and sports technology, car
and marine entertainment, storage media and batteries, and accessories. It markets products and services in approximately 200 countries
and territories. Product planning, design expertise, the high quality of its products, innovative product introductions and improvements,
price competitiveness, and extensive marketing and service are important factors that contributed to its competitive position. It has
significant market share in image sensors used in cameras and smartphones. Its gaming console PlayStation 4 is most sought a er product in
Europe with market share ranging between 70% and 90%.
Weaknesses
Low Liquidity
Limited liquidity position could put the company at a disadvantage while funding any potential opportunities arising in the market. Sony's
current ratio was 0.9 at the end of FY2018, which was significantly lower than the current ratio of its competitors such as Foster Electric Co Ltd
(2.8) and Funai Electric Co., Ltd (2.5). A lower current ratio than the competitors indicates weaker liquidity position of the company and its
inability in meeting short term obligations than its peers.
Opportunities
Threat
Increasing IT Complexity
The company o ers complex IT solutions to its customers, which makes it prone to various risks arising from IT complexity. For example, in
spite of testing and quality control, the company cannot guarantee the absence of shortcomings in the present versions or advanced
versions of its products. It could face challenges if products contain undetected errors or if services fail to meet customer expectations. The
deployment of products across a wide range of platforms, integration of so ware with third party so ware applications and databases are
some of the major challenges for the company. Sony requires huge investments for the successful implementation of so ware and
integration of various product components. It invests in training the sta and partners involved in the implementation of so ware to ensure
technical product expertise for qualified project managers, which increases its operating expenditure.
Competitive Environment
Sony’s product lines and services compete with those of numerous domestic and international players throughout the world. In Music, the
company faces competition from several small companies and from larger established consumer electronics companies such as Samsung
and Philips. In the digital products business, its competitors include LG Electronics, Panasonic, Sharp Corp. and Toshiba. Competitors for
mobile phones include Motorola, Apple and others. In Japan, the company’s financial services segment faces competition from traditional
banking institutions, regional banks, trust banks, non-bank companies and financial groups providing similar services online, besides
brokerage. In March 2018, the company acquired Avigilon, a leader in advanced video surveillance and analytics. This acquisition would
allow Motorola Solutions to serve its public safety, government and commercial customers better with added advanced video surveillance
and analytics to its portfolio. In September 2017, the company acquired Regaind, a French artificial intelligence startup. This acquisition
helps Apple to add intelligent search to the Photos app on iPhone.

Gou has amassed a personal fortune of about $4.4 billion building consumer electronics on which other
