1st Act: Alfredo dials a number over the telephone booth then talks with that person for at least
about two minutes.

Alfredo: Good Afternoon President! (Offers a handshake with the President)

President: Good Afternoon. Possibly you are Attorney Salazar?

Alfredo: Just call me Alfredo.

President: Ah. Welcome back to the Philippines Alfredo.

Alfredo: Oh, thank you President—

President: Have a seat! Have a seat!

--------------------------- Someone will serve the tea--------------------

President: Pardon me Alfredo (sighs). The letters arrived so late. You should be at Sta. Cruz right
now.

Alfredo: (pauses, then sips his coffee) No, no it is alright. I have long wanted to go to this town.

President: Oh! What about… (Smiles with mischief) Calle Luz? Is there anything about it?

Alfredo: (laughs) Oh President I think this is not a suitable conversation.

President: But Alfredo I can see it in your eyes.

Alfredo: (stirs up his coffee) it’s been 8 years ago since America invaded Philippines and
someone also invaded my heart. It’s been 8 years but the memory still lingers on my mind. 8
years ago I met someone of full beauty and vitality unaware she captured my heart and made
me restless at nights. (Dreamy eyes on) It was love that blossomed in counted days. A love
grasped within my palms; drawn by fates and heavens combined. A love so enticing and bright
yet… (pauses and draws a heavy breath) it wasn’t real.

Alfred: (smiles weakly and reminisce)

SCENE 2
Venue: sala of an old-looking house

Characters: Carmen, Don Julian, and Alfredo’s mother

Acts: Alfredo’s mom will be the one to serve the tea

Don Julian is reading a book

Carmen is scanning through the newspaper

Alfredo’s Mom: (while serving the tea) Its already turning ages for Alfredo’s wedding to come.

Carmen: (stops reading) Papa, and when will the ‘long table’ set?

Don Julian: I don’t know Carmen, your brother is not very specific but I understand Esperanza
wants it to be next month.

Carmen: (sighed impatiently) Why is he not decided? He is over thirty, right? Esperanza must be
tired of waiting.

Don Julian: She does not seem to be in a hurry either.

Alfredo’s Mom: How can a woman be in a hurry when the man does not hurry her?

Carmen interrupts---

Carmen: Papa, do you remember how much in love he was?

Don Julian: In love? With whom?

Carmen: With Esperanza of course. He has not had another love affair that I know of. What I
mean is that… at the beginning he was so enthusiastic—flowers, serenades (giggles lightly),
notes, and things like that.

Don Julian: (brings down the book he is reading) I suppose long-engaged people are like that.
Warm now, cool tomorrow. I think they are oftener cool than warm. The very fact that the
engagement had been prolonged enough argues a certain placidity of temperament, of
affection or either both. The phase you have mentioned is natural enough for a beginning and
besides that, as I see it, it was Alfredo’s last race with escaping youth—a last spurt of hot blood.

Carmen and Alfredo’s Mom: (laughs with the man’s remark)

SCENE 3

Venue: Alfredo’s room and Judge Del Valle’s house

Characters: Alfredo, Don Julian, his mother, Carmen, Doña Adella, Judge Del Valle and Julia
Salas

Act 1: {Alfredo’s room} (Sitting at the edge of his bed reading his books and some of his work
papers)

Alfredo: Hello Papa! (takes down the paper he was holding)

Don Julian: How are you my son? Are you busy?

Alfredo: No Papa! I’m just scanning through some of the documents of my previous cases.

Don Julian: How is it going with you these past few days?

Alfredo: Well… nothing new Papa reading books, writing some music, rehearsing my trials—just
the same old routine. Why did you ask Papa?

Don Julian: Nothing son. Anyway, please make time as we are going to visit the Del Valle’s. I just
want to have a word with Judge Del Valle and I want you to be there (points out Alfredo). Be
presentable.

Alfredo: Alright Papa!

{Alfredo will start grooming himself, and then Don Julian will leave his room to give him some
time to prepare}

Act 2:

Alfredo’s Mom: (knocks on the Del Valle’s door)

Doña Adella: (opens the door) Amiga! It’s nice seeing you again for such a long time (does beso-
beso). Come in! Come in! (immediately directs the visitors to the dining table)

Judge Del Valle: Thank God you chose to visit my homebound in such a perfect time. My wife
along with my sister-in-law prepared one of the best dishes this household could offer.

Don Julian: Amigo your wife never missed to impress my family. It would be a great honor to
taste and experience such warm welcome.

Doña Adella: Amigo, thank you for such kind words (smiles), so shall we eat?

---------------Everyone starts eating except Julia Salas who was not around the vicinity-------------

Carmen: Mmm, the food’s good.

Alfredo: Señorita Adella, would it be too much to ask for the name of the one who assisted you
in making such wonderful dishes?

Doña Adella: Alfredo hijo of course not, well she is…

----------------------- (Doña Adella will soon be cut off due to Julia Salas’ arrival) -----------------------

Doña Adella: Julia! Where have you been?

Julia Salas: I just went to the garden. I’m sorry, Señorita.

Alfredo: Good Evening! Señorita Del Valle (smiles) (turns his head towards Doña Adella).
Possibly, she is the one?

Doña Adella: Oh! (Surprised) I think you’ve been mistakenly introduced. Alfredo hijo, this is Julia
my sister; Julia, this is Alfredo.

Alfredo: Oh, I think I was… my apologies señorita. (embarrassed)

Judge Del Valle: (stands up) Gentlemen, do you want some brandy perhaps?

Don Julian: We sure do.

------------Men will gather to drink, while the ladies will chat about women stuffs-------------------

{While in the middle of the conversation Alfredo decided to look for Julia Salas to properly
introduce himself and to cope up with the humiliation he gotten himself into, a while ago}

Alfredo: (looks upon his watch while tapping his feet)

Julia: (starts descending from the stairs)

Alfredo: (sees Julia) Hello Señorita. I’m so sorry for what happened a while ago. It was so silly of
me.

Julia: That was nothing. Each time I was about to correct you, but I remembered a similar
experience I had once before.

Alfredo: Oh (sighs in relief)

Julia: A man named Manalang—I kept calling him Manalo. After the tenth time or so, the young
man rose from his seat and suddenly said, “Pardon me, but my name is Manalang,
MANALANG!” You know, I never forgave him! (laughs)

Alfredo: (laughs with Julia)

Julia: The best thing to do under the circumstances I have found out (pause) is to pretend not to
hear, and to let the other person find out his mistake without help.

Alfredo: As you did this time, still you looked amused every time I—

Julia: I was thinking of Mr. Manalang

*awkward silence*

Alfredo: So, shall we do it again? I’m Alfredo Salazar.

Julia: I’m Julia Salas. Nice to meet you señorito.

Alfredo: (kisses the hand of Julia Salas)

{After the short chat, Alfredo and Julia Salas goes back to the salas, both will found Don Julian
and Judge Del Valle playing the game, chess. As Alfredo grew tired of being a spectator, Julia
and he decided to go out for a chat on the vine-covered porch}
Alfredo: Do you by any chance sing?

Julia: Well, sort of. It basically depends on my mood but if I do I usually accompany it with my
guitar.

Alfredo: What is your favorite song then?

Julia: I want to write you a song (smiles). I think we should go back already; the elders are
probably done playing the game chess, it is also starting to get dark.

Alfredo: Yes, I think we should (smiles back). Even though we’ve only been together for a short
period time I could already say that you are a fine woman Julia.

Julia: Thank you Mr. Salazar (smiles brightly)

------------------------Alfredo and Julia will walk together to the front door of the house--------------

Don Julian: Bid your farewells already Alfredo.

Alfredo: Good Night Judge Del Valle, Señorita Adella (pauses) Good Night Julia.

Judge Del Valle and Señorita Adella: Good Night too hijo.

Julia: Good Night Mr. Salazar

Sunday

{Don Julian along with his family goes into the Del Valle’s residence. As the men and women
came to the house, Doña Adella immediately offers them a beer which Don Julian enjoyed and
Alfredo did not.

[SALA]

Judge Del Valle: The message of the mass was good. Please be seated amigos. Amigos, would
you like some brandy or would you prefer beer?

Don Julian: Sure amigo. Brandy will do.

Judge Del Valle: How about you Alfredo? (shifts his head to Alfredo)

Alfredo: No thanks sir. I’m heading back to the town. (leaves)

- Soon as Alfredo left the house, Judge Del Valle and Don Julian became the company of one
another-

Judge Del Valle: (pours the glass of Don Julian)

Don Julian: (drinks the brandy) taste good

Judge Del Valle: Sure, it is amigo. Actually I had to travel from California just to buy this rare
kind of brandy.
Don Julian: This type of brandy is quite exceptional. You know what amigo, this great drink like
this (raises the glass of brandy then stirs it mid-air) is quite expensive as buying your own
house. Well anyway, we are planning to go on a vacation. Would you like to come with me and
visit the beauty of Manila?

Judge Del Valle: Sure amigo I would love to come.

Alfredo’s Mom: (barges inside the room) Excuse me amigo. (whispers something to Don Julian)
Don Julian: I’m sorry amigo but we need to head home. Thank you for the brandy and I do
expect the presence of your family on my invitation.

Judge Del Valle: (offers a handshake) My pleasure amigo and of course we will not fail you.

Don Julian: (accepts the hand) Let’s talk some other time.

Judge Del Valle: Take care on your way home amigo.

SCENE 4

VENUE: Park

Characters: Alfredo, Julia Salas and President

Alfredo: (stargazes) The stars are shining bright tonight Julia, just like you (stares at Julia)

Julia: (looks at Alfredo’s eyes) I’m so grateful to be with you Alfredo (smiles).

Alfredo: You’ll always be my señorita (holds Julia’s hand while looking at her lovingly)

Julia: (leans on Alfredo’s shoulder)

rose at hand. The two walks on the street with their hearts leading them the pace}
(While Alfredo was walking to his way home he accidentally bumped into Esperanza}

Esperanza: Oh Alfredo

Alfredo: (a bit startled) Oh Esperanza

Esperanza: How are you? Have you been busy?

Alfredo: (feels uncomfortable) I’m busy, writing music, reading books. I go to Papa in Judge Del
Valle (looks down)

Esperanza: Oh I see. I’ve been coming to the church waiting for you for hours, but you didn’t
come (disappointed)

Alfredo: (wipes the sweat on his forehead then looks away)

Esperanza: What is happening to you my love?

Alfredo: Nothing. I already told you my dear. I’M JUST BUSY.

Esperanza: If you say so. Are you okay? Are we okay?

Alfredo: Yes, we are okay (pats the right shoulder of Esperanza). We are definitely okay. Don’t
you worry, I’ll make it up to you I promise (hugs Esperanza)

Esperanza: (smiles while at Alfredo’s arms) I’m sure you will.

{After how many seconds they both decided to let go of one another}

Alfredo: (holds the hand of Esperanza while saying his goodbye) Take care dear.

Esperanza: I will, my love.

{As Esperanza walks away, Alfredo watches her back with guilt bugging him}

SCENE 5

Venue: Park

Time needed to be taken: Night/ Near Dusk

Characters: Julia and Alfredo

Alfredo: Julia, I hope you are having a great time.

Julia: (smiles) Very much, it looks like home to me.

Alfredo: Where exactly do you live Julia? (holds Julia’s chin while smiling) I would like to see
your home town.
Julia: There is nothing to see—little crooked streets, buni roofs with growing ferns on them,
sometimes squashes.

Alfredo: Nothing… but there is you… (points at Julia)

Julia: Who? Me? But I’m here

Alfredo: I will not go of course, until you are there

Julia: We live in Calle Luz and I think you will find it a little bit dull

Alfredo: Could I find it?

Julia: If you don’t ask for Miss Del Valle (laughs)

Alfredo: (covers his face with his hand) so, I’ll inquire about the prettiest girl in town.

Julia: You will surely lose your way (laughs)

Alfredo: (laughs with her, then offers his hand to Julia) Come with me Julia, let me show you
something (stands up). But wait, I want you to close your eyes.

Alfredo: (covers Julia’s eyes with his hand) Do not peek okay?

{As Alfredo walks Julia to his surprise which is the tower, upon reaching the top most part he
removed his hand then Julia immediately adjusted her eyesight with the view in front of her.
Alfredo opted to stay at Julia’s back}

Alfredo: I hope you are happy Julia.

Julia: Of course Alfredo, this place is so beautiful (stares at the view). How did you know this
place?

Alfredo: Well, my family used to go to this place when I was still young and dreaming to
become a pilot as this is the tallest tower in Manila. I feel like I am closer to the sky and closer
to my dream, but I have realized at this moment, my dream is already in front of me (pauses).
Oh Julia, I have something special for you.

Julia: Really? (voice evident with excitement)

Alfredo: It took me a while to learn and prepare this surprise for you. But since I am determined
to make you happy, I was able to pull through all the hardships.

Julia: Oh, what is it?

--------------------------Alfredo plays “I want to write you a song“ with his guitar----------------------

Julia: Thank you for this Alfredo (smiles). It was definitely a heartfelt song (hugs Alfredo) but
Alfredo I thing this would be the last time that we will see each other.

Alfredo: (voice laced with sadness) Why so sudden?

Julia: I have to go back home, to Calle Luz.

Alfredo: When?

Julia: I received a letter yesterday from my father and mother they want me to spend the holy
week there.

Alfredo: I’m going to say goodbye tomorrow.

Julia: No! You don’t have to.

Alfredo: But I want to!

Doña Adella: (interrupts) Julia! Come on! We have to go home early.

Julia: There is no time Alfredo (walks away)

Alfredo: JULIAAAAAAAA!

SCENE 6

Venue: Street

Characters: Esperanza and Carmen

Esperanza: (busy checking out her garden) Hello Carmen! How are you?

Carmen: Esperanza is you not busy for your approaching wedding? My brother is not busy at
well. I never see you and my brother during the plans for the wedding.

Esperanza: (laughs) Oh Carmen, there is nothing to worry about. I think your brother has many
things to do. But I assure you he is already planning for our wedding.

Carmen: Yesterday, at our vacation with the Del Valle’s. He seems very busy singing and talking
to this Julia Salas… and

Esperanza: Carmen, those were rumors. I trust your brother and I love him.

Carmen: But I am confused Esperanza. At first he was very crazy over you, he gave you his
whole time… give you anything, but now he seems to be tired of—

Esperanza: Carmen, listen. He is just busy I understand but we will be together for the rest of
our lives. Oh! Wait (claps hand) I’m going to get the wedding gowns. Come with me (holds
Carmen’s hand), and help me pick the perfect wedding gown.

Carmen: Sure.

Don Julian: (fixing his coat) You are not going to see that girl again you understand... Alfredo?

Alfredo: Papa?

Don Julian: Forget about that Julia Salas and make time for Esperanza.

Alfredo: Yes Papa (exasperated voice), because she is my fiancée.

Don Julian: Yes Alfredo! Esperanza is your fiancée so you must honor her. What do you think
her family would say if the wedding will be cancelled? You have been engaged to Esperanza for
four years. And think about our family’s reputation Alfredo.

Alfredo: I understand Papa. I love Esperanza. And the wedding will never be cancelled.

Don Julian: Great. Be a good man.

Don Julian: Good Evening son.

Alfredo: Good Evening Papa! Good Evening Mama! (kisses the cheek of his mother)

Alfredo’s Mom: I suppose you are waiting for Esperanza?

Alfredo: Yes, precisely mother.

----Opens the door and leads them the way-----

Alfredo: Good Evening Carmen! (smiles then kisses the cheek of his sister)

Carmen: Good Evening brother! (pats the shoulder of his brother)

President: Good Evening Alfredo!

Alfredo: Good Evening President (offers a handshake)

President: (accepts the handshake then smiles)

----Esperanza’s parents follow next----

Esperanza’s Father: Good Evening son-in-law. (offers a handshake)

Alfredo: Good Evening Sir! (accepts the handshake). Good Evening Ma’am (kisses the hand of
Esperanza’s mother)

Esperanza’s Mom: Esperanza couldn’t wait to see you hijo (smiles)

Alfredo: So is I Ma’am (smiles back)

----Opens the door----

{Alfredo sees Esperanza}

Alfredo: (kisses the hand of Esperanza) Oh dear, you look so beautiful tonight (smiles).

Esperanza: Thank you my love. I’ve been waiting for this moment to come.

Alfredo: (smiles then take the arm of Esperanza to encircle it with his; then open the door)

{While everyone was already seated on place aside from Alfredo and Esperanza who were
standing up talking about the taste of the wine, Julia then arrives late}

Julia: Good Evening everybody! (bows her head to everyone)

{Right when Alfredo’s eyes met Julia’s he immediately excused himself from Esperanza to
formally welcome the new arrival}

Alfredo: Julia, I thought you have already gone home.

Julia: No, my sister asked me to stay until they are ready to go.

Alfredo: Thank you for coming tonight Julia (smiles then bows his head to Julia)

{Due to Esperanza’s curiosity she came near to Julia and Alfredo’s location to overhear their
conversation. While Alfredo was busy she immediately wrapped her arms on Alfredo’s waist
then look at Julia over Alfredo’s shoulder}
Esperanza: Hi! (smiles)

Julia: Hello Señorita! (smiles back)

Esperanza: Love, would you mind doing the introduction? (smiles at Alfredo)

Alfredo: Oh! Darling this is Julia (points out Julia). Julia, this is Esperanza my fiancée.

Julia: Please to meet you señorita (offers her hand)

Esperanza: (takes Julia’s hand) The pleasure is mine. I believe you are a good friend of my
fiancée, I hope to see you in our wedding.

Julia: Uhmmm sure. I’ll definitely be there.

Carmen: 1, 500 invitations were successfully distributed and all of my friends from New York
already notified me their attendance on the wedding.

Don Julian: So, Alfredo, son.

Alfredo: Yes Papa?

Don Julian: Why have you decided to be married here in the Philippines?

Alfredo: You do know that I really love the Philippines Papa. Also… this is where Esperanza and
I’s story started (looks at Esperanza adoringly). Memories and moments we want to be
reminded of.

Esperanza: And I agree to that, my love (stares at Alfredo with much more intensity)

Esperanza’s Mom: Oh, how sweet you too (giggles)

Alfredo’s Mom: You surely will have a happy life together son and Esperanza (smiles at the two)

Esperanza: I hope so Tita. Our story is as ordinary as the others. It’s been 4 years since Alfredo
has proposed and finally 4 years later we are ready to set the ‘long table’.

Alfredo: Yes, our love is genuine. No matter how many years we have waited but what’s meant
to be will always find a way. Right, darling? (smiles at Esperanza)

Don Julian: (stands up) Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. I would like to propose for a toast for
my son and my future daughter-in-law, Esperanza.

EVERYBODY: (ALL RAISE THEIR GLASSES) FOR ALFREDO AND ESPERANZA (CHEERS)!

----After how many minutes----

Julia: Excuse me (stands up then walks out)

Alfredo: (Surprised of what Julia acted, he excused himself to Esperanza) Darling, excuse me.
(follows Julia)

Alfredo: Julia! Please let me talk to you for a second.

Julia: What do you want Mr. Salazar? Do you want me to congratulate you? Well,
congratulations. I should have congratulated you long before but you know what, mere visitors
are slow on getting the news. (starts walking away)

Alfredo: (holds the arm of Julia) Julia please let me explain (voice laced with defeat and despair)

Julia: (snatches her hand away from Alfredo’s) You even told me that I was your dream. Here
(points her exact location), right in front of you. Well I guess you are right I am just a dream,
your dream (points Alfredo). And I will never be a part of your reality!

Alfredo: There is chaos inside me Julia! You don’t know how much I wanted to be with you… to
stay with you… but I can’t… I just can’t… I had decisions to make… a responsibility to take. I’m
even asking myself, “why do I even have to choose?” The mere fact that I already know what
will make me genuinely happy… it was the first time that I saw you.

Julia: (looks at Alfredo unbelievably, then walks away)

SCENE 7

Venue: Restaurant

Date: Day before the wedding

Characters: Alfredo and Esperanza

----while eating----

Esperanza: My friends from the barrio are coming to our wedding tomorrow.

Alfredo: (answers plainly) Oh! That’s great.

Esperanza: Have you seen Calixta with that man, earlier? It was very inappropriate of her,
bringing that man inside our house.

Alfredo: (looks at Esperanza boredly) What about it?

Esperanza: She is not married to that man! (agitated) besides she should have thought of us.
Mama practically brought her up; we didn’t know that she would turn out bad.

Alfredo: You are very positive about her badness.

Esperanza: But do you approve?

Alfredo: Of what? (confused)

Esperanza: Of what she did!

Alfredo: No

Esperanza: Well?

Alfredo: All I say is that it’s not necessarily wicked.

Esperanza: Why shouldn’t it be? You talk like a —immoral man. I did not know your ideas were
like that.

Alfredo: My ideas? The only test I wish to apply is to conduct a test of fairness. Did I hurt
anybody? No? Then I am justified in my conscience. Huh! I am right. Living with a man to whom
she is not married, is that it? It may be wrong, but again it may not.

Esperanza: She has injured us! She was ungrateful!

Alfredo: The problem with you Esperanza is that you are… (closes his fist tightly)

Esperanza: Why are you getting mad? I don’t get you at all. I know these past few days you’ve
been indifferent to me. I am not blind or deaf. Just tell me Alfredo before it’s ever too late. You
don’t need to think of what people will say.

Alfredo: Yes, one tries to be fair but it’s hard. One would like to be fair to one’s self-first. But
that is too easy, one does not dare.

Esperanza: Whatever my shortcomings are, and no doubt they are many in your eyes. I have
never gone out of my way… out of my place… to find a man!

Alfredo: Esperanza—if you suppose I—

Esperanza: If you mean you want to take back your word—if you mean you are tired of—why
don’t you tell me you are tired of me? (burst out into tears then walks away)

SCENE 8

Venue: street

BACKTOREALITY
{Alfredo and President are walking along the street of Calle Luz at night}

President: Finally Alfredo. I think we found Julia’s house.

Alfredo: Precisely President. Let us go.

{Julia was sitting on the front porch of their house}

President: Alfredo is that Julia?

Alfredo: The most beautiful girl in town.

Alfredo: (knocks on the wood to get Julia’s attention) Julia…

Julia: Alfredo! You are in town?

Alfredo: I love it here Julia. Calle Luz is splendid.

Julia: Yes it is. It’s very peaceful here. It hadn’t change at all.

Alfredo: How are you? Where is your husband?

Julia: I’m fine but sad to say I’m not married yet.

Alfredo: (he experimentally held the hand of Julia as if to find the same feeling he once felt
during his youth)

I may have been sailing on two rivers but my heart was taken away by a magnificent lady that
defies the boundaries of what is right and wrong in the battlefield of love. As I walk away,
locking my heart with someone else, I walk away with my heart full of sorrow and regrets. I may
have clung to a fading dream, but I felt no immense sadness. I may have not ended up with
whom I wanted to be with, but I will make sure that the person will be in my heart as I live here
in this unfair world of war and deaths.
