Course work: ENG3177 Environmental Engineering and Hydrology

Lecturers: Dr Devendra Saroj, Dr Belen Marti-Cardona

Submission deadline: 04 December 2018 (4pm, via SurreyLearn)

PART-A: Hydrology Marks: 35%

You are asked to carry out a preliminary estimate of the annual water balance for the University’s
Lake and Terry’s pond, which are connected.

You will need to make some assumptions regarding the input and output terms of the water balance
equation (e.g. on the surface catchment to be considered). Please, bear in mind that there is not a
unique correct answer, but you need to justify all your assumptions in the report.

PART-B: Environmental Engineering Marks: 65%

You are asked to carry out a preliminary design of a water treatment plant that utilises the lake and
pond water (total maximum capacity or volume=10000 m3) to produce drinking water for AY and AZ
buildings and a part of student accommodation in the campus. Propose a treatment process flow
diagram and carry out the preliminary design of various treatment units.

The chlorine dose requirement for an appropriate level of disinfection should be recommended in
the design report. Experimental data for chlorine demand are shown in Table-1. Adopt appropriate
values of surface overflow rate, retention time, filtration rate or any other design parameters.

Limited information about the quality of source water is available at this stage. Therefore, critically
discus the limitations and strengths of your proposed water treatment plant.

Table-1: Results of chlorine demand test

Sample Chlorine dosage Residual chlorine after
(mg/L) 10 min contact (mg/L)
1 0.2 0.14

2 0.4 0.34

3 0.6 0.51

4 0.8 0.49

5 1.0 0.27

6 1.2 0.47

7 1.4 0.67

8 1.6 0.87

Marking Criteria

Criteria Marks

1. PART-A: Reasonable assumption and

justification of each of the water
balance terms. 25%

2. PART-A: Overall coherence and

presentation of the report.
10%

3. PART-B: Preliminary design of each unit

in the water treatment plant are
presented. 40%

4. PART-B: A critical discussion on the

limitations and strengths of the
proposed treatment plant scheme is 25%
presented.

Note: Use simple diagrams to describe the design of units, and show the main steps of calculations. Provide a
brief and critical discussion to justify the treatment processes/units you're proposing. Please do not use more
than 25 A4 pages (Parts A & B) for all the design calculations, diagrams and discussions. You may attach up to 5
additional pages as appendix, if necessary.
