Question 1
What should Cynthia do? What ideals, obligations and effects should she take into
account when making her decisions?

The best thing for Cynthia to do is firstly to be very retrospective. She should think rationally.
No doubt, according to the Libertarianism Theory, each person is free to live as he or she
chooses, without regulation by government or interference from others, so long as they in turn do
not fringe upon the freedom of others. So here, Cynthia can do whatever her heart desires
because this has been her dream job. But on the same note, Utilitarianism Theory says that the
greatest good for the greatest number is the right conduct. She should stick to her ideals of
completing the project. It is a morally important goal which is worth string for. Therefore,
Cynthia should not leave Altrue because the company has placed its trust on her and she would
not only hurt the company but also destroy the trust the team members have on her. She should
be aware that when two or more ideals conflict, she should honor the more important one.

The best possible option for her is to complete the current big project at Altrue and then move
out to Crytex. This may not be possible because Crytex only gave her a couple of days to think it
over. Even though she is only thinking in terms of business, profitability to be more precise, but
it’s the personal values and integrity that should be her main concern. I think she has a moral
obligation to Altrue and her colleagues. Moral obligation in the Kant’s Ethics defines duties or
obligatory actions that we owe to everybody under all circumstances. When two or more moral
obligations conflict, choose the stronger one. Here Cynthia should realize that she has the
obligation to fulfill her promise to Altrue. If she were to leave the company while her project is
half complete, it shows that she lacks moral integrity. Even if it is true that she does not owe
anything to the company but she should at least reconsider the possibility of the project collapse
as it is crucial in deciding the future of Altrue. Cynthia has to be morally principled. She has to
be sincere and honest to Altrue.

What should Cynthia do? Well, she should adopt and adapt the Utilitarian attitude, that is
pursue her self interest in Altrue and show loyalty not only to her company but also to her
colleagues, especially her team members. She should choose the action that produces the greater
good.
Question 2
Would it be unprofessional of Cynthia to drop everything and move to Crytex? Would it
show a lack of integrity? Could moving abruptly to Crytex have negative career
consequences for her?

Yes, it will be unprofessional for Cynthia to drop everything and move to Crytex. A professional
employee is not only good with their working skills, but also have professional ethics in their
occupational field. In this case, she should be aware of the ethics during her working carrier.

Currently, Cynthia is working on big project at Altrue and she is the driving force behind the
project which needs time about 3 mouths and the company has always treated her fairly. If she
moves to Crytex just because she admires Crytex and love the position which Crytex is offering,
then Altrue is going to be in a real jam. It is extremely selfish to harm the collective interest for
personal gain, so she will face the moral issue and it shows that she is unprofessional.
Furthermore, it shows a lack of integrity on her part. Integrity means consistent and
uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values.

If she moves to Crytex just because Crytex will provide her satisfying career and more wages,
she will be letting her entire Altrue project team down. Her workmates probably couldn’t do it
without her, at least not the way it needs to be done . Crytex is Altrue’s big competitor, Its’ like
she is switching sides. Besides, it’s not just a matter of loyalty to the company, but to the people
she works with. Again, it shows she lacks integrity.

Yes, if she drops everything and move to Crytex, it could have negative career consequences for
her. Even though Cynthia has done well at Altrue which means she has an outstanding working
ability, but she is switching sides to her company’s big competitor during the crucial period,
especially as a main driving force and working on the big project of company.

This behavior seriously affects the overall operation and causes serious harm to the company’s
interest. An employee may make mistakes if he or she has no outstanding working ability during
work time, but they can improve their working abilities then have a better work performance
through career training. This scenario can be applied to Cynthia. However, if a employee has
moral issues and he or she does not have a ‘ruler’of ethical principles in their mind to measure
and constrain their behavior, then they might do something that seriously damage the company's
interests, like Cynthia deciding to move to Crytex. The consequences are not only small mistakes,
but are likely to cause bankrupt of this company.

To sum up, if she drops everything and move to Crytex, then it will have negative career
consequences for her because there is no guarantee that Crytex will keep her forever.
Question 3
Is it morally wrong, morally permissible or morally required for Cynthia to take the new
job? Examine Cynthia’s choice from a utilitarian point of view. How would Kant and
Ross look at her situation?

First of all, I believe it is morally permissible for Cynthia to take the new job offered by
David Newhoff at Crytex. But, it not morally right because Cynthia was working on a big project
for Altrue which would take three months to complete. It is morally wrong for Cynthia to
take the new job. This is because she is the key member of the team and if she left, the project
will be ruined. Kant’s ethics says that only when we act from duty that our acti ons
have moral worth. Here, Cynthia is acting out of feeling or self -interest. Therefore,
her actions do not have moral worth. However, if the company itself fires or lays
Cynthia, then it will be morally permissible for Cynthia to take the new job for her own self-
interest.

Secondly, if Altrue loses either indirect or directly due to her departure, she can be regarded as
disloyal or immoral. For now, she can get more benefits or money, but once she leaves to do
other work, then her workmates or boss will recognize her as immoral and disloyal so that her
prospects are very slim.

In philosophy and psychology, people are increasingly recognizing that justice and morality or
solidarity are essential components of an organization.
Question 4

What does loyalty to the company mean and how important is it, morally?

Loyalty to an organization refers to employees who are dedicated to the expansion of their
company and consider being an employee of the organization as in their best interest. Such
employees are trustworthy to the company; possess strong feelings of care, responsibility, and
bonding. They have a strong disposition to form an investment or maybe choose personal
sacrifice for the well-being of the corporate. For example, loyal employees not only always show
their best potential within the organization, but also decide to stay long within the company, and
even don't actively explore for new employment opportunities outside. Showing loyalty is one
amongst the simplest qualities of an honest employee. Loyalty has evolved. It is earned by
leaders and organizations which produce an atmosphere contributing to learning and progress.
Thus, it is attained by employees who actively apply and grow their abilities. Both are stewards
of the resources entrusted to them. Ultimately, this new loyalty is earned once there are mutual
admiration and respect.

As mentioned earlier, loyalty to a company contribute extensively to the productivity of a

business. They are able to produce the worth needed to place your business on the trail to
success. Customers are continuously on the lookout for worth and nothing else. So, when they
find value in what company offer, then customers assure repeat visits. When employees are loyal
to their workplace, they will be more willing to invest in their work, innovating new ideas and
going the extra mile. Loyal employees are a necessity for a business and also backbone of every
company. When an employee is loyalty to a company and stay with the company, the
organization will be able to gain more profits and get strong customer relationship. Furthermore,
for any business large or small loyal employees is most precious resource because they equate to
lower turnover and by retaining existing employees and company also save money a lot. Higher
levels of employee loyalty also ensure that your business strategies are safe within the company.
When an employee leaves the company for a direct competitor, chances are he or she will take
important business techniques with them. So the company will not have to worry preventing
their capital from the competitors when they have loyalty employees.
Eventually, every organization should support and encourage loyalty employees by providing
those rights and necessity. Every organization needs loyal employees to ensure sustainability in
long run. These loyal employees add to the company’s brand, satisfied customers and happy
work place. It is more vital for working employee to produce a good income and they also
responsibility to fulfill company’s vision and mission. Every company must develop and create
loyalty employees ensure continued success and help drive sales of your company’s products and
services forward
Question 5

Under what circumstances do employees owe loyalty to their employers? When, if ever, do
they owe loyalty to their coworkers?

In the workplace, if you want to be a good employee, you not only should have excellent
personal ability, but also loyalty. Therefore, at work, you not only need to be loyal to your
employer, but you must be loyal to your colleagues.

Loyal to employers:

The first thing that is loyal to employers is to comply with all the rules that employers set for the
business. This is the obligation of every employee and the code of conduct when we work. At
work, employees need to keep these rules in mind and cannot violate the rules for personal
reasons. For example, in a construction company, the company has some safety rules for safety
reasons, but an employee does not put on protective gear just for the sake of convenience. Then
he is injured. If the employee needs compensation or if the manpower is insufficient, the delay
will be costly. This is disloyalty to the employer. Therefore, employer loyalty should start with
the most basic rules and regulations.

At work, doing his own job is also a manifestation of loyalty to the employer. At all times,
employees must respect their duties. Employees need to create their own maximum value in their
positions so that the employer's salary is valuable. But many times employees will be lazy during
their working hours and find various excuses. They think that they have no way to get a higher
salary and status, they will be absent from work, and they will spend time during useless work,
which makes it difficult to do their actual job. Such employees can lead to waste of resources of
the company, and can also lead to a bad working atmosphere, making other employees who work
hard feel unfair. This is also disloyalty to employers. Since you have chosen a job, you have to
do it well. This is also a manifestation of loyalty to employers.

As a member of the company, employees need to put the company's interests first, and consider
themselves as part of the company. This is also a manifestation of loyalty to employers.
Employees need to maintain the company's interests, and give priority to the long-term
development of the company at all times. After all, the company's interests are the interests of
the employer, and when the interests of the employer grow, the interests of the employees and
the interests of the individual will be guaranteed. When the employer encounters any difficulties,
the most important thing for the employee is to leave and find another employer. As a loyal
employee, you need to work hard with your employer. Such an employee is what every employer
expects. Of course, such an employee will get more opportunities and benefits.
The loyalty to the employee should not be blindly obeyed by the employer. It should also include
the danger of blaming mistakes and reporting harmful to the company. When an employer is
faced with some commercial choices and if the employer makes the wrong choice, the
employees needs to point out the mistake and urge the employer to make corrections. In the
company's work, if you find some of the colleague's violations, you need to stop and report to the
employer in time. You should not conceal it for your colleagues, because you have no right to
conceal these things, these need employers to decide. As a company employee, we need to help
the company's development, and should pretend to hide some hidden dangers.

Loyalty to coworkers:

The status between colleagues is equal. The loyalty to colleagues is to do their own work, not to
affect the work of colleagues for their own reasons. At work, there is often some group work,
which requires several people to complete together. For the team and colleagues in the group,
your greatest loyalty is to complete their respective tasks and hand over to the superior without
problems.

Keep your colleagues' conversations confidential with you at work. There are a lot of jobs that
are now confidential, such as some design drawings or design. These things may be inadvertently
seen during work, but you need to ensure that these things will not leak out and cause losses to
the company or colleagues, which is the loyalty to colleagues.

It is also unfaithful to choose to ignore the colleague’s violations. When you know that some of
your colleagues' behavior is illegal or wrong, because he is your friend or colleague and does not
report, this is the performance of disloyalty. As a colleague of the same company, it is necessary
to promptly stop and report to the leader for the violation of the colleague, and make up for the
loss caused by his mistake.
