Areas of Circles and

Sectors
Lesson Plan for Geometry B
Prepared by Ms. Lindstrom

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The purpose of this lesson is for students to find the area of a sector (slice/part) of a circle given prior
knowledge of the area of a circle and finding arc length (part of the circumference).

OBJECTIVES

1. Given two of the three: area of a circle, area of a sector, or measure of arc length; students
should be able to set up a proportion and find the third that was not given.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Pencil & paper for notes

2. Smart notebook will be used to guide/present the lesson. Students should be interactive and put
their work up on the smart board throughout appropriate times in class.

VERIFICATION

Steps to check for student understanding

1. Walk around during warm up to gauge student understanding. Once warm up activity is
complete, select students who have a good handle on the material to present their work to the
class.
2. Ask clarifying questions when discussing the new material. IE. do students understand how the
proportion was set up? Clearify area & check for understanding on how the area of a sector is
similarly proportional to the arc length. Each proportion should be PART/WHOLE.
3. Area of sector APB/Area of Circle = measure of arc AB/ 360 degrees.

1
ACTIVITY

Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

Students should start class with a warm up that will be completed individually. Once it is
completed individually students should be given the opportunity to share with their group before
individuals are selected to show their work to the class. (1 person/ 1 problem)

Smart notebook & the smart board will be used the duration of the class to present the material
to the students. The slides are already prepared but should be looked at ahead of time along with the
textbook to gain understanding before class begins. Elissa Pitts, Jen Smith or anyone else in the math
department can clarify questions for you.

In the lesson you should work through 1-2 problems with a class and ask guiding questions to
help students set up the correct proportion before they cross multiply and solve. Once a few examples
have been given students should work on the next problem on their own. (this has the same procedure
as the warm up) a student will ultimately be asked to share their work with the class. Repeat this
process until all example problems are complete.

Once the lesson is complete put up the homework slide and if time students should start
working on their homework at the end of class.

CLASS NORMS

The warm up/work time procedure is a class norm and should be stuck to. It is okay to remind students
of this norm if they get off task. They have been expected of this behavior all year.

Only one person should be allowed to the bathroom/out of class at one time.

This is a respectful open environment where students can feel comfortable to share their ideas about
math.

If you need anything please ask Elissa Pitts, Jen Smith or anyone else in the math department. They
would be glad to help.
