Test Name: Material Waste

Purpose
Explain briefly but precisely what this test will attempt to determine. Explain how the test will yield objective data regarding meeting
at least one of the design goals for your product.

Our product’s purpose is to cut down on shoe waste and create a more convenient way to change your shoes for different
activities. This test will determine if our prototype reduces the amount of shoe waste compared to the competitors.

Pass/Fail Criteria
What are your benchmarks? Determine what would constitute a passing/failing mark or condition for this test. How should the
device respond? How will you know if the event occurs during testing?

Pass – Our prototype is created using less material than the regular shoe.

Fail – Our prototype does not use less material.

Materials
List the tools, parts, and supporting devices that you will need to set up the equipment. Include any visual or audio equipment
necessary to document this procedure.

Initial Conditions
Determine the conditions that must be in place prior to attempting this test. An example would be: The prototype is completed, the
device is installed properly, and power is provided to the unit.

The triple beam balance is calibrated.

Safety Concerns
Identify any potential dangers posed to people or property that could result from testing. Describe precautions that must be taken
in order to ensure the safety of the tester and others and to protect tools, equipment, fixtures, and the surrounding facility from
damage.

Hazards Controls Completed (yes/no)

no hazards

Test Termination
Under what conditions would you have to stop your testing?
The test is over when the data has been collected.

Step by Step procedures

List the step-by-step process describing what needs to be done in order to run this test. Be very specific so that anyone could
perform this test without additional instruction.

1. Measure the mass of the prototype upper

2. Measure the mass of the PF flyer sole
3. Measure the mass of the athletic sole
4. Take the average sole mass
5. Separately measure the mass of both the nike shoe and the adidas shoe and determine the average shoe mass.
6. Compare the mass of the prototype and the regular shoes.
7. Using the data collected for one pair of shoes, predict the amount of waste the prototype cuts down on if the wearer had
19 shoes compared to 19 soles and our prototype.
