Normal Curve... Commented [1]: Nice work Haylee. With the end of the quarter, I'm going to give you a grade based on the In Chapter 7, we learned about normal curves, z scores, empirical rule and how work you completed on your own. I apologize for you not having a contributing partner, and will grade to calculate each. With a normal curve, the curve is bell shaped and the highest point is accordingly. 45/50 over the mean,𝜇. The transition points going upward and downward occur above 𝜇 + 𝜎 and 𝜇-𝜎, the area under the bell curve should be 1. To gather the data for this project, we used Google Forms and only got around 35 responses, we used the simple random sample method, which means we took a small portion of the entire population of Fowler to understand the average height. Using the Pearson’s Index we (skewness coef: 3x(mean-median)/𝜎) and checked for skewness, we got the number 0.7994. In 7-1, we also learned of the Empirical rule, approximately 68% of the data values will lie within 1 standard deviation of the mean on either side. 95% of the data will lie within 2 data values on either side, and 99.7% will lie within 3 standard deviations on either side. In my set of data, the numbers were: 68% between 61.305 and 71.315, 95% between 56.00 and 76.320 and 99.7% between 51.295 and 81.32. Depending on which percentage I needed, there were three different equations I could use. For 68%, it was 𝜇-𝜎and 𝜇+𝜎. For 95%, it was 𝜇-2𝜎 and 𝜇+2𝜎 and finally for 99.7%: 𝜇-3𝜎and 𝜇+3𝜎. Next I needed to calculate the z-score, which tells us the number of standard deviations between the original # and the mean. The formula is z= (x-𝜇)/𝜎, and my result was -0.86114. For this project, I found the five number summary, which is basically just a series of numbers explaining how the numbers lie. For the minimum number it was 57, the max was 77 and the median was 65. The Quartile 1 was 62, while Quartile 3, 69.5. The mean for this series of numbers was 66.31, meaning my height (63), was below that. The histogram does show that the minority of the numbers is within the 75 to 80 inch range, and the majority is within the 65 to 70 range, which correlates with our 5 number summary. Due to the fact I was the only person in this group, I was unable to do certain calculations.
I still don’t have the 3% above and below, but everyone I’ve talked to had no idea on how to do it…
