Teen depression

Teen depression is a medical illness that affects people of a young age.

Depression is like sadness but on a larger and more permanent scale. Depression is

not a simple illness because of the fact that it affects everyone differently. Depression is

very dangerous if not treated because it may cause a person to take their life. There are

treatments and causes for it but none of that matters if it's not recognized. A lot of

people are affected by depression and a lot of them are young.

About 20% of all teens have experienced depression and or are dealing with it all

the time. Only about 30% of depressed teens are being treated for their depression. A

report found that diagnoses of depression are rising fastest among people under age

35. As a result, diagnoses have gone up 47% since 2013 in young people. Additionally

the rate of young people has risen 63% since 2013, 45% for boys and 65% for

girls(center for discovery). These quickly rising rates of diagnosed depression in

younger age groups can have broader implications on future healthcare needs as they

grow into later adulthood.

The causes of depression are numerous. A teens depression could be caused by

problems at home like parents or problems at school. Depression can also be hereditary

and be common in ones family(center for discovery). There are many causes and they

may not be located without assistance from an outside source. Depression is a mood

disorder that may cause a teen to feel down for very extended periods of time. Thus
causing them to feel like they need to die and make the pain stop. Teens can't just

brush it off and feel better.

There are some treatments for depression. The main ones are counseling and

medication. The type of treatment depends on the type of depression a person has.

Counseling may help some people but in more serious cases hospitalization and or

medication are required. If someone with depression doesn't get treated they might be

fine but in serious cases they could kill themselves. The rate at which teens kill

themselves because of depression is every 100 minutes(center for discovery). The

severity of the depression depends on the person. Two people could have the same

cause and one could be way worse than the other.

So what, Depression has many causes, symptoms, and treatments but none of

them will help if no one does anything about it. Sometimes it can be left alone because

it isn't major and not a threat. Other times something needs to be done. Depression isn't

some disease you need to worry about catching but it's good to be aware and know

thats its around. Sometimes all people need is help and not treatment.
