CHECK LIST FOR CONSTRUCTION OF REINFORCED EARTH WALL

Sr. No Description Yes No Remarks
A Drawings:

Check the LS drawings as per consented design cross sections by placing them appropriate to
their height after considering the OGL, Founding Level and proposed FRL.
1
2 Check whether GFC drawings are verified and consented
B Foundation (To be checked prior to Laying of levelling pad)
Check whether the SBC at founding level meets the bearing pressure requirement as
suggested for each of the design cross section appropriate to their location. Ground SBC has
3 to be established/ determined at site.
Check whether any ground improvement is suggested in the design for a given cross section/
location. If so, make sure that it is implemented at site before placing the leveling pad and
4 start the construction.

Note: After excavating ground till the required foundation depth, field tests have to be
conducted to ensure the SBC prior to construction. This can be determined by collecting an
UDS at founding level and determining the C & vales at lab and working out the ultimate
bearing capacity. If UDS is not possible because of hard strata, FDD & NMC can be
determined at FL and C & F vales can be determined on remolded samples compacted to FDD
at NMC in Lab. SBC can be deduced from Ultimate bearing capacity just by dividing it with
FOS of 1.35. If the bearing capacity of soil is not sufficient, suitable ground improvement can
be adopted to achieve required SBC as per IS 6403.

C Facing (To be checked prior to fixing of Bottom panels)

Make sure that all facia units are constructed with specified grade of concrete (M35), proper
5 curing, lifting and staking mechanism adopted at site

Placing of facia panels/ blocks shall be in accordance with LS drawings as approved

by the IE. Longitudinal joints shall be provided as indicated in the LS drawings
6
Check whether, the facia used at site are as per specifications and are in good condition
7 without any damages at the time of erection
Check whether specified batter (inward) is maintained for each layer of the facia units. At no
8 time the facia unit should experience outward batter.
D Fill materials (To be checked prior to placing of first strip of reinforcement)
Check whether, the fill material intended for reinforced and retained zone are stacked Values of Ф to be
9 separately after ensuring their shear parameters mentioned

Check whether, reinforced and retained RE fill material are tested for C & vales from
laboratory direct shear test as specified in BS 8006-1995 procedure and at a frequency of one
set of test for every 3000 cum quantity (which are specified for general subgrade CBR purpose in
MoRTH) and other allied tests specified for any regular embankment purpose shall be tested at a
frequency of one set of tests for every 1500 cum quantity (as that mentioned for embankment
material in section 900 of MORTH).
10
Check whether, percentage fines (-75 microns) are < 10%, Plastic limit < 6% and Coefficient of
11 uniformity > 2 satisfied
Check whether the specified fill is used for construction or if any change is observed, design
12 need to be modified, hence it should be informed to Design Dept
E Reinforcement (To be checked after recipt of material at site)

Check whether, colour code is provide for all reinforcement Geogrids/ Straps by spraying
different colours for different grades of reinforcement immediately after opening the bundle at
both the ends, so that each grade can be identified with unique colour.
14
Check whether, the exact grade, type & length of reinforcement is being used during
15 construction at each of the layer as given in design.
Check whether the reinforcement is connected to the facia as per specification and pulled
16 tight, anchored at other end before placing the fill material.
Check whether, all grades of reinforcing material (Geogrids) & any geo-synthetic material are
17 in good condition before placing them at appropriate levels.

Check whether the reinforcement geogrid strips are placed in specified manner At panel, width
of reinforcement is equal to one strip width and at end it shall be double. Overlap need not be
provided but ensure specified contact area between reinforcement and soil/fill.
18
F Connections (To be checked during execution)
Check whether, the connections are proper (Blocks with friction connection/ panels with
19 positive connection) as per drawings.
G Compaction (To be checked during execution)

Check whether each of the layer is compacted to 97% of its laboratory MDD and ensured by
conducting FDD test (at frequency of one test for every 500 cum of quantity as per MoRTH)
20
Check whether any heavy equipment is brought nearer to the facia (with in 1.5m from facia,
no heavy equipment having weight more than 1.0 ton should be allowed) and only baby roller
21 is used for compaction at this area
H Drainage (To be checked during execution)
Check whether, specified granular layer is placed between facia system and RE fill
22 throughout the wall height along the length.
Check whether, geosynthetic cloth/ geo-textile is placed in between the RE panels (at the
23 openings) to ensure no loss fine grained material (in case)

CHECK LIST FOR CONSTRUCTION OF REINFORCED EARTH WALL
Sr. No Description Yes No Remarks

Check whether, necessary drains are provided laterally at regular intervals for drainage.
24
I Friction Slab Crash-barrier (To be checked during execution)
Check whether friction slab crash barrier is constructed as per approved drawing and
25 specifications with proper coping beam at top most facia unit.

Check whether any gap left between facia/ crash barrier and the paved shoulder is covered
with water tight material (like concrete, membrane), so that no ingress of water is allowed in to
re wall. (This is applicable only when RE wall facia and the carriageway are separated by
sloping embankment/ large gap with earthen shoulder).
