configuration either by:
1. Direct discharge
2. Crane and skip
3. Concrete pump
4. Wheel barrow
5. Chute

 In general the following factors will be considered while placing concrete:

 Deposit the concrete as nearly as practicable to its final position to avoid segregation due to re-
handling.

 Deposit with care to avoid disturbance of formwork, reinforcement and inserts. A maximum free
fall of 2m will be used. If the free fall cannot be limited to 2m the concrete will be placed through
a tremmie pipe/chute.

 Carry out proper surface preparation & use approved jointing grout at the cold joints.
 Concrete in bases will be deposited in regular layers not exceeding 200mm in thickness. The
pouring in layers will commence from one end building up to the required level. The material will
flow to the other end-keeping surface of exposed progressing face to a minimum.

 Vibrators shall penetrate full depth of the layer. When the concrete is placed over previously
placed concrete, which has not initially set, the vibrators shall enter & re-vibrate that layer to
ensure that successive layers are well knitted together.

 Care will be taken to avoid excessive vibration, which may cause segregation, surface laitance
and leakage through disturbed joints of form work.

 Concrete will not be placed in standing or running water.

5.0.9 STRIKING OF FORM WORK

 Removal of form work shall be in accordance with ACI 347R/ equivalent BS standard and project
specifications.

drying winds, rains & running water.
 Immediately after pouring & completion of the surface finishing in any section, the exposed
surfaces shall be covered with polythene sheet. The polythene sheet will be gradually extended
as the finished area increases.

 After initial set of the concrete but not later than 12 hours after completion of concreting the
polythene will be removed. The surface will be sprayed with water; a layer of thoroughly wetted
Hessian cloth will be placed on the top of concrete surface and covered with polythene in close
contact with the Hessian.

 The Hessian will be thoroughly rewetted four times a day (i.e. first in the morning, twice during
the day and last at night) or more as required by the weather condition.

 On vertical surfaces water is fed from top all-around and stopped as soon as it begins to run out
at the bottom (all around).

 Curing of structures can also be done by applying water repellent (to entrap moisture) solution on
concrete surfaces just after striking of formwork.

5.0.11 PROTECTIVE COATINGS
