UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT


Speaking test ini hanya memakan waktu 11-14 menit.
Schedule waktu testnya bisa di hari yang sama dengan jadwal tiga
skills yang lain, bisa juga sehari-dua hari sebelum atau sesudah
listening, reading, and writing test dilakukan.

TYPE OF QUESTION
Part 1 timing What will I need to talk about

1 4-5 mins The examiner will ask you questions about familiar
topic (e.g. hobbies, likes and dislikes, daily routine)

2 3-4 mins The examiner will give you a booklet showing a topic
and some suggestions on it. You need to talk about the
topic for 1 -2 minutes. You have one minute to write
notes before you begin. The examiner may ask you
some follow -up questions.

3 4-5 mins The examiner will ask you more detailed and more
abstract questions lin ked to the topic in part 2.

PART 1
SPEAKING

Di sesi ini, wawancara personal berlangsung selama kurang lebih 4


sampai 5 menit. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang diberikan ialah mengenai
hobi, kebiasaan, yang disukai/tidak disukai, pekerjaan, keluarga,
teman, dan pengalaman-pengalaman kita. Part 1 speaking biasa juga
disebut small talk alias basa basi, namun uency dan koherensi menjadi
faktor penting.

1. Be condent (percaya diri), karena ini adalah tahap awal,


menunjukan semangat dengan expresi senyum dan menjaga eye
contact dapat memberi kesan pertama yang baik bagi examiner dan
juga bisa memaksimalkan kemampuan menjawab kita.

2. Be interested in the questions, (terlihat antusias) sehingga ketika


kita menjawab akan keluar intonasi bicara yang natural, relax dan tidak
terlalu cepat yang tentunya hal ini akan menaikkan score kita.

3. Balance Answer, Satu pertanyaan jangan dijawab terlalu pendek


dan tidak terlalu panjang, sekitar 30-45 detik, 2-3 kalimat sudah cukup.
Walaupun bentuk pertanyaan nya adalah yes, no, tambahkan 2 kalimat
pendukung. Kalimat pendukung bisa berupa alasan atau eksplorasi
jawaban 5W + 1H.

TIPS FOR
PART 2
SPEAKING
Bagian ini sering disebut juga dengan "Long Turn" karena nanti kita
akan berbicara sendiri tanpa diganggu oleh examiner selama kurang
lebih 2 menit, istilahnya monologue/story-telling. Disini Kita akan
diberikan sebuah topik dengan beberapa point yang harus dicover dalam
pembicaraan kita.

Sebelum disuruh berbicara selama 2 menit, akan ada waktu 1 menit


untuk persiapan membuat catatan tentang hal-hal yang ingin
disampaikan. Kadang setelah monologue 2 menit, si examiner akan
memberi pertanyaan-pertanyaan follow-up. Tetapi lebih banyak yang
langsung ke part selanjutnya. Total waktu Part 2 bisa dari 3-4 menit.

In this golden opportunity I'm going to talk about one of my belongings


related to technology....... it's my laptop. (Introduction + what/things)

I bought it when I entered the university 4 years ago... it's funny really...
because I was still learninng how to operate the gadget. It was a high-
spec laptop....the latest operating system at the time. .. to overcome my
difculties, Then I decided to nd help from my friends in order to teach me
how to use email.......send attachments, how to access websites, word
processing and others..... (when/time)

I used it 3 times a day, in the morning, afternoon and night, mostly for
learning and doing my assignments from campus.... sometimes I used it for
downloading podcasts, listening to music and watching videos to
release my stress as well. (how often/frequency)

The reason why I chose my laptop it was simply


because this technology helped me a lot during
my study. If I didn't have it I dare say I'd have to
spend more time at university, being left behind
about technology........and didn't know the rapid
changes of the world. but on the positive side I
suppose I'd read a lot more if I didn't have it..... so,
I think people should have this kind of gadget
whether in their house or in workplace.... to make
everything is going smooth because nowadays we
live in digital era, so all of the information is
provided digitally and have to be accessed
online...(why/reason)

TIPS
1. Cover all the points yang ada dalam cue card (kertas soal), ini
membantu untuk memenuhi waktu bicara dalam 2 menit sesuai
dengan topik yang diminta sampai examiner menghentikan
monologue kita.

2. Mistakes Correction, kadang kita membuat kesalahan grammar,


tenses dan vocabulary yang tidak sesuai, mengoreksinya dapat
menunjukan kepada examiner bahwa kita tahu mana yang benar
sesuai penggunaannya. Tetapi jangan terlalu sering membuat self-
correction karena ini akan mengganggu speaking kita.

3. Make Up Story. Dalam long turn ini, menceritakan pengalaman


pribadi itu bagus, tetapi kalau kita tidak punya, mengarang cerita juga
tidak apa-apa. Yang penting lancar dan tidak keluar topik.

4. Always Practice. Sebelum real test, sering-sering practise sendiri


atau dengan teman, latihannya bisa juga dengan direkam, supaya
timing nya pas. Namanya juga skill, harus diulang-ulang.

PART 3
SPEAKING
Nah ini bagian terakhir, teman-teman dan examiner akan melakukan
percakapan mendalam tentang topic yang kita bicarakan di Part
2, ujungnya lebih kepada diskusi dengan pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang
lumayan rumit dari examiner, hanya saja tingkat kesulitan dari
pertanyaannya yang berbeda. Diskusinya bisa berlangsung dari 4
menit sampai 5 menit setelah itu Speaking test pun berakhir,

EXAMPLE:

Examiner: What kind of technological developments have made the


biggest impact on our lives?

You: in my life time it has to be the internet of course but I also think
wihas made a huge difference to how we interact with the
internet.....wireless networks at home and public wi hotspots
mean we can go online easily.......access our mail....basically be
connected wherever we are.

EXAMPLE

Examiner: what do you think are the important things people need to
learn when they start using computers?

You: well..there are things like how to use internet......how to enter a


web address.....how to navigate websites.....that kind of thing but it's
also important to know how to back up your les in case your
computer crashes... and all about internet security...

Examiner: Do computers/laptops make it much easier to study?

You: Denitely yes...researching information is much easier with the


internet.... you can bookmark webpages for future reference and
writing essays is much easier..... also being able to cut and paste
sections of text means you can experiment with organisation.

TIPS
1. Extend Your Ideas, artinya jangan terburu-buru untuk berhenti
memberi jawaban karena disini examiner butuh jawaban yang panjang.
Sampaikan idenya dengan penjelasan yang banyak tetapi tidak
mengulang ide dan kata yang sudah disampaikan. Hal ini untuk
menguragi repetition.

2. Pay Attention To Tenses, Perhatikan pertanyaan yang


membutuhkan jawaban dengan beragam struktur kalimat dan tenses
(past, present, future) sehingga bisa divariasikan dengan bahasa kita.

3. Make Sure You Always Have The Answers. Apapun dan


bagaimanapun bentuk pertanyaannya, teman-teman harus pastikan
selalu punya jawabannya, jangan sampai ada satu pertanyaan terlewat
tanpa jawaban dari kita. Kalau benar-benar tidak paham, teman-teman
boleh bertanya untuk klarikasi.
4. Keep Your Health and Pray. Terakhir and yang paling penting
adalah jaga kesehatan dan do'a. Kalau kondisi kita physically and
mentally kurang t, akan mempengaruhi performance teman-teman.
So, istirahat yang cukup dan makan makanan yang bergizi sebelum
hari testnya, ditambah do'a yang selalu teriring.
