Sing Sing Together Expression
and Theory
n/a Dalcroze color/rhythm canon -
- T has sts repeat dalcroze color rhythm patterns
(black = ta, purple = titi, white = rest, blue = ta-o,
lemon yellow = tikatika)
- T gives non verbal cue to get sts in a circle and sit
down
- T starts interrupted canon with sts
- T will praise sts doing the hand motions as well as
saying the colors
- T will ask if any st wants to lead the interrupted
canon
- T will lead uninterrupted canon (if students are
successful at interrupted canon) - cueing sts to start
on beat four
- After a few rounds of the uninterrupted canon, T
will write colors on the board and have sts identify
the stick notation syllables that go with each color

- “jingle at the” = have sts pat tika-tika rhythm
on their laps

Rhythmic dictation - Theory
- T pulls up rhythms on the board
- T claps one of the rhythms on the worksheet, and
has sts give a “secret answer” where they hold up
numbers behind their other hand 1-5 depending on
what rhythm they think it is
- Sts then hold up their answer so T can assess.
- T will then have all sts clap and say together
- T continues until all rhythms are completed

Bug composition with Orff instruments - Expression,
Creation,
- T assigns groups of 4 and Theory
- T gives sts packets of paper with names and pictures
of bugs
- only bugs with known rhythm names
- ex. caterpillar, yellow jacket, or praying
mantis for tikatika, fly, bee or ant for ta,
beetle, stink bug, or cricket for titi
- make sure sts know that each bug name is
one beat!
- Have sts compose an 8 beat rhythm pattern using
the bug names
- Then have sts figure out and write out the stick
notation that goes with each bug name
- Have each group perform their bug ‘rap’ with egg
shakers
- If time, each group will perform again as the rest of
the class accompanies them on Orff instruments
with open 5th bordun
