Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

March 13, 2019

I. Describe the Class

This is a kindergarten class of 10 students. There are two ESL students.

II. Subject/Skill:

The subject they are learning is measurement. Measuring with a ruler using inches.

III. Objective(s)

Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to measure objects by successfully using
a ruler to measure 10 objects. Students will have successfully measured at least 6/10
objects provided to them.

IV. Procedures

1. Today we will be learning to measure things or objects using a ruler. We are

going to be using “inches” to measure these objects. An inch is something we use
to measure how long or how wide and object is. (showing the ruler and using
hand motions) When we measure we need to make sure we are using our rulers
the right way. A ruler has a start and end. When we need to make a line do we
start at the beginning or end of the line? Yes, the beginning! We must do the same
with a ruler!
2. Do you guys remember how we measured books with the safety pins last week?
Those pins are an inch long. (Showing plastic pin against ruler that are an inch
long) Today we are going to be doing the same thing with a ruler. We are going to
measure objects and make sure to write down our answers on a piece of paper.
3. Do you guys want to do it! Lets do one together first. What should we measure
together? Students pick an object and teacher will demonstrate how to place the
ruler in order to measure. Teacher will make a note about the placement and then
ask the students to check the number on the ruler while pointing to it. A ruler has
an inch and centimeter side so teacher must make sure to make a clear note on
which one to use. Teacher will do two more objects together before allowing
students to do it on their own.
4. Teacher ask students, “Who wants to do one by themselves?” Teacher allows time
for questions and answers if there are any. Teacher then asks students to point
with their finger the “inch” side of the ruler.
5. Teacher then allows students to each pick an object provided and to grab a piece
of paper and a pencil in order to document their findings. Teacher observes as
students begin on their own and makes him/herself available for any help if
needed.
V. Materials

 Ruler
 Paper
 Pencil/ crayons or markers
 Objects either provided by teacher or from around the room for students to
measure. (Books, a shoe, a phone, plates, napkins, ect.)

VI. Grouping Structures

Students will have the choice to work individually or in groups of two. The total number
of students is 10, this lesson can be conducted in a classroom or even at home if
necessary.

VII. Modifications

2 Students are ESL but they are always very good at verbally expressing what they did
not understand in the lesson. I allow time for questions and before moving forward I
always ask students in between instructions if there is something they do not 100%
understand.

VIII. Assessment

1. By having the students document their finding or their measurements on a piece

of paper, I am able to tell if they truly understood the lesson. By observing them
as they are measuring I can also later correct what they did not do correctly, and I
am able to work on that part of the lesson. By checking their answers and
observing the way they measure I will be able to asses their ability or inability to
complete this objective.
2. Students will have the homework or task of doing the same thing at home. I
would this time send home 5 objects of my choice and send a message in a back
pack to the parents explaining the importance of this skill and how they could
help their children continue increasing at it. I would send a worksheet with a
section for them to document their answers once more and continue to teach them
by developing more lessons on inches and measurement.
