Olivia Carranza’s Lesson Plan

Math Skill: Classification

Age: 3-5

Number of Students: 3

Content Standards: 1.PK.5 Use concrete objects to combine and separate groups
up to 5.

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1. Group colors together

2. Identify shapes and colors

3. Verbally communicate their understanding of shapes decorated

Materials: Laminated shapes of various colors and stickers of different shapes and
colors.

Activity: I began by spreading out the shapes on the table for the children to look
at and then I asked them, “what do you see in front of you?” Of the three children
two answered the colors they favored, and one child answered “shapes.” I
confirmed they were all right that they were shapes of different colors. I then
asked them what shapes they could identify and what color that shape was. I
asked each child to pick a shape and to decorate it with some stickers. I asked
them to stick stickers together that match together. I opened one package of
stickers and let the kids open the other packages on their own because they asked
to do it themselves.
What Happened: All the children were able to understand the instructions and
were able to do the activity.

My 3-year-old Evangelina (Jelly) was able to group according to colors. She

grouped purple stickers on a purple rectangle. She also group stickers together on
one shape she only used stickers shaped like a purse.

My 4-year-old Sofia was able to group 5 purple stars and 5 blue stars on two
shapes she decorated. She also favored the shape of the stickers and their color.
She grouped pink, red, and purple stickers and gave each color a matching pair.

My 5 year old Evelyn created a pattern on her shapes and grouped according to
color and the shapes she decorated.

What Next: Develop a lesson that is about color and shapes. The shapes I made
are laminated and can be reused for painting on or even putting playdough on
them. I planned on creating a lesson around creating shapes to match the
laminated ones with playdough.

I would encourage my students to bring things from home that matched the
shapes they use in class. I would also have my students play a game of Simon says
where they need to touch an object in the room with the color green, yellow, red,
pink, and blue. Also touch objects around the room that are the shape of a
square, circle, and rectangle as a way to have the kids remember and make sure
that they truly understand the concept.
