“Connection Between Mental and Physical Health.

” CMHA Ontario,

ontario.cmha.ca/documents/connection-between-mental-and-physical-health/.

The Canadian Mental Health Association on an online article about how mental and physical

health are directly correlated. They claim that this is relationship is most prevalent in chronic

problems. They claim that a poor mental state can attribute to chronic physical problems or

conditions. This article is simply a report from studies and correlations observed. Since a mental

health association wrote it, there isn’t a personal bias. They wrote this to inform people, and

don’t work for a private business, so they have no opinion on the subject. The CMHA is a

credible association, so the information provided has a sound basis. This information can be used

to create a general basis of my thesis, so I can build up my argument.

Bonnie Graves, author, on a book about how physical health is important, and how it impacts

every aspect of life. The main focus is physical health, with some about teenage life and how

physical well-being crosses into other parts of life. This source really focuses on improving

health, so there is a bias towards being health-positive. There isn’t any bias towards or against

my thesis, though. This isn’t overly credible, but also not uncredible, because it is a published
source. I can use this when I talk about the physical aspect of life specifically. I can also talk a

little about how physical health makes you feel better with this source.

“How Mental Health Affects Physical Health.” Bradley University Online, 19 Dec. 2018,

onlinedegrees.bradley.edu/blog/how-mental-health-affects-physical-health/.

Bradley University on an online article on how mental health affects physical health. The claim

is that the two are very intertwined, and go almost hand in hand. The article talks a lot about the

individual aspects where the two types of health cooperate with one another. This is a college

report from the university itself, so it is very credible. There is also a lot of sources mentioned in

the article, so that backs it up even more. It is a simple report, so there doesn’t appear to be any

biases in the article. I think this will be one of the most used sources for my paper, as it directly

correlates with my thesis, and is lengthy and factual.

World Book on an encyclopedia entry on mental health. There isn’t much of a claim or thesis,

but is rather information on mental health. It talks about research, treatment, rehabilitation, and

other aspects of it. This is from World Book, so it is very credible and informational. This has no

bias, especially because it has no stance whatsoever. This source will cover the mental aspect of
my argument. It will cover one side of my argument very well, before I connect both sides. I

think this will be a helpful source due to the full range of information it covers.

“Physical Health and Mental Health.” Mental Health Foundation, 27 Aug. 2018,

www.mentalhealth.org.uk/a-to-z/p/physical-health-and-mental-health.

The Mental Health Foundation on an online article on the correlations between physical health

and mental health. The claim is that the two are tightly knit, and that they seem to have long

lasting effects on eachother. Both will change depending on the other, and you cannot really

separate the two according to the article. This is an article by a well-respected organization, so it

is quite credible. This is the Mental Health Foundation, so it doesn’t really have any bias towards

the physical health aspect. It might have a slight bias towards promoting a healthy lifestyle, but

would not go out of it’s way to avoid facts. This is a great article for my paper, as it talks directly

about my thesis and how mental and physical health impact each other. I would guess that this

will influence my paper a large amount.

van den Berg, Magdalena M., et al. “Do Physical Activity, Social Cohesion, and

Loneliness Mediate the Association Between Time Spent Visiting Green Space

and Mental Health?” Environment & Behavior, vol. 51, no. 2, Feb. 2019, pp.

144–166. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1177/0013916517738563.

Author Magdalena M. van den Berg on a study on how physical activity and other factors

associate with mental health and clarity. The study tried to find a correlation between physical
activity during leisure time and mental clarity. There wasn’t a strong correlation, but the study

suggested some indirect factors to the two. This was a legitimate study and was produced

officially for a journal, so it is very credible. There wasn’t a bias, they were simply looking for a

correlation but were not fighting for any specific outcome. This study will not help my paper

very much, besides if I use as a counterargument.

Grimm, Kirsten. “Mental Health Plays Major Role in Youth.” The Daily Courier, 26 Apr. 1999,

p. 7,

Author Kirsten Grimm in a newspaper article on depression, specifically in teens, affects people.

The main point was to draw attention to the issue, so there is a lot of information on what causes

depression and what fixes depression. This is a newspaper article by a single person, so it may be

biased. After reading, it seems that there is a slight bias of just trying to get sympathy for mental

illness. This doesn’t affect the facts other than showing more about mental health from an

emotional standpoint. This will help my paper when I talk about the mental aspect of health

before I compare it to physical health. This will round out my arguments.
