1-Write about the method of undetermined coefficients & method of variation of parameters. Discuss & compare
the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Illustrate your findings with examples.
2-Show that for a square matrix the linear dependence of the row vectors implies that of the column vectors and
conversely. Show that for a non square matrix either the row vectors or the column vectors must always be
L.D.
3-Prove that the product of two orthogonal matrices is orthogonal, and so is the inverse of an orthogonal matrix.
What does this mean in terms of rotations?
4-Prove that the product of the two unitary matrices (of the same size) and the inverse of a unitary matrix are
unitary. Give examples. Powers of unitary matrices occurring in applications may sometimes be familiar real
matrices.
5-Prove the following statements and illustrate them with examples of your own choice
(a) If A is a real matrix , its eigen values are real or complex conjugates in pairs.
(b) Inverse of matrix A exists if and only if 0 is not an eigen value of A.
6- State and prove Sylvester's rank inequality for matrices. Also give examples of your choice.
8-Explain positive definite quadratic forms giving examples. Also give an example of quadratic form which is not
positive definite.
9-For a given matrix A, prove that trace of A equals the sum of its eigen values. What will be the eigen values of
A-kI ? Also give examples.
10-Comment on maxima and minima of functions, how this concept is helpful in daily life.
11- Can properties of a function be discovered from its Maclaurin series? Give examples.
12-Explain the Gaussian elimination method and Gauss-Jordan method for the solution of system of linear
equations giving examples.
14-Prove that the eigen values of a hermitian matrix are always real.Give examples.Use the above result to show
that the det(H-3iI) can not be zero,if H is a hermitian matrix and I is the unit matrix.
15-Giving examples explain the symbolical method (use of operator D) of solution of simultaneous first order
ordinary differential equations .
