Math 1030 Voting Project.

Part 1

The Iowa caucuses are the first to be held in the nation and thus are an important metric for
determining how voters feel. The process differs for republicans and democrats. Democrats
stand in designated areas during the caucus and are allowed periods of time where they
informally debate with people in other candidates “areas” and attempt to get them to change
who they support. At a certain point the people are counted and the results are announced. The
republic vote is a lot closer to what a typical vote looks like and has gone through more changes
to combat voting irregularities. Certain delegates are chosen who in turn vote for who the people
vote for. They are bound to do so since 2016. A caucus is different from a standard primary
election in that it is internal to each party. It isn’t the race for the white house, it's an election for
each party to see who to send on the race for the white house. The winner of each parties
caucus is generally the one who will compete in the primary election. As I said before, Iowa is
especially important as its the first state to hold such a vote and is used as an important metric
in valuing campaigns. If candidates are expected to do well and fail in Iowa, they lose a lot of
media support. Likewise, if a candidate is unknown yet does well in iowa, the media will pick
them up.

I. 100
II. Trump

III. With instant runoff voting we would eliminate Rubio. Then we can see Bush has 25 votes,
Cruz has 36, trump has 39.

IV. Then we eliminate Bush and can see Cruz has 61 votes to Trumps 39.

V. Cruz wins by instant runoff voting.

VI. Borda count for each candidate.

VII. Rubio

VIII
Under The Copeland method, Rubio gets 3, Cruz gets 2, Bush gets 1, Trump gets 0.

IX: Rubio wins under the copeland method.

X. Yes, there is a condorcet winner.

XI. Rubio.

PART 3

I believe the winner of the election would be Marco Rubio. Under the Copeland method Each
candidate gets some time to shine against each other candidate and within that context rubio
won each time. He never lost against any candidate he was paired against making him the
condorcet winner in addition to being the copeland winner. Rubio was also the winner of the
borda count, another form of voting that attempts to pair each candidate fairly. Rubio did lose
the plurality vote and the instant runoff vote but it's clear that those options don’t merely help
choose which candidate the people would prefer and instead choose the candidate that has the
most “energized” base. Rubio won the elections that are considered more fair making him the
better choice of the people.
