know what it will take to restore the proud club to its going to cut it. Instead, some obvious
changes needed to take place.
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, a proud
place as an NRL powerhouse. By MATT ATTARD and courageous club, has fallen on tough times
following major salary cap issues and a complete
overhaul of management and coaching staff.
But fear not, Bulldogs fans, for there is a woman
in power who has a vision for the future, someone
who intricately knows how the Bulldogs work best.
While success may be a few years away, you can
take solace in the fact that Chair Lynne Anderson
and the rest of the club hierarchy are doing
everything in their power to take the Bulldogs back
to where they belong.
“If we build the house right it can sustain
a tornado or whatever it might be,” she says.
“For me, the house that we have at Canterbury
was built on our values, our culture, our proud
history and our commitment to helping our
community. That’s our long-term play.”
Daughter of Peter ‘Bullfrog’ Moore, Anderson
says there are things that can go against any club
that are out of their control.
“The main thing for us is that we’re true to
what we know,” she says. “That’s the essence
of the Bulldogs, it has been for many years.”
The essence Anderson speaks of is the club’s
culture, which famously surrounds being ‘the
family club’. But what exactly does that mean?
“I often think that people laugh when we call
it a family,” she says.
“The best way to explain it is there have been
so many players over the years who play with us
and then go to other clubs, but they all come back
to club events, happy to share in great memories
and friendships forged at the Bulldogs.
“I’ve heard them say that every player should
play one year at Canterbury to know what a good
club is about. That’s the best thing you can have
said about yourself.”

Although Anderson admits there have been

times the Bulldogs haven’t been a good club.
“I point to Melbourne when I use this analogy of
being ‘built right’. Melbourne, when they started,
had the best of both worlds, with key input from
Broncos and Canterbury people, because those
clubs were the benchmark at the time,” she says.
“They went through some really tough times in
their own history, but they bounced back pretty
quickly, didn’t they?”
When Anderson and Co inherited what could
only be described as ‘a mess’ at the end of 2017,
she and the board sat down to sort through the
rubble and organise a plan of attack.
“We had a look at the things that needed
improving. The first thing was the critical issue
– the salary cap,” she explains.
“That took most of our focus last year. But we’re
setting that up by saying to this team that we want to

“I have looked at that and thought ‘you know
what? We have to change a few things with our
football club’ – so we have regular sub-committees
happening and on each one there is a director. It’s
not one person flying off to make the calls.
“We have a great board and I cannot tell you
how wonderful our discussions are. They’re
robust and we don’t always agree, but that’s
the sign of good, mature business isn’t it?”

LATRELL Mitchell lived out a childhood dream
when he snapped a field goal in golden point
to seal a dramatic win over the Storm, adding
another highlight to his already impressive CV.
With Luke Keary off the field due to a head
knock, everyone – including the defence –
assumed star halfback Cooper Cronk would
step up to sink his former side. Instead, the
Roosters faked it and shifted to Mitchell who
nailed the left-foot shot from a tricky angle to
seal the 21-20 result.
It now makes the Tri-colours a triple threat
when lining up for a one-pointer; a scary
proposition for the Dragons this week given the
attacking arsenal at their disposal.
“I kicked one when I was a junior, but that’s the
second game-winner in my life,” Mitchell said.

DESPITE his club’s underwhelming start to the year, new Bulldogs
recruit Corey Harawira-Naera has his eyes set on finals footy.
However, with the Bulldogs sitting at the bottom of the ladder and
desperate for their second win, Harawira-Naera knows time is
running out.
“It’s getting to that stage where we really need to start winning
games. We’ve got a young team but we can’t use that as an excuse now.
We’re six games in and everyone’s starting to run away at the top of the
table, and that’s where we want to be,” Harawira-Naera told Big League.
The former Panther expects Friday’s match against the Cowboys to
be a close one given the visitors have also been underperforming and
will be looking to kick-start their season.
“It’s a big game against the Cowboys. They’re struggling like we

BEHIND a trio of class middle

forwards, prop Daniel Saifiti
says he’s happy to bide his time
while learning from the best.
Saifiti admitted he’d love to win
a starting role, but knows he has
to be patient.
“Timmy Glasby, Jimmy [James]
Gavet and obviously David
Klemmer, they’re three world-class
middles,” Saifiti said.
“I’m younger. I wouldn’t say
I’m learning my craft – I know my
craft now – but I just want to play
consistent footy.
“If I have to stay behind those
three before I’m ... putting my hand
up, it is what it is, but I’m a firm
believer in [the idea that] you pick
yourself. I shouldn’t have to wait
for someone to play badly, I just
have to do my job coming off the
bench and I think things will fall
into place.” – MB

Hopping along to the Easter Show
MATCH-UPS T HE 2019 Easter
Show was great. It
was open during every
state and territory’s
school holiday,
which gave us the
opportunity to mingle
with thousands of
fans from around
the country, and we
had such a fun time
doing so!
People had the
opportunity to
have a photo with
our NRL player
cut-outs, or with the oversized Authentic Rugby League ball
(#NRLEastershow2019). There was an NRL Mascot colouring
competition, with youngsters having the chance to colour in their
favourite team’s mascot with prizes given to the most impressive artists.
On top of this, NRL players and mascots from multiple clubs visited he
NRL activaion, which was exciting for everyone.
People also tested their passing skills with a ‘pass the ball’
competition each day. But the main attraction was the huge glass ‘ball’
with rugby league balls of all shapes and sizes inside. Participants had
the chance to guess how many balls were inside, with an opportunity to
win fantastic prizes for their school or junior club.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by!
