THE ’18 RAM 3500’s 6.7L Cummins diesel engine is now


upgraded to produce 930 lb-ft of torque. The truck’s fifth-wheel
tow rating is also increased to 30,000 pounds, thanks to a hitch
designed by Ram Engineering. The hitch is a $1,395 inclusion in a new

FORD’S PURPOSE-BUILT TRUCKS REACH 100 YEARS OLD


The Model TT arrived in 1917 and was Ford Motor Company’s first purpose-built truck, which utilized the same cab and engine as the Model T
but differed by having a heavy-duty frame to accommodate a 1-ton payload. When new, the Model TT cost $600. It was replaced in 1928 by the
Model AA, with a chassis cab available in two different lengths, a new powertrain, and axle options. The Model BB debuted in 1933, followed by
the Model 50 with a Ford Flathead V-8 engine in 1935. The first of the F-Series trucks came in 1948, followed by the next generation in 1953. Are
you up for some trivia? The F-2 and F-3 F-Series trucks went on to become the F-250, while the F-4 was renamed F-350. Jump ahead to 2017,
as the history of Ford trucks has reached the milestone of 100 years.

of excitement across 77 attributes, ranging from the power they feel

APEAL Study ranks Porsche the highest—13 years in a row—with BMW
and Audi also in the Top 5. Ford received multiple model-level awards,
including citations for the Ford Super Duty.

CLASS 8 TRUCKS are the workhorses of the highway. The
heavy loads of cargo these rigs haul across interstates demand
engines that can provide substantial amounts of reliable torque
and horsepower. However, despite this need for big-time performance,
today’s modern oil-burners can’t produce horsepower and torque only.
They must also meet strict fuel economy and emissions
standards in order to truly be viable—especially in the U.S.
Building a powerplant that is able to meet all the
required contemporary benchmarks is not an
easy task. Many different technologies must
be employed. Detroit Diesel meets these
expectations and surpasses them with
its Detroit DD16, the biggest, cleanest,
and highest-output diesel in the com-

come as no surprise that the heart of
these systems—the high-pressure
injection pump—hits a point where
it’s time for either a rebuild or
replacement. The Bosch CP3, used
on the ’01-to-’10 Duramax and ’03-to-
present Cummins engines, is known
to last 250,000 miles or more before
needing to be replaced. Of course,
performance enthusiasts also know
these pumps are only capable of

even longer on stock engines, but
shoddy modifications combined with
neglect left ours in a bad way. Knowing
the pump is in need of a rebuild at the
very least, we packed it up and headed
to Industrial Injection’s headquarters in
Salt Lake City, Utah.

overflow valve, low-pressure inlet, and
metering unit. Removing this part of the
CP3 gives access to the pump shaft and

common problem, and one that shouldn’t be ignored for too long.

That’s because the pump gets its lubrication via a direct feed
from the engine. If the sha seal fails, the result is an instant high-
pressure oil leak.
That was the biggest concern when “Diesel Bob” Marinos, a
Cummins service technician with more than 30 years of experi-
ence, discovered his early-production ’98 Dodge Ram 3500

pump on the 12-valve 5.9L engine technically isn’t too tall a task,
but still, it does take a lile know-how to get the job done quickly.

in an awkward, tight location, and it’s hard to see in that space,

GEAR SWAP FOR BIG TIRES


QUESTION: I’m geing ready to have a 6-inch li and 37-inch tires
put on my ’12 Ford F-350. It’s my daily driver and tow rig that pulls a
14,000-pound toy hauler. What do you recommend is the best axle ratio? It
currently has 285/65R18 BFGoodrich T/A KO2 tires and 3.55 gears with rear
limited slip. It will have 37x12 50R18 Nio Ridge Grapplers. I want to use
Yukon Gear and Axle HP 4.30 gears, as I’ve heard good things about them.
Before I take my truck to our local 4x4 shop, what else should I have them
check out and what is a reasonable price for a gear swap? I just want to
make sure they are treating me right and that the truck’s performance will
be as good as it can be when I have to cross the mountains with the trailer.

ANSWER: There are several things you need to have checked out when
putting a lift and taller tires under any 4x4. Re-gearing is mandatory if you
want the truck’s performance to remain the same, and figuring out which
gear ratio is needed only requires basic math: New Tire Diameter/Old Tire Gearing down one ratio for every 2 inches of tire height is a general rule

In your case, the Nittos you want to run are 36.77 inches in diameter,
while the stock tires on your Super Duty are 32.64 inches, and the current
axle ratio is 3.55. When the math is done, the new axle ratio comes out to
3.99, which doesn’t exist in normal circles: The common axle ratios are
3.73 or 4.11. So you have the option of running 3.73s with an engine rpm
close to 2,200 at 65 mph in Drive (1:1), or 4.11s and an engine rpm around
2,400. (Your engine should be turning about 2,350 rpm at 65 mph when
the transmission is in Drive with the stock setup.)
Our suggestion in this instance, when trailer towing is involved, is
to err on the side of better acceleration and load-pulling torque with
the lower-ratio 4.11s, which is one of the axle-ratio options Ford offers.
Such a small increase in rpm shouldn’t have any noticeable effect on fuel
economy.
Other things to make note of when you have the lift and taller tires
slipped under your truck is making sure the installation shop pays close
attention to the rear driveshaft and U-joint angles. Most shops that
specialize in lift kits do this already. But we think it would also would
be worthwhile to give the guys at Tom Wood’s Custom Drive Shafts
(4xshaft.com) a call for their input as well. You’re investing a lot of money
on the suspension and re-gearing, so making sure there are no driveline
issues is good insurance that all your money has been well spent.
Prices for gear swaps can vary a lot depending on the quality of the
gears and shop rates. A reasonable price for a Yukon Gear swap package
and labor would be around $2,800. Throw in another $800 to $1,100 to
upgrade from the limited-slip to a mechanical Grizzly Locker or ARB Air
Locker in the rear.
