Introduction

As human beings we were made to move around from one location to

the next, hence the reason the student researcher found it fitting to
explore which mode of transportation dominates the Micoud highway
during peak hours from 7-8 am. The Micoud Highway, also known as
the East Coast Road is located on the east of the island and passes
through a small community called Micoud. This road connects Castries
in the North and Vieux-Fort in the South of the island. The researcher
has decided to use private cars, mini buses, goods vehicles and any
form of hired vehicles in her survey.

5
Method of Data Collection

The student researcher will for six consecutive days from 7-8 am stand
at a set place on the Micoud Highway and make a record of every type
of vehicle in her survey which proceeds thereon.

Analysis of Data

An assessment of the figures shows that of the one thousand and forty
six vehicles that traversed the Micoud Highway from 7-8am for six
consecutive days, the greatest number were private cars which had a
total of six hundred and ninety, secondly Mini buses with a total of one
hundred and ninety, thirdly good vehicles with a total of one hundred
and four and fourthly hired cars with a total of fifty two which recorded
the lowest number.

13
Discussion of Findings

In the researcher’s survey the goal was to find what mode of

transportation dominated the Micoud Highway at peak hours from 7-
8am.Recordings were made and it was observed in the summary of
data that of the number of vehicles recorded daily, private cars
surpassed every other mode of transportation. Mini buses resulted
second highest with the exception of day three where goods vehicles
recorded the second highest. On day two as well as day four there was
no record of goods vehicles hence making it the third highest. Hired
cars recorded the least number.

Findings were converted into percentages and presented on a pie chart

and bar graph.

But why is this so? The determining factors of these results are:

 Independence - having one’s own car means not having to rely on

others for his/her travel needs.
 Convenience – The ability to operate on one’s own means that
the only person’s schedule or hectic life one need to worry about
is his/her own.
 Saves you time – Being able to cross town in a matter of minutes
saves a lot of time on one’s daily commute.
 Opens up the World –One of the amazing benefits/advantages is
the ability to cover large distances with ease.

14
Conclusion

In conclusion knowing that this Highway connects the North and South
of the Island, the researcher found it intriguing to carry out a survey at
its most hectic time .The data shows beyond a doubt that private cars
dominates the Micoud Highway during peak hours 7-8am.
