Subject: Government of India has officially recognised acupuncture as independent system in India.

Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Department of Health Research) has
now officially released an office order No. U-11018/03/2018-hr/E-OFFICE: 3164145 on 21st Feb’19
that Acupuncture system is now recognised as an independent system in India

In context to this an Inter-departmental committee was constituted on 20.10.2016 for identifying

new systems of medicine. Thereafter the proposal for recognisation of acupuncture in India was also
given. The proposal was examined and discussed by the committee in various meetings held on
04.10.2017 and 09.01.2018. Now they have came out with the officially order of recognising
Acupuncture as an Independent system in India.

This is the biggest milestone achieved in the history of acupuncture in India. This demand of
recogniastion was raised by the Director of Dr D.N. Kotnis Acupuncture Health & Education Centre,
and Secretary of jt Acupuncture Science Association, India for providing complete status to
Acupuncture in India. Punjab state, is already having a full fledged acupuncture hospital in Ludhiana
which is a country’s first indoor acupuncture hospital and training centre and is also recently
recognised by World Federation of Acupuncture- Moxibustion Societies (WFAS), NGO in relation
with WHO.

Acupuncture is a complete science in itself and is already recognised to be practiced worldwide as a

mode of therapy. This addition of new system in Indian health care facilities will provide much
option to general public for their health related issues. This system will help to reduce the health
budget as it is economical system. Very soon the expert committees will be formed for teaching,
training and certification. Previously two states in India, West Bengal and Maharashtra had already
giving recognisation to acupuncture and now it is being centrally recognised. Now it is the time for
Government of Punjab to recognise it in the state so that full degree and diploma courses can be
started – said Dr Inderjit Singh.
