Exercise 4: Draft Video Script- How to Prepare for an HR Internship Interview

*Picture of the University of Houston is displayed*

Emily: As an Human Resource Development student at the University of Houston, I know how

intimidating it is to begin your journey into your professional career. It is highly recommended

by professors and HRD professionals to gain that experience early on through an internship.

*Short clip of various online job sites is displayed*

Emily: With the use of technology, it is simple to apply online. But how to you prepare for that

one on one interaction with a potential employer? The following are 3 steps I personally took to

prepare for internship interviews:

Step One: Professional Communication

Emily: Once you have been selected to interview with a company, it is important to

communicate in a professional and quick manner. They have shown interest in you, so in order to

create a good impression it is recommended to respond with gratitude for their time and

consideration prior to your first meeting. Because email is the most common form of

communication for interview inquires, create a professional email address containing your full

name, as well as a customized signature that includes your email address and the best phone

number to reach you with.

Step Two: Research the Company

Emily: Do as much research as you can to figure out what exactly the company does, where they

started, and where they want to be. Mentioning their corporate goals will show your interviewer

your interest in the company. You can also start a conversation about their current projects or

recent news and get their ideas on where the company is headed.

Step Three: Presentation

*Insert Video of Business Attire*

Emily: You are expected to dress the part; this means planning your outfit ahead. There are

many low-cost alternatives to business attire and will make a huge difference in regard to your

first impression. Make sure you feel comfortable and look for clothes that are appropriate, but

also show a little of your personality. The company should list what kind of style is appropriate

for their company. If not, ask your contact what you are expected to wear.

*Insert a crowd cheering sound to enhance excitement*

Emily: And there you have it; three simple steps to prepare for your internship interview

process. There are a ton of online sources such as articles and videos that can further explain

these necessary and easy steps to land that internship of your dreams!
