Introduction

Field Study 2 is the continuous fulfilment in the field study subject. The
task is to have the Pre-service teacher observe on how the mentor or teacher
manage classroom, doing the discipline and how to let the children behave
well.

This one unit-course will enable the Pre-service teacher to recognize

the different kind of aspects of mentoring, how to manage the classroom and
strategies used by the cooperating teacher. A collection of techniques that
teachers use to motivate effective learning in order to minimize distractions
and misbehaviors.

A learning to a well classroom management can help Pre-service

Teacher in the future how to apply the techniques and proper discipline
without the use of physical punishment. For time goes by, the knowledge and
safety of the children is in our hands.
Acknowledgment

First and foremost, above all the people I thank is God because he give me
encouragement to pursue this requirement and more days of this semester.

Second are my parents who support me financially and morally.

Third my classmates and friends who are there to help me complete this
requirement. Lindon, Marian and some close friends I have in the classroom.
Without them, for sure this requirement will took longer than the date required
but I won’t let that happen but it is more burdening when I am all alone.
Sacrifices and time to pursue the success is priceless.

To the Principal of Bankerohan Elementary School, Mrs. Estrella U. Geven, it

is grateful to let us students visit in the school. For being so kind and nice.

To our Cooperative teacher, Mrs, we thank her for being very kind and
welcoming us

APPENDIX D: CHECKLISTS FOR COMMUNICATION SKILLS
This instrument should be used to assess the PST’s communication skill on the
areas specified in the checklist by his/her mentor. Each PST will also rate his/her
own buddy.

Direction: Check the appropriate box that will assess your own communication skills
and that of your buddy as you interact with each other and with the cooperating
teacher. The mentor will use the same instrument in rating the PST buddies assigned
under him/her.

Today is the starting point of our journey again as Pre-service

Teachers in Field Study 2 which observing mentor’s classroom management
skills in the teaching-learning process applied in the classroom. Together with
my classmates and substitute cooperating teacher of Sir Lloyd Coming: Sir
Clint Trocio at Bankerohan Elementary School again. However, before that,
we are oriented what are the do’s and dont’s whenever we are already in our
assigned classrooms. Like no taking pictures are allowed because it might
disrupt the attentiom of the students from their teacher, PSTs should not be
late to avoid missing details and whatever that is forbidden and inappropriate.
After the rules and regulations, we are divided into groups and in each group
is three members or also called as my buddies. I am so happy because my
buddies will be Macaranas and Polvadora but Polvadora is absent.

Our assigned classroom is in Grade 5-Dahlia and our cooperating

teacher’s name is Blesilda P. Acebes. At first I observed that she is a jolly and
patient teacher. She welcomed us in a nice way as well as her students. That
is why we are very comfortable to move in her advisory classroom but not in
tolerating manner. It is just that we can talk to each other with my buddy
Macaranas. Actually our cooperating teacher agreed with us to take pictures
but only at the very back of the classroom so the students won’t be disturbed.

She is very informative and jolly in discussing her lessons. She love
and used to giving the students hint. Moreover she is also has a sense of
humor. Even us, laugh even those are children jokes. This is because the
students can create idea on their minds or either to speak out what they know
about the topic. It is a good strategy because the students can still be active
and participative while she discuss and to avoid the students neglecting the
lessons. If ever she caught some misbehaving students, she do not get mad
instead she will call them in a calm way and-smile. No wonder that her
students love her so much and she is also a friend of all her children in her
classroom. Why? They all listen to her. Most of them participate sometimes
interrupt but in good manner.
I observe her classroom is in good ambience. Full of charts and other
learning materials. Our CT’s classroom is like the essence of her feminity
because it is very clean and I can see how she manage her students as well
to be disciplined and to be a good model like her.

On her first discussion – Araling Panlipunan. She group them into two.
First group will pretend that they are the Spanish Christians and the second
group will be the Muslims. They will play like they are in a war. This is to
demonstrate the history also. Whoever group wins will have the score.

2nd Discussion is Math. Before she teach lessons, they sing their song
about math. This kind of strategy is good because through that song,
whenever they be on discussion and they have a topic that is in the song they
can easily answer. Moreover singing educational songs is a good practice and
it is inspiring as well.

A 2nd day task is coming. We are observing on attendance, seating

arrangement and handling materials. However the classroom wherein we are
assigned is not present today. Therefore, me and my buddies collaborate with
other groups in other classrooms.

We chose to be in Grade 1 classroom under the advisory of Mrs. Mary

Jane S. Dayon. Mrs. Mary Jane, is also very kind. She is a kind of teacher
who use technology perhaps kids really loves colors and clipart pictures. She
speaks in english to her pupils when it is english subject. She never use
vinocular. She also gives them questions of what the word means like how to
read sleeping, cooking and so on.

It is surprising that children on this level already knows how to read and
knows the meaning of words. Most of them can answer than the number of
students in higher levels. Her technique is giving the children a discussion for
the previous day and repeat it twice the next day to make them remember
before during quiz.

This day in Bankerohan Elementary School is that some of the sections
don’t have classes today due to medical check-ups but in the assigned
classroom that we have which is the grade 5 daisy is having classes.

Our cooperating teacher said that every Friday is their quiz schedule so
we just observe her on how she do quizzes.

She review the previous discussion in science like what are the
accurate temps and ask them what would be the count of temps. After the
quizzes we went home.,

Today is the 4th day of our Field study. However, this time, I am
assigned in the other section together with the other group: Alino, Amang and
ate Apani. We are in the kindergarten level whose adviser is Mrs. Rochel B.
Bugcal. Since it is friday, it is Friday, Mrs. Bugcal, give a spelling quiz to the
kids.

She is somewhat strict but in the level that is suitable for kindergarten
pupils. I observe that the pupils nowadays are very different unlike before, we
never talk back to our teachers. We even shake to fear once we are going to
be punished. Today, I observed that children even know how to be sarcastic
to their teachers. I was really astonished and covered my mouth because I
almost chuckled instead of being irritated. The teacher too though has a lot of
patience and it is not allowed to punish kids anymore. Maybe they are
tolerating their manners and by this, it is a test for us and a reason to be more
patient.

The 5th day of deployment. Our assigned classroom is not present
again for today because the teachers as well as our cooperating teacher
Ma’am Acebes is in the seminar for the approaching election. Therefore, I am
assigned again in the Kindergarten classroom but I don’t have my buddies
with me. This day Ma’am Bugcal didn’t had discussion instead they practice
singing and marching for their coming graduation.

It is their first practice on this day. She taught them to arrange on the
line and where to go sit after marching. After they march, they sang the
graduation song. As a Pre-service teachers, we also cooperate with them. We
pretend to be the teachers sitting in front of the stage. We are so happy to
practice with them. I see how they follow and behave well during practice
even they are very naughty but they are kids and a lot of things to be applied
for them to grow more in minds and hearts.

March 22, 2019

Today is the last day of our observation in the Bankerohan Elementary

School. When I was going to our assigned classroom in grade 5 it was closed.
I didn’t have idea that ma’am Acebes was also an adviser in grade 3. So I
went there. Since this is the last day, I just ask for the class list and seat plan
but after that I sat with other group mates to observe again for the last time.

Their first subject is Science. The topic was all about the parts of the
earth. Our CT use instructional materials such as T.V. to show them how the
earth is created and what parts are in it. It is very informative and child friendly
animations. After they watched the educational animation, Ma’am asks them
what they learn about the Earth and ask them what parts are there. She is
very enjoying and friendly as always. Even me I enjoyed listening to her
because she has the enthusiasm and passion in teaching. In short she is very
jolly.

Classroom Management Skills

The general atmosphere starts of how the teacher treats her students
primarily. With her positive and caring attitude and thoughtful construction
within the physical environment and that is the first thing I observed from my
cooperating teacher. A teacher like her creates a positive physical and
emotional atmosphere. She also knows how to organize the classroom neatly
and methodically to control confusion and stress. Example of this she knows
where to place the books accordingly in order to be easily found by the pupils.

As a teacher, technically in public speaking, she also has a good

system in distributing and collecting materials of instruction. She has a
different strategy in roll calling, instead of just calling their names, she call
them one by one to answer what are their recent topics or to read a story or
anything instead of just saying “present”. In roll calling, she do the different
strategy in order to build confidence of the students in each day that will pass
by and because of that, they would not be afraid to answer what they want to
speak out. It is a great strategy as well.

Moreover, students are always filled with papers, contributed and

collected back and forth. However our cooperating teacher did a good
strategy in order not to have disorganization and misplacing of papers.
Obviously she plans ahead like how many examination papers should she
distribute to them. When she also do quizzes she instruct students to turn
around when passing the papers to his or her classmate behind instead of just
tossing it. As I was thinking this would also prevent hitting the paper on the
face of the person behind. The last but not the least, a reminder on the board
is always prevent in order for the pupils not to forgot what are their
assignments and on the other hand they will know how to look at the
schedules. Books cannot also be forgotten always. Everytime she discuss,
books are the most important of all. After she discuss she asks them what
they have had learn about the discussion and vice versa, the students may
ask. She also teach them on how to ask permission in entering and leaving
the classroom. She hold meetings with the parents as necessary in order for
her to teach them on how to write excuse letters or permission letters
whenever their children will be absent on her class.

Competency

First of all and the most important is the classroom management. I

want to establish expectations such as class rules posted on a wall. It is also
imperative for me to explain this rules to them for them to know what should
be the good things they need to do. Getting ahead of schedule, setting
expectations, the classroom should always be organize, checking for
understanding of myself and for the students and most of all I wanted to
create adaptable lessons for them. I observed and being encouraged with my
cooperating teacher because she is friendly with her students but still with a
boundary because she is the mother of them all. She always boost their
confidence with her light voice and smiling appearance. She is greatly
respected too because is considerate to them and they are not afraid of her
once they approach her. Once she is being asked with her students, she
answer them well and completely and equally to her from her students as
well.

Communication Skills

Despite of having students’ misbehaviors being given with attention,

like talking while she is discussing and roaming around while the class is still
on, she just breath and try to remain calm, after that she try to set a positive
tone and show an appropriate response like “I like you ____ right now, but
your behavior is unacceptable.” And once she says that she will ask them if
they would not do that again and wait for the student to respond of why he or
she misbehave. Since I observe that listening is the most important. Most of
all I also saw to her that she remain courteous even she feels irritated.

A child friendly atmosphere is also important in communication skills

because through clean and cool place students and teachers feels happy and
that what I observed in the assigned classroom we had. It is cool and not
humid and everyone enjoys cool not hot sunny place.
