Acknowledgement

We both have taken efforts to complete this assignment and through this, learnt
the purpose underlying within it. It was the combined efforts of many
individuals who spared some time to fill the questionnaire, without which the
assignment would not have been completed. The opinion piece is the outcome
of all the learning and activities conducted in class which moulded our strong
opinion towards the topic.

We would like to show a special gratitude to our respected Sir, Prof. Chirag
Trivedi, without whose guidance this report would not be drafted. We would
also like to thank Mr. Jalaj Singh who has helped us as and when needed
throughout the journey of learning.

Women Empowerment

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT, A CHANGE IN

IDEOLOGIES

Empowerment is a multi-dimensional process that helps individuals gain control over their
own lives. Empowerment is the process of increasing the degree of autonomy and self-
determination in individuals that enable them to represent their interests in an authorized
manner. A sense of empowerment reflects an increase in personal value that comes out of
real-life influence in some areas of life. However, women empowerment suggests women's
ability to make strategic life choices where that ability had been previously denied to them.
It's a process of maintaining the benefits available to women at an individual, household and
community level by boosting her status through education, training and raising awareness. It's
also a process in favour of women where gender roles are redefined and this allows women to
acquire the ability to choose between alternatives which previously they were restricted from.

“There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.”
The concept of empowering women isn't a new one. The need for it was highlighted since
ancient history. All around the globe, women have faced many atrocities and inequalities.
Empowering women would help them in many ways. They would be able to lead a self -
esteemed and dignified life. It would boost their confidence and they would be eligible to
gain respectable positions in society. They would become independent and would be able to
frame their own identity. They would no more need to compromise or sacrifice their needs
and would also give a valuable contribution to the economy of the country. Women
empowerment would give them a level of freedom which they weren't getting in past years.
There is nothing revolutionary whatsoever about the control of women's bodies by men. The
woman's body is the terrain on which patriarchy is erected.
Patriarchy is a system in which males hold a supreme power and this social nature had
oppressed women for years. From birth till death, women face many atrocities which hamper
their development. From her birth, the girl child faces much discrimination and is deprived of
education and opportunities. They are considered a burden on the family. Families think that
there is no need to educate them as they are supposed to do household chores only. Also, a

female child is less preferable as they would have to give dowry for her marriage. That's the
reason why people indulge in the practice of female foeticide and mercilessly kill the female
child in the womb of the mother. Also, women are the victims of rape, domestic violence,
discrimination, eve-teasing, stalking, molestation, acid attacks and also till times back of Sati
pratha, Dudhpeeti, child marriage, etc which was abolished by various efforts by
revolutionaries. Keeping aside the facts, many women have raised their voices and came
forward to become empowered. There were many obstacles in the path towards equality.
Even though many laws were passed in favour of women empowerment, there was a
disparity in wages offered to male and female employees. Though women were empowered
and were out to work they were paid less compared to their male counterparts for the same
task. This gender gap was reduced by announcing absolute pay parity by some big
companies. Women also faced emotional abuse in the form of nasty comments and
objectification by the society which proved to be a hurdle in empowerment.

“Manhood – A big question?!”

Insensitivity towards males is an increasing problem because men too are burdened with
unshared financial responsibility. In addition to that, they are also expected to stay strong
physically, emotionally and mentally to prove their manhood. Society remains lenient
towards women for this matter and expects them to be decorated dolls and remain busy in
maintaining family relations. Also, a man is expected to be okay in marring relatively under-
qualified women but people do not wish to engage their sons with a relatively more qualified
girl because they take education level to mark the simplicity of a girl. They think ‘more
qualified the girl is, more tantrums they will have bear after marriage’. Hence, they do not
prefer such girls. They typically want their sons to dominate his wife. Now the matter of
concern is that we not only lack in achieving equality at workplaces but also at the family
level which will eventually lead to equality in all fields.

“I shall never do a man's work, for less than a man's pay." - Clara Barton
Even in Bollywood, such conditions are witnessed by actresses when they are paid less even
for working with the same amount of hard work and determination as male actors. Their
payback always remains less. The major cause is gender inequality which is a worrisome
condition in such a modern industry. Also earlier the directors did not make any films without
a lead actor male because they believed that without a hero the film remains incomplete and
the audience will not prefer to watch such a movie.

Women Empowerment

However, even of these disparities, Aishwarya Rai managed to secure great success in this
film industry. Her talent got immense public recognition in 1994 firstly, when she adjudged
Miss India and Miss World simultaneously and stepped towards the path of success. She was
the first Indian film personality to be honoured of becoming a guest and jury for the Cannes
film festival in 2003. Though, being a woman, she proved her skills and talents in front of the
world and alarmed the people of women's worthy existence.

“Strong men - men who are truly role models - don't need to put down women to make
themselves feel powerful. People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly
powerful bring others together. ”

Due to the inheritance of Patriarchy, many men feel themselves to be superior and suppress
the development of the other gender. Since times, women are made to do household chores
and take care of children and family. This is indeed induced in the culture and has become a
part of gender roles. The role of women is confined to the four walls of the house and the role
of men is to earn bread to feed the family. However, these defined societal roles aren't
patented ones. A considerable number of women have realized this and recognized a genuine
need for dignity and respect of her gender which would come only through empowerment.
Women empowerment is a sensitive issue and different individuals have diverse opinions on
it. There are many voices that have come up in the form of #Me-too movement which was
against sexual assault and harassment faced by women in the society. It gained global
popularity and the movement, to a great extent highlighted the seriousness of the issue in all
strata of the society. It was also followed by voices raised by many women for the incidents
witnessed by them and shares them fearlessly.
Also, the #HeForShe campaign was initiated with the aim of motivating the world's
population to raise their voice against the rigid stereotypes against gender equality. This
campaign also highlighted that equality is a humanitarian issue and for that gender equality is
a must. It succeeded in grabbing the attention of a wide range of individuals and also brought
a change in the mindset of many men across the globe.

Women Empowerment

"If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate
the entire generation."
If women are given equal and enough opportunities, they can perform much better than men
in many aspects. Certain problems of society can be better solved if women are educated and
made aware. They could understand, in a better way, the consequences of overpopulation and
can change the scenario by proper family planning if given a chance to make decisions.
However, though women are equipped with the idea of empowerment, they are still not able
to grab the opportunities. Keeping aside men's viewpoints and concentrating on women,
surveys found that many women find themselves comfortable with domination and
confinement. They feel safer to be in the four walls of the home and deny stepping out for
gaining recognition. Many women, even after being educated don't pursue their careers due to
the influence of the societal norms. Societal pressure and comments like, "Who would take
care of family and who would teach values to children if women would go to work” have
clutched the hands of many women. The belief that the role of women is confined to the
household chores is so imbibed in the mindset of majority women that it becomes difficult for
them to come out of it. Even modern educated women are convinced by their parents and
society to either leave the idea of a career or maintain a balance between work and home.
Women in many families are allowed to work only if they comply with work along with
fulfilling her societal gender roles. In addition to this, many working women are reported to
quit their jobs due to increased responsibilities after the birth of the child. Such condition is
really sad as the responsibility of taking care of children and family is not only of women but
of both men and women. So all the roles have to be distributed among both rather than just
calling it as a woman's responsibility. However, now women are alerted about the disparity
and are now raising their voices for equality and bringing a change. Though this change is
limited to certain sections of society, it is gradually spreading its importance across newer
sections and communities.
Entertainment mediums like films, advertisements, daily soaps, etc create a strong image on
an individual's mind to tackle the situations around them.
But what if these mediums convey negative messages or involve in negative publicity? It
directly affects the human mentality negatively. Societies cannot adopt modern changes. This
is reflected in the media too. Everyone can just talk about the change but will never initiate it.
If we really want to improve the societal thinking we need to start it right from our home i.e.
by censoring the advertisements, daily soaps that depict domination of one gender over the
other.

Women Empowerment

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.”

Feminism is a way to give equal rights to all the genders individually, culturally, politically,
economically and in all possible views. Feminism is often considered as a voice against men
rather than being a voice towards equality. In my opinion, feminism is a shout out for the
need of humanity for women, their well being and the life of their choice. It also includes
women taking decisions without getting influenced by "YOU ARE A GIRL" ideology.
Feminism in general terms can be referred to as giving equal rights, responsibilities, positions
enjoyed by men since ages without any external interference or societal pressure. This
approach is also an elimination of dependency of women for their essentials and luxury on
men. In my view, this will also lead to the betterment of the male section as they will be able
to do something for themselves rather than doing interest fewer jobs just for the sake of
running their families. Women have successfully played their role in families and if given
proper guidance they can progress society too with their intelligence and incredible
leadership power. Feminism is not just a need for women but it is a need for worldwide
progress.

Every action of ours comes from a set of societal patterns. Such patterns are embedded
strongly in the mindsets of people. Those who challenge these social norms and ensure
sensitivity in their own mindsets, as well as those who try to raise a voice for sensitization,
are able to break the stereotypes and bring a change.

Name If women work than who would take care of household work and family?
What are your views?
Vrushti Akhani I think both men and women can divide their work.
Aneri If we can earn we can have other options like cook
Geetika It can be anybody in the family.
Vedanshi thakkar Husband and wife should have equal responsibilities and if that not possible nowadays
everybody prefers full time servants
Tithi wife & husband both of them
Shivani Both the partners have to take care of households and family.
Sherin Shah Everyone in the family have the responsibility for all work
Not only women's
Every member of the family can come together and make it possible to maintain a balance
between work and home
Simoni shah I think women can balance both and sometimes if husband or male member helps her then it's
not a big deal
Stuti shah Women should work along with handling the household work and is not able to handle households
Then she can hire a helper who can do the household works. But the responsibility of women to
Handle households in a way she can afford.
Jimmy Panchal House and family is responsibility of every human and not only woman. So if you are staying
In joint family than it’s not your problem; they can take care of each other. If not than you can
Definitely hire helpers like cook or maid/maidens.
Preksha Agarwal A women can have balance between both the things and can coordinate their passion and
Responsibilities together.

Shriya Pancholi Women should not be reduced to child rearing just because they have given birth to them,

Conclusion

The data collected from the questionnaires, we realized that there is a significant change
in ideologies over time. However, the change isn't highlighted much, as it is burdened with
the culturally imbibed thoughts and so it faces negligence. Although, the male group of
individuals are supporting women empowerment, the strength in their voice is missing. There
is still a trace of doubt in the mindsets of people which suppress the thought of empowerment
to much extent. Also, the female population often give up to the long lived ideas of WOMEN
which hinder the hope for development.
Apart from this, still there are many men and women who are striving towards the path of
equality and thus building up on ideas of empowerment.
All such views and data about ideologies of individuals from different sections of the society
was collected in the form of questionnaires, analysed, carefully scrutinized and drafted as the
opinion piece.
It's an urge to all the individuals coming across the report to consider the ideas highlighted
and work upon them as and when possible in their day to day life chores. Our efforts would
bore fruits if even some of the individuals in society take away something from our learning’s
and are motivated and inspired to bring a change.
