What is a Learning Style?


Information enters your brain three main ways: sight, hearing and touch, which
one you use the most is called your Learning Style
New Zealand-based teacher Neil D. Fleming is the originator of the VARK®, or
visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic classification
• Visual Learners learn by sight
• Auditory Learners learn by hearing
• Read/Write Learn by read and write
• Tactile Learners (kinesthetic) learn by touch

This type of learners prefers information that is spoken or heard. Making
statements and using questions are an important for those with this preference.

If you have a strong preference for learning by Aural methods (A =


hearing) you should use some or all of the following:

To take in the information:


 attend classes
 attend discussions and tutorials
 discuss topics with others
 discuss topics with your teachers
 explain new ideas to other people
 use a recording device
 remember the interesting spoken examples, stories, jokes…
 describe the overheads, pictures and other visuals to somebody who was not
there
 leave spaces in your notes for later recall and ‘filling.’

Study tips for Auditory Learner


• Your notes may be poor because you prefer to listen. You will need to
expand your notes by talking with others and collecting notes from books.
• If possible, record the study material, and listen to it frequently.
• Ask others to ‘hear’ your understanding of a topic.
• Read your summarised notes aloud.
• Explain your notes to another person with an Aural preference.
• Use word association to remember facts and lines.
• Provide oral along with written instructions.
• Include whole group discussions.
• Watching audio-visual which compliment the written test.
• They take longer time to read a passage, so give them sufficient time to
read.
• Allow them to listen to music while studying, specially math's or science.
• Repeat facts with closed eyes.

To perform well in examination:


 Imagine talking with the examiner.
 Listen to your voices and write them down.
 Spend time in quiet places recalling the ideas.
 Practice writing answers to old question papers.
 Speak your answers aloud or inside your head.
