Initial Course Proposal


Proposed By: Samantha Lilly
Course Title: 4th Grade Reading: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Course Description:
This course is focused on the fundamentals for Reading a fictional chapter
book. This 30 chapter selection will engage the reader but also require mini
understanding checks as well as using different reading strategies. These
checks may be in the form of a question, an online quiz or a posting. One will
also need imagination to complete a mid-course project. There will also be a
“review” for the final assessment. This course will be taught over a 12 week
period.

Rational:
The teachers at Northern Lehigh are teaching Reading the same way. They
are personally getting bored with the way Reading is taught and are looking
for different ways to teach the content and skills.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify and describe the main characters, setting
and theme of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
2. Students will create and write a paragraph explaining why their candy bar
has the desirable characteristics Willy Wonka is looking for.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate the proper skill by completing a mini
assessment.
4. Students will discuss the character traits of the main characters and
provide sited examples.

Standards/Common Core:

1.1 Foundational Skills-gain working knowledge of concepts of print, alphabetic


principle and other basic conventions.
CC.1.1.4.E Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

1.3 Reading Literature-read and respond to works of literature—with emphasis on


comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and making connections among ideas and
between texts with focus on textual evidence.
CC.1.3.4.A Determine a theme of a text from details in the text; summarize the text.
CC.1.3.4.B Cite relevant details from text to support what the text says explicitly and make
inferences.
CC.1.3.4.C Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on
specific details in the text.
CC.1.3.4.J Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and
domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or
states of being and that are basic to a particular topic.
CC.1.3.4.K Read and comprehend literary fiction on grade level, reading independently and
proficiently.

1.4 Writing-Students write for different purposes and audiences. Students write
clear and focused text to convey a well-defined perspective and appropriate content.
CC.1.4.4.A Write informative/ explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and
information clearly.
CC.1.4.4.B Identify and introduce the topic clearly.
CC.1.4.4.C Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other
information and examples related to the topic; include illustrations and multimedia when useful
to aiding comprehension.
CC.1.4.4.D Group related information in paragraphs and sections, linking ideas within categories
of information using words and phrases; provide a concluding statement or section; include
formatting when useful to aiding comprehension.
CC.1.4.4.G Write opinion pieces on topics or texts.
CC.1.4.4.L Demonstrate a grade-appropriate command of the conventions of standard English
grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

Instructor:
The instructor will be available between 9:15-10 and 3-3:3o Monday through
Friday for video conferencing or email/chat. If this time is not suitable then
please email Mrs. Lilly at sjr1986@aol.com for a more acceptable time.
