VIRGINIA: IN THE CIRCUIT COURT FOR THE CITY OF NORFOLK

ROY L. PERRY-BEY,
RONALD M. GREEN,

Plaintiffs, Case No: CL1900281600

v.

CITY OF NORFOLK,

Defendants.

AFFIDAVIT OF PAUL T. JERSILD

Your Name, being duly sworn, deposes and states as follows:

1. I am Dr. Paul T. Jersild, retired clergyman, and submit this affidavit of

support in the above stated action.

2. I am a resident and registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and

am deeply concerned over the meaning and impact of the Confederate

monument on East Main Street in Norfolk. We now recognize that monument

as a symbol of the sordid Jim Crow era, one of many erected in the late

nineteenth and early twentieth century. It expresses the ideology of the "Lost

Cause" and the spirit of white supremacy. It is a symbol that conveys profound

disrespect for our black citizens in particular, but also for our democratic

heritage which insists on the equality of all citizens. It represents a piece of our

history that ought not be celebrated or exploited. It should be removed from its

present location and relocated to an appropriate cemetery.
