At the heart of the Buddha’s teaching is the insight that freedom and awakening are
possible only through dissolving attachment. It is attachment in its countless forms,
whether material, emotional, or intellectual, that locks us inside suffering and obstruct our
attempts at genuine spiritual practice. In this teaching, Venerable Lobsang Palbar will
guide us through one of the essential teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, “Parting with the Four
Attachments.” The teaching consists of four lines:

“If you have attachment to this life, you are not a religious person.
If you have attachment to samsara, you do not have renunciation.
If you have attachment to your own purpose, you do not have enlightenment thought.
If grasping arises, you do not have the view.”
