Stage 1 – Desired Results

Content Standards(s):
7.L1U1.9
Students develop an understanding of the structure and function of cells.
 Construct an explanation to demonstrate the relationship between major cell structures and
cell functions (plant and animal).

Understanding (s)/goals Essential Question(s):

Students will understand:  What are the differences between plant
 The function and structure of cells in and animal cells?
plants and animals.  What are the similarities between plant
 How to label the structures inside a cell. and animal cells?
 How to differentiate a plant and animal
cell.
Student objectives (outcomes):
Students will be able to:
 Label the different parts of cells.
 Differentiate the difference between plant and animal cells.
Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence
Performance Task(s): Other Evidence:
 Split students into different groups each  Show different cells and different cell
with a diagram of a cell and have them structures on the board and see have
race to see who can name all the part of them tell you what is being shown.
the cell first.
Stage 3 – Learning Plan
Learning Activities: Have students fill out the cell structures and see who can do it the fastest.

Pre-Assessment: Ask students what cells are, what they make up, and what is inside them.

Procedure: Present the PowerPoint to the students and explain the cell parts. Draw the cell parts on
the board to the students can physically see them individually.

Materials: Assignment with cell structures for students to fill out.

Extensions & Enrichment: Go outside and let the students look at plants so they can try to see the
little cells in the plant.

Differentiated Instruction: Have a crossword for students to do if they grasp the concept fast. The
definitions would be what a cell structures function is and the words are what match the function.

Accommodations: Learn how to say the names of the cell structures in a different language if one of
your students doesn’t speak English. Put students with peers they are comfortable with if they do
not like working in groups.
Technology: Power point presentation with the different cell structures and descriptions of them.
