1. Write short notes on the following:
a) What are the assumptions made in the theory of simple bending?
b) For a given stress compare the moment of resistance of a square section when placed
with two sides horizontal and with one diagonal horizontal.
c) Prove maximum shear stress is 4/3 times average shear stress for a circular section.
d) Derive an expression for the shear stress produced in a circular shaft when subjected to
torsion listing the assumptions made.
e) Find an expression for slope at the supports of a simply supported beam carrying a point
load at the center.
f) Explain Macaulay’s method of finding out slope and deflection in beams.
g) Differentiate between short column and long column.
h) Define slenderness ratio and state the limitations of Euler’s formula.
(5×8=40 marks)
PART B
2. A beam simply supported at its end has the top flange 100mm×80mm thick, web
120mm× 30mm, and bottom flange 120mm×50mm thick. It is loaded with an udl over whole of
its span. If the beam is 8m long, find the udl if maximum permissible bending stress in tension is
limited to 30N/mm2 and in compression is limited to 45N/mm2.
OR
3. Calculate the cross sectional dimensions of the strongest rectangular beam that can be cut out
of a cylindrical log of wood of diameter 100cm
(15×1= 15 marks)
4. An I section 350mm× 150mm has a web thickness 10mm and flange thickness 20mm. If the
shear force acting on a section of the beam is 40kN, calculate the shear stress at various sections
and draw the shear stress distribution diagram.
OR
5. A hollow circular steel shaft is required to transmit 300HP at 200 rpm. The maximum torque
developed is 1.5 times of mean torque. Determine the external diameter of the shaft if it is double
the internal diameter. The maximum shear stress is not to exceed 80MPa. Take G=82kN/mm2
(15×1= 15 marks)

6. A beam of length 5m of uniform rectangular section is simply supported at its ends. It carries
an udl of 9kN/m run over the entire length. Calculate the width and depth of the beam if
permissible bending stress is 7N/mm2 and central deflection is not to exceed 1cm. Take E=
1×104N/mm2
OR
7. A horizontal steel girder having uniform cross section is 14m long and is simply supported at
its ends. It carries two concentrated loads of 12kN and 8kN at 3m and 9.5m from the left end.
