The Gize Input Fields are behind the control

The button has been necessary because the

because it works fine in other applications.

A. USING THE PROGRAM.

Enter data in cells with ? and overwrite data in unprotected

cells if the default values are not to be used.

Use [Pgdn], [Pgup] and cursor keys to move around the worksheet.
Alternatively press [Ctrl] to reveal input options. Invoking one
of these options allows you to go automatically to input cells
using only the cursor keys, the [Enter] key is disabled in this
mode. Use [Esc] to exit the input mode and prior to invoking any
of the other function keys. If you do try to invoke more than 1
function at the same time, you will probably see some "garbage"
near the top left of the screen, if so, simply press [Esc] a
number of times & reselect the required function.

the use of the data saving & retrieving, and printing functions.

B. DEFINITIONS.

RV MAIN LINE :
Section of line which is expected to have the largest pressure
drop contribution (based on routing).

PROCESS LINE 1 & 2 :

Any sections of line, either upstream or downstream of the RV
main line, which have a different flow or size.

RV INLET LINE :
Line immediately upstream of RV if different from RV main line.

(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page4
B. DEFINITIONS (Continued).

VESSEL NOZZLE SIZE :

Nozzle of vessel protected by RV and source of pressure (used
for calculating vessel exit loss).

FLOW EXIT VESSEL :

This may be greater than the relief valve under consideration,
eg. multiple valves or where credit can be taken for onward
flow (used for calculating vessel exit loss).

[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page5
C. GENERAL NOTES.

The worksheet is valid for single phase flows but may also be
used for two phase flow if flow is in the dispersed region and
assuming that the fluid behaves as a single phase fluid. In such
situations, no allowances are made for static heads in vertical
line runs.
When using the discharge line size estimate option, the
additional data required is at the relief valve outlet
conditions. With two phase discharges, vapour flow should be the
maximum achievable at relieving conditions (ie. equivalent to
a rated capacity). For single phase, entry of vapour flow is
not required.

(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page6
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).

For initial estimates of the relief valve inlet line size the
worksheet uses the estimated line length formula of 4D + 30m.
Ensure that the "estimated line pressure drop" is less than the
"allowable pressure drop" unless inlet line is known to be
short or a configuration is available and checked using the
"detailed inlet line configuration" section.

The worksheet will provide a message about the suitability of

the selected line size along with a suggested inlet line size
which satisfies the 4D + 30m requirement.

(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page7
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).

The formulae used to estimate the discharge lines are empirical

and should only be used for an initial estimate. They are only
valid for vapour and two phase (>5wt% vapour) flow and assume
normal layout considerations apply. For unusual cases, further
study may be required to arrive at an initial estimate or a
conservative selection made.

For balanced (or pilot) valves in vapour service, the formula

uses the required relief flow rather than the calculated rated
capacity based on back pressures <=30%. This avoids oversizing
of lines as balanced valves can accept back pressures up to 50%
of set pressure. In such cases, the actual rated capacity will
approach the required capacity with back pressures exceeding 30%
(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page8
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).
The final discharge line size should be determined/confirmed at
the piping layout/flare header design stage.

Velocities in discharge lines are limited to 75% of sonic for

atmospheric discharges and about 50% into closed systems by
these formulae.

[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page9
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).

In the "detailed inlet line configuration" section there is the

option to use a number of different line sizes and flowrates
simultaneously. This is of most use for cases with multiple
relief valves and/or where relief flow is only part of the
flow in the main process line. For a single relief valve the
worksheet defaults to using the "RV main line" column. This
column should normally be used for entering all of the pipe
lengths and fittings associated with that line.

A file (testrvln.wkb), has a worked example of a multiple relief

valve set-up on a distillation tower, which will demonstrate the
flexibility of the worksheet. Obtain a printout of this file by
loading it using `getdata' [F5] and then `print' [F3].
(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page10
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).

If the "actual pressure drop" is greater than the "allowable

pressure drop" due to a high pressure loss through the reducer
at the inlet to the relief valve, it may be possible to reduce
this pressure loss by using two reducers in series. If a block
valve is required upstream of the relief valve, this could be
placed between the two reducers and also means that a smaller
block valve could be used.
For example a 10" inlet line feeding a 4-P-6 relief valve would
have an equivalent length of approximately 220 m (based on 10")
with a 10"x4" reducer, whilst a 10"x6" reducer followed by a 6"
gate valve and a 6"x4" reducer would have an equivalent length
of approximately 100 m (based on 10"). For L/D values of some
common reducers refer to the table later in this help section.
(Continued...)
[PgDn] or [ESC]

Page11
C. GENERAL NOTES (Continued).

If the set pressure is below 3.5 barg then it may be possible

to allow a pressure drop of up to 5% of the set pressure.
However this should be noted on the RV process data sheet, and
agreed with the client as an allowed option.
