Philosophy of Classroom Management

For A High School Physics Class

Having a Classroom Management Plan will help the teacher and students be able to

teach and learn in a classroom effectively and with little to no distractions. Although, before

forming a classroom management plan a teacher must know exactly what he or she thinks is

most important to have in a classroom. I personally think that my philosophy is very close to BF

Skinners Theory of Behaviorism and Reinforcement. I believe that students will act based on

certain rewards and on consequences a given activity. If encouraged to do the right thing the

students will be more complied to complete a given task in order for them to learn what is

needed for that given time frame.

Discipline to me is something that cannot be over looked by a teacher, parent, and even

the student. Without discipline, a student will not understand the importance of an education. He

or she will not take their time to understand why somethings should be done in a certain way and

that in many occasions things will not go as the planned. Without discipline, student will not be

able to work properly with others and might even have a hard time understanding their purpose

and what they would like to do later in their life. Being able to Successfully manage your

classroom will result in a greater learning opportunity for your students. This means having clear

goals, consequences, rules, rewards, and great student-teacher interaction.

Although discipline is very important, I believe that in every classroom the most

important thing should be respect, for one’s self and for others. In order for a classroom be
productive, everyone in the class should be thoughtful of other’s ideas, feelings, emotions, and

beliefs based on things ranging from everyday events to religion. By doing so every student will

be more willing to open themselves and also be willing to participate. Discipline comes with

from Respect, if a student has respect for themselves they will know that in some places it is

wrong to act certain ways not only because they affect themselves but also others.

My Classroom Management plan will be based on what I think is the most important things

in a classroom such as respect, communication, fairness, and safety. For example, my seating

chart will be developed and modified to the needs of the students. It will also make it easier and

faster for them to gather their materials allowing for more time to lecture and answer questions.

The Classrooms Rules will also be made for students to feel safe and be more open minded to

different perspectives and ideas. The Classroom Procedures will allow students to feel safe and

more comfortable in what should be done, since it will be a science classroom I am obligated to

keep the students as safe as possible.

My classroom layout will help students to get their texts books without too much trouble

because the textbooks will be divided in half. This will allow minimal crowding when students

require their textbooks. Any and all materials will be in the back of the room, again distributed

evenly, such as calculators, rulers, tape, paper, and cardboard for when a project is assigned to be

done in class. There will also be a bin for the students to put in their notebooks at the ends of

each week for grading. I will hand it out every Monday at the start of class.

The desks are in rows which will allow the students to interact with those who are at their

table. Each desk will have two students or more depending on the size of the class, this will

allow them to have enough room to do their work. There are also two trashcans that the students

can use to dispose of their trash. My desk will be in the middle so that all the students are able to

see and hear me as well as for me to be able to see them when they work and supervise. They

will all be facing the white board and hopefully we will have a projector that will allow me to

give presentations and interest them in the topic with videos and images.

There will be no assigned seating in my classroom unless students prove to be incapable

of working together sitting next to someone in specific. Only then will their privilege to choose

their seat will be taken. Having the seats in rows also allows students to walk around the seats if

they need to get something from across the room, although I will be getting two of most of the

items needed for the classroom to avoid such movements during the class.

Physics is solely based around the shape of an object, it’s characteristics, and how they can

be affected by the Laws of motion and Energy, so I will not be expecting for the students to

handle hazardous materials. A normal classroom setting will be appropriate for this specific

class. Every student will be asked to know where the fire extinguisher is if not in the classroom.
As well as the fire alarm and the safest way out of the classroom, for which most classrooms

have two doors, and building in case of a fire.

Projects will be displayed on the wall so that every student knows that if they do a good job

they will have an opportunity to have their work on the board. These boards will also be placed

on either side of the classroom so that I have enough room to display as many as I can to be fair

with all the students.

Classroom Expectations/Rules

My classroom will consist of three major rules which be named “The Big 3”.

1.) Respect everyone in the classroom

2.) Don’t speak when others are speaking

3.) Raise your hand if you have something to say

This are the rules I have seen throughout most of my time in school and with most

teachers it has worked. It helps keep order in the class and helps students say what they think

with respect. These rules will also allow a teacher to get through their lesson for the day without

much interruptions from the students. It encourages students to ask questions that others may

have as well as encourages them to speak and participate when I ask questions or ask for

volunteers to solve some problems on the board.

On the second day of school I will ask my students to come up with three to four other

rules for the classroom. This will help them understand why the rules where set as well as know

what they are. This will also let them know I am interested to know what they think and want for

the classroom to be fair and a good learning environment. After agreeing on the rules I will

display them on the front of the class for them to be able to see and remember the rules that they
helped make. Since I will be teaching different class periods, each will have a different set of

rules, which I will change at the beginning of each class period.

I will expect every student to follow the rules out of respect for their peers, themselves,

and their education.

Rewards

Each student will be able to participate for rewards both individually, in groups, and as a whole

class. Rewards often are better than negative reinforcements because it connects with the

students’ positive emotions and not the negative ones. Rewards will encourage students do their

best on projects, as a whole, and individually. It will also encourage students to work together

and try harder to understand their assignment. My rewards will consist of the following…

o Class reward- The whole class will receive pizza if the class maintains an 80% grade

average for the semester. This will allow students who are having trouble to grasp the

material to not still try for this reward.

o Group- for both semesters I will assign a project for groups, made up by the choice of

the students, the highest 3 scores will receive a

o Individual- if the student is able to maintain an 85% grade average they will be invited to

a breakfast celebration with the rest of the students who maintained that grade.

Critical Routines

There will be several classroom routines, each will be the responsibility of the student to

remember as well as mine to remind them for the first couple of weeks. They will be as follow...

o Turn in your homework in the correct basket before starting on the EQ

o Complete/Answer the Essential Question (EQ) every day at the start of class

o Complete the Closure on the last 5 minutes of class

o Turn in your notebooks every Friday at the end of class

These will allow students to have an organized and daily routine. It will also allow me to

keep in mind what needs to be done before the start of each class such as writing down on the

board the EQ, writing out the goal for that class, and a closure question. These will be graded in

their notebook every weekend for a participation grade. Allowing them a whole week to finish

their EQs and Closures will motivate them to attend class and pay attention to the lesson given.

Correction Procedures and Consequences

In every classroom there will be a set of steps taken to correct the actions of a student in

order to improve their learning. They start in a small manner and it leads up to a call home or the

student is sent to the principle. My procedure will be as follows…

1.) Ask the student to stop

2.) Ask to speak with the student outside of the classroom

3.) Detention

4.) A call home

5.) A referral to the office

Having multiple steps allows a student to think about their actions and hopefully they

start to change what they are doing. A teenager is capable of understanding when their actions

are wrong or right, and for this reason I believe that allowing them time to reflect on their actions

students will learn from their mistakes and not be punished immediately. At the same time these
steps are clear enough for students to understand, although they might change depending on the

school’s regulations.

A call home will allow the me to talk with the parents about the problem in order to avoid

the student from having to speak with the principle or counselor. It will give the parents an

opportunity to talk with the student and hopefully change their actions. If this does not provide

the expected results then the student will need to speak with others with more authority, people

who are able to change his or her class schedule.
