1. What are the three components of DRI (Dietary Reference Intake)?

RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance), AI (Adequate Intake), and UL (Tolerable

Upper Intake Level)

2. Describe how RDA, AI, and UL influence health.

The RDA is the level of intake of energy or nutrient, which is considered adequate for the

maintenance of health and well-being of healthy persons (97-98%) in the population, which

includes the specific gender and life stage group (infants, children, adults, and pregnant). It can

be used as a guide for dietary intake by individuals to determine the right amount of nutrients

they need to consume for a healthy lifestyle. The AI is a daily nutrient intake level based on

observed or experimentally-determined approximation of the average nutrient intake by a group

of apparently healthy people that is assumed to sustain a defined nutritional state. It has a similar

purpose as RDA, which is a tool to guide proper and healthy nutrient intake. The UL is the

highest average daily nutrient intake level likely to pose no adverse health effects in the general

population. It is used for chronic daily use or increased interest of food or supplements and

proper amount of intake that does not exceed the amount that can go into toxicity.

3. After reviewing your results on the Interactive DRI, how well are you meeting the RDAs

suggested?

On a daily basis, I consumer an above average amount of carbs per day like pasta and

whole grains, eat green leafy vegetables with fruits, intake of grilled chicken and small amounts

of red meat. I have yet to reduce my intake on simple carbohydrates like sodas, chips, and reduce

the amount of saturated fats. Based from the RDA, I am meeting the sufficient RDAs, which are

2402 kcal/day, macronutrients with 270-390 grams of carbohydrates, 38 grams of total fiber, 44

grams of protein, 53-93 grams of fat, and 3.7 liters of water in my diet.

4. What two changes can you make to improve?

The two changes I can improve is to properly monitor more of the recommended intakes

for my age group in the vitamins and minerals in order to determine the sufficient amount that

prevent chronic diseases like cardiovascular or neurologic diseases. Furthermore, I would

improve on taking dietary supplements to aid in my daily requirements for promotion of good

overall health.
