Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students have to learn and research the events that took place during the Civil War
Representation: Students have the opportunity to use the Timeliner program online, but students are also
able to draw theirs on paper
Action and Expression: Students are able to pick which events of the Civil War they want to put on their
timeline

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will find reputable research articles students can use for their timelines. Students need to find at
least six events that took place in the Civil War. The events are up to the students to choose, but the main
events will be covered and taught in class. Students will work on the computer to complete the timeline.
Students will be assessed based on their information and what events they decided to use. There will be a
rubric used to score and analyze student work. The final project will be used for a reference later as part of a
review for Milestones.
For students of higher learning, they will have to choose more events to include in their timeline. The timeline
should also be in order based on occurrence. The lesson will be concluded by students sharing what events
they thought were important. This will be a time for students to learn what other events students chose to
put in their assignment.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson would be a conclusion to the unit. There are other lessons before this one that would make this
lesson run smoother. For students who need additional instruction, pairing the students up would benefit
them and then they could split the number of events. At the end students could combine their thinking into
one timeline.
