PROJECTS
SKETCHING
Drawing and sketching are central to the
art of animation and can be crucial tools
in designing and developing original
stories, characters and layouts.
Animation requires essential sketching,
technical drawing and ideation
techniques. You get to learn about using
simple shapes and drawing them into
figures and animals, constructing
characters, drawing the 'scapes: land,
t ow n a n d s e a' a n d d ev e l o p i n g
background design.

30
31
STUDENT
PROJECTS
CHARACTER DESIGN
& 2D ILLUSTRATION
Character Design is about creating new,
original characters for a purpose. The
range of character design hierarchy can
go from extremely graphic (like “Hello
Kitty”) to very photo-realistic (as with CG
animated characters like the “Hulk” in
the Avengers film series). A character
can be based on a definition from a
story or script as would be the process in
Feature Films, TV Series, Video Games,
Children’s Books, Web Animation,
Comic Books, Comic Strips, or even
Licensing or Toy Design.

Whether it is with pencil and paper, or

drawing digitally on computers, the
basis of creating a character design is
dependent on drawing ability. The
character development begins with
visualizing the characters from
descriptions given in a story. The
concept artwork of that character then
gets modeled in the computer to create
a 3D version that can then be used in
video games or CG animation. In the
larger studios, another person, not the
character designer, creates the
character modeling.

A good character designer must have a

strong knowledge of all the drawing and
design principles to achieve his/her end
goal, which is, to create an appealing
character that best fits the needs of the
story at hand. It is all about having good
ideas, strong draftsmanship, and a great
eye for design and the only way to gain
those abilities is to draw every day.

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Graphic design is all around
us, in a myriad of forms, both
physical and virtual. This
creative field is considered a

communication as well as

Graphic designers use a
combination of words,
typography, symbols, and
images to create a visual
representation of ideas,
messages and experiences.
Designing graphics is about
the art and practice of
planning and projecting those
ideas with visual and textual
content.

Motion graphics have

informative content. These
are crafted to be experienced

STUDENT
PROJECTS
SCULPTING
Clay Sculpting or clay modeling is
regarded as a highly artistic style for
animation. It allows for the maximum
amount of creativity from students,
through the tips, tricks and techniques
used in crafting clay models for
animation. It gives them a better
perspective on shapes, characters, and
expressions. It sharpens multiple details
like sizes, proportions, space, textures
and colours in a 3D clay character. The
traditional clay sculpting breathes life
into a creation. The surface texturing
through realistic wrinkles, scars, hair, fur
etc allow for an exciting new way of
creative expression. It essentially
supports the development of patience
and focused working in the learners.

In real world, the Sculptors take sketches

or drawings from the Character
Designers and create them three
dimensionally in clay, test the designs
and make changes. Their job is to come
up with how a character will look in 3-D.
To get a distinctive character, the
students need to imagine the character
through their sketches; assemble the
armature (wire skeleton) for clay
application; and build up the shapes and
forms by refining the contours.
Character sculptures are intended to
show the personality of the character,
usually in a pose, expression or emotion.
These sculpts are then digitally mapped
to be used in pre-production in stop
motion, planning and testing design
ideas for the production of characters
through animation. Students are
required to add the necessary effects,
movements, and sound to render a 3D
animated film from their created clay
models.

3D MODELING

The world of 3D is huge. You have

seen countless movies, games, and
commercials full of robots, futuristic
buildings, alien spaceships and
vehicles that make your jaw hit the
floor. You know they couldn't possible
exist in the real world, but at the same
time you are not quite sure how the
artists and filmmakers are able to
bring such amazingly complex
concepts to the silver screen. 3D
animation is all about designing
virtual worlds, creating character, walk
cycles, 3D modeling and texturing,
and keyframe animation. Mastering
this field empowers you to make
movies or TV shows, games, create
visual effects, product designs, stop-
motion animation, and last but not
the least your very own art.

WEBSITE DESIGN

Design is the process of collecting ideas, and

aesthetically arranging and implementing them,
guided by certain principles for a specific purpose. It
is not purely aesthetic or purely functional, but a
combination of both to serve that purpose. Web
design is a similar process of creation, with the
intention of presenting the content on electronic web
pages, which the end-users can access through the
internet with the help of a web browser. Different
kinds of websites have different purposes depending
on who the intended audience is. Some websites are
geared towards selling products, promoting people
or businesses, and other websites are geared
towards providing practical information and storing
content, while others are merely for entertainment
and connecting people.

A professional design adds a sense of

trustworthiness to a business. Web design uses
many of the same key visual elements as all types of
design, such as layout, colour, graphics, fonts, and
content to enhance a website’s usability as well as its
attractiveness. The web design professionals create
excellent User Interface (UI) Design for a satisfying
web experience. They use critical planning and
analysis for the design and they pay attention to the
user-friendly specifications, converting the intricate
process into a simple and elegant piece of art.

43
VISUAL EFFECTS (VFX)

Visual effects are often integral to a

movie's story and appeal. In
filmmaking, visual effects (commonly
shortened to Visual FX) involve the
integration of live-action footage and
generated imagery to create
environments which look realistic.
These environments would otherwise
be dangerous, expensive, impractical,
or impossible to capture in camera.

Reality Television, Scripted Television,

Feature Films and certain Corporate
Branding pieces, all share a common
requirement for visual polish and on-
screen effects. Digital effects
(abbreviated FX) are usually
associated with the still photography
world in contrast to visual effects
(abbreviated VFX) which are
associated with motion film
production.

Developing and executing dazzling on-

screen visual effects involves the
various processes by which imagery is
created and/or manipulated with or
from photographic assets with the use
of multiple tools and technologies
such as graphic design, modeling,
lighting, texturing, rigging, animating,
compositing, particle effects (snow,
rain, sparkles), digital sets and
backgrounds.
